Jesus Teaches the True Vine at Nightby emmanuel_higgins

John 15:4

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

Abide in me, and I in you means a mutual, constant and living union in which believers remain in Christ by faith and love and obedience, and Christ remains in them by his Spirit and his word as the source of spiritual life and power. As a branch lives and bears fruit only while joined to the vine and drawing life and nourishment from it, so spiritual fruit comes only by remaining in vital union with Christ, for apart from him there is no spiritual life or power and nothing can be done. This abiding is not mere outward contact, profession, church membership, knowledge or good works, but continual, moment-by-moment dependence and communion, not casual or off-and-on touching of Christ. It is kept by receiving, believing, feeding on and obeying his word, by earnest persevering prayer, and by keeping his commandments and continuing in his love, with answered prayer given to those whose words abide in harmony with his will. The Father as husbandman takes away fruitless branches and prunes the fruitful so they bear more, and those so united draw from one stock into unity, love and cooperation with one another and become fruitful workers who reveal Christ's character and win souls.

Setting and Imagery

The command to remain was given as a final lesson on the eve of departure and crucifixion, spoken in the face of terrible ordeal and agony to show how the disciples could stay spiritually alive after visible presence was withdrawn. It was meant to strengthen them for severe trials, conflict and temptation, to prepare them to meet him at his coming, and to gather blessings of comfort, counsel, prayer, hope and encouragement rather than dwelling on sufferings. Learning it would have kept them from denial and betrayal by giving knowledge of his sorrow that the shepherd would be smitten and the sheep scattered and gathered again, and of his thinking of them, praying for them, guiding, upholding and caring for them, calling them in trial to remain in his love, to be of good cheer, and to know they are in his heart and are not alone. All privileges and advantages come through remaining by faith, and remaining produces broad and deep and eternal fruit, with assurance of answered prayer and glory to the Father through abundant results in warning neighbors and saving perishing souls.

It was taught through the familiar everyday figure of the true vine and its branches, an image made so plain by a familiar mirror held up before the hearers that there was no excuse to misunderstand. It was illustrated by pointing to a vine with a withered branch, with Gethsemane pointed to on the night of agony while walking toward the Mount of Olives, so that looking upon a vine would call the lessons to remembrance. Rightly interpreted nature is the mirror of divinity, and pruning is a disciplinary process that brings benefits. Even when separated in a far country, those bound to the great Center remain near one another and one in him, receiving nourishment from the same parent stock.

Christ is the true vine and the reality of which the vine is a symbol, prized as the most noble of plants and a type of all that was powerful, excellent and fruitful, to be prized above all things earthly. He is the Living Vine Stock rooted beyond earth and hell's reach whom crucifixion could not destroy, though wicked men crucified the Lord of glory to shut out divine love and crush hope. Dry sapless branches are grafted into him by the Spirit, humanity joined to divinity vein by vein and fiber by fiber until partakers of his nature are led into all truth and enabled to convince the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. People cannot receive God's life through connection to Israel but through Christ alone, and he is the vine to those who choose to be united, feeding and nourishing their souls. The temple's ornate vine representing Israel as a prosperous vine does not explain the teaching about abiding and bearing fruit. Branches do not bear the same fruit as the root and vine itself.

John 13 through 17 holds lessons of deep importance and richest promises to be studied, memorized, and searched word by word night and morning, even by the weak resting in the great Physician's hands, calling for genuine piety, conversion and living out every verse. The instruction becomes clearer when the mind is reshaped by the Spirit's influence connected with Pentecost, was not fully understood until after the resurrection when understanding was opened of his suffering, rising and preaching repentance, and then was repeated to steady them in disappointment. The chapter gives the conditions for receiving grace for all who claim to be Christians, used in calls to seek assurance of acceptance, pray together, confess wrong treatment of others and seek forgiveness until hearts are softened and his presence is near, while refusing those conditions leaves a person unready to meet him in glory and relying on the world for strength points away from dependence on him.

The vine-and-branch imagery connects with God's vineyard and its work, left unworked when people follow their own way. The Lord presides over, upholds and sustains it when truth is kept pure and those carrying its burdens remain steadfast, needing every kind of laborer who digs, waters, prunes, lifts drooping vines and guides tendrils. Christ is the sure trellis and support around whom workers must be joined, applied to evangelistic work and handling of sacred goods with divine benevolence, while inviting appearance or leaves alone do not satisfy him who wants fruit. Selfishness in dealing with his goods is contagious and destroys fruitfulness, and only divine renovation turning sick consumers into converted producers secures the future against corrupting influence. The call to abide is presented in connection with true and false gods.

Mutual Living Union

The union is mutual, constant and living: to abide is to remain in Christ by faith and love and obedience, while he remains in the believer by his Holy Spirit and by his word as source of spiritual life and power, making them one with him. To live in him as he lives in them is to live because the risen Jesus lives, bringing peace and joy and preparing them to be recognized as his people and to see him in glory. The call itself proves abiding is possible, vital and essential, and it can be lived out even when isolated, because he died to make this union possible, and his present nearness brings wisdom and growth. It is entered by receiving him and continuing to believe, and it is the only hope.

The call is a genuine personal invitation to every soul with no deception, offering rest and close unbroken fellowship to sin-burdened and weary souls. On penitence it brings full and free pardon, on obedience the fulfillment of promises, and participation in the blessings and joy of his love from the propitiation for the world whose love exceeds a parent's love. Making home with him ends friction, ill temper and irritation. Vital union is not established by mere outward contact, closeness, profession, agreement with truth, church membership, baptism, name on the roll, high profession, theoretical knowledge, birth, reputation, wealth, talents, virtues, piety, good works or church standing. These by themselves do not change the heart, save, or give growth or fruit; abiding is by living genuine faith and constant dependence, shown in a life practicing truth and conforming to God's will.

Union begins through self-renunciation, faith, obedience, genuine conversion and being grafted in like a lifeless branch into a living tree. It is maintained through daily, hourly, continual communion, earnest prayer, watchfulness, effort, resistance to sin, denial of self, detaching affections from cherished sins and worldly pleasures, cultivating the soul, honestly examining life by the divine Model, and daily learning because of weakness and ignorance. Abiding is not casual, off-and-on, momentary, merely coming to Christ, a brief renewal followed by walking apart, an occasional encounter, brief bursts of feeling, or a name-only connection. It is remaining continually with unobstructed constant communication, moment-by-moment and minute-by-minute dependence with heart constantly renewed by grace in workshop, field and marketplace, riveted to the eternal Rock.

Union is a living, organic joining, not a mechanical tying or artificial fastening; believers become part of the living vine like branches grown into it and fed by its roots, with fibers almost identical. They become one with him in principle and action, with heart united to his heart, will submerged in his will and mind one with his mind, sharing one life and Head, renewed in his image, with vital forces flowing as from living vine to branch in a life that does not fade or fail. The union is formed by the Holy Spirit binding the whole person to his divine-human nature through faith, Christ taking humanity so people could be one with him as he is one with the Father, share the divine nature and be complete in him. Humanity may grasp divinity and divinity lift humanity to oneness with Christ and God, through God's influence restoring his image, since branches do not sustain the vine but the vine sustains the branches.

Christ guards the bond so genuine union cannot be severed by human power and hardship cannot sever the living believer. Abiding makes the believer safe from Satan's assaults, steadfast to the end when powers from beneath take hold, and gives peace through every storm. God never separates the soul from himself, separation comes only from the human side, and the trusting soul kept by his intercession as Mediator will not perish. Abiding is a deep, thorough oneness many have yet to learn, deeper, stronger and truer than any other union including mother's, lover's, friend's or brother's love. It comes only by entire surrender of the whole heart and affections, placing the will on God's side and entrusting the soul to his keeping in felt dependence; then Christ lives in the person, his grace fills the heart and his will and love govern to reveal his likeness, and no grief touches without touching him, with the pruner's cut touching the living Vine.

To abide is to live inside his love and to stay close, trust his wisdom and follow his counsel rather than persist in one's own way. It is choosing his disposition, identifying interests with his, and being and doing only what he wills as condition of discipleship; it means living by faith in the Son of God to serve and honor him, resting in his love with full surrender, walking in meekness with assurance of acceptance. Christ comes as Comforter inviting confidence as loving Saviour; to abide means to trust him, answer with personal commitment to remain, grasp his promise and believe, depend in prayer and obedience while God works within, work trustfully in his presence and rest in what he can do. So human works are only fruit of Christ working to cooperate with his good pleasure, with right to lay hold of mutual abiding and much fruit.

Abiding calls for daily conversion and trust in his promises rather than a divided life between God, self-pleasing and worldliness which risks eternal loss. It requires whole consecration, renouncing self, seeking God's approval, practicing his teachings with meekness, dying to self to let him abide, and then loving one another as he loved. Remaining is a personal work no one else can do for another, by human choice and act of the will by living faith: receiving Christ, daily laying hold, claiming promises, trusting guidance continually not by changing feelings. It is surrendering soul and body to his keeping unto eternal life, coming just as one is and giving self unreservedly, emptied of self, pride and hereditary tendencies to receive his mold, mind and Spirit.

Abiding means constantly receiving his Spirit, living in unreserved surrender, keeping the channel open, clinging to Jesus and receiving by faith the strength and perfection of his character. As the root sends nourishment to the outermost twig he communicates strength to every believer and the united soul will not wither; it means being vitalized by nourishment flowing through the parent stock, true to God and weighted with truth, with influence a savor of life unto life. All who receive Christ by faith become one with him and part of him, drawing all life from him who is life so that the life they live is the life of the Son of God, one in him not merely in theory, justified and made partakers of the divine nature. This teaching will go to the ends of the earth, and by virtue of this union human beings are justified.

Believers cannot safely be separated even for a moment, and his presence can attend every step only as they meet his conditions, with daily prayer and often turning thoughts to God and persevering when the mind wanders. Abiding means ever retaining his presence with self dead so nothing but God's light and love springs forth, the emptied heart filled with the Spirit bringing growth. Abiding depends on self-denial and sacrifice following his example, receiving the vital principle for fruitful life by living faith and utter dependence, recognizing need for his atoning blood, change of heart and submission of will. Pride, selfishness, vanity, worldliness and cherished sin must be left behind or the life is fickle and unstable.

Abiding is living faith and step-by-step obedience receiving Christ's strength, grace and virtue like a branch from the parent stock in a living daily relationship that removes worry, complaining and self-pity and enables faithful performance of small and great duties without depending on personal merit. Abiding brings the will into harmony with God's will where true happiness is found in oneness with God rather than possessions or ability, with fullness of heart, mind, flesh and will given to do God's will, knowing every pulse is his power and preserving care. Self-effort cannot help, and the believer rests and is one with others. Abiding is habitual communion on which the soul's life depends, living in habitual continual communion which is what being a Christian signifies, keeping spiritual armor on while awaiting his appearing in clouds to take those who received him to mansions prepared. No one can do God's work in self-sufficiency, but must empty self so the Spirit molds mind and thoughts, hide in Jesus and keep close communion every hour as the battle grows stronger.

Those who become God's children dwell in Christ as Christ dwells in God, touched and uplifted by Christ who clothed divinity with humanity, enabling them to serve; being with Christ in God is the privilege of being one with God. Abiding means being crucified with Christ, dead to the world and alive to him, sharing his resurrection life, so that as he is formed within he is glorified. With the human will fully obedient his presence through entire dependence brings unity and wise decisions. To be a living branch is to abide and be one in him, keeping sympathy and harmony with those of like faith, loving what he loves, brought into practical sympathy with his mission to save souls from their sins and not in their sins.

Abiding makes the believer one with Christ as he is one with the Father, so he lives through the believer to bless others, expelling pride and producing sympathy, kindness and shining influence. His grace and love circulate as vine life through stem and cluster, requiring humbling, daily obtaining his mold, self-control and giving up will and ambition until the will is swallowed in his, bringing rest and constant love. Abiding is union in which all wisdom, strength and prosperity come from God alone, by which the chosen are accepted as peculiar people and living examples of holiness, so the world is enlightened, convicted or condemned by its treatment of given light. It is the religion of Jesus and inexhaustible source of the only true power safely exercised, with light and grace flowing into words and deeds.

Union is as essential to life and fruitfulness as the branch's union to the vine; receiving Christ by faith and trusting him makes true believers partakers of the divine nature, producing fruit in witnessing by works, keeping commandments, abiding in love and loving one another. Abiding is vital union as branches truly in the true vine, nourished by sap flowing through the vine, making believers partakers of the divine nature with moral power to overcome and hate sin. Believing means joining as closely as a branch to a living vine, abiding in Jesus and he in them, producing a life following his example, obeying his Word and commandments and sharing his divine nature, while love in words alone does not transform or save. Heartfelt love leads to obedience to all commandments, and mere spoken love cannot save.

Spiritual life is not nourished from within but sustained by living relationship as a branch depends on the vine, with dependence at every moment and him as supply. Looking to Jesus is incompatible with harshness, evil speaking and passionate words, and outward practices cannot replace the Spirit's inward work; branches cut away may upon repentance be grafted back and invigorated with the Eternal's life. Spiritual life comes from abiding as a branch receives life only by remaining in living union, with all believers brought into vital connection as a branch growing out of the parent vine, sustained, nourished and made part of it, one with Christ as he is one with the Father. Abiding means daily receiving from God to impart to others in meekness with kind words, where what is received accumulates only as it is used to bless others and talents increase through use, while carelessness and unused talents lay up material for the account each must render.

Abiding joins living faith and entire dependence on God, calling for the whole person, soul, body and spirit devoted to his will with the Spirit's help and words under divine control. Abiding is experienced inwardly through waiting in faith with prayer, sensing nearness, sweet communion and views of his tenderness that melt the heart; it is closer acquaintance with God and clearer grasp of his goodness, mercy and love learned by experience. Oneness comes by not resisting the Holy Spirit but taking hold of the divine nature; abiding love is an active principle not a passing feeling fading under trial, giving power to character and words, seen in family treatment, with one Spirit shaping hearts in Christ's image when abiding is mutual. Those united by heavenly truth share his life as branches share the vine's life, leading to sincere love and unity; faith joins one to his life and character.

Abiding is a personal relation as close as a branch to the parent stock, precious in times of need, with those believing sharing his life and having large hope. The connection reveals how the Lord regards believers and gives completeness with will submerged in his and his goodness seen in character. Abiding means Christ dwelling in the believer by faith, with holy principles of the Word ruling so sanctified reason decides rightly, maintaining righteousness, purity, holiness, benevolence, love to God and neighbor, control of passions and the robe of his righteousness; retaining defects is incompatible with this abiding. Union is not theory only but sanctification through truth received in love with thoughts brought into obedience and hearts cemented by cleansing blood, producing unity of spirit and tender words rather than requiring others to adopt one's ideas.

Christ must abide continually in soul and heart, for without that inward presence followers cannot reveal him; without inward abiding religious life lacks life and influence, and service lacks life unless love is fervently expressed. Remaining means remaining in Christ and having Christ remain every hour, living in and through him and representing his life, requiring careful particular experience with no one entering heaven without it; only when this hourly living is learned will example and influence be such as God can fully commend. Abiding is the choice to come not as owner of self but as purchased possession, making God the trust, which keeps from being left to Satan's temptations; those who abide belong to God and are not their own to do with as they please. Absolute dependence keeps a person very humble, increases knowledge of him, puts away selfishness and keeps from becoming sport of temptation; dependence must be on him alone rather than own righteousness, for Christ is the only sure foundation and his blood alone atones.

Believers live by faith through union with the living Vine, and as a branch depends on the vine they cannot sustain themselves but Christ bears them. Abiding means trusting his word and relying on him rather than self or others' opinions, drawing sap by faith with him as efficiency and worthiness. Abiding is by living, personal, continual faith and trust: receiving him as personal Saviour, taking him at his word, looking to him as source of strength, relying on him alone and his righteousness rather than self-effort and drawing divine grace, for feeling is nothing and praise or blame changes nothing since the stock bears the branch. The believer lives by faith with Christ abiding within. Living, constant belief in Christ as personal Saviour joins a person closely as branch to vine for a fruitful life; a living branch grows and bears fruit because it continually receives life, and growth and fruit show whether it has life.

Abiding faith is union in which human beings are justified and made partakers of the divine nature, and when Christ sees striving, praying and believing he bestows divine efficiency to make fruitful branches; those who strive, pray and believe become fruitful when they partake of grace without limit. Christ's life-giving power is imparted through the Holy Spirit as sap from the vine, proceeding from the Saviour to sustain spiritual life, renew motives and affections, bring thoughts into obedience, change nature into his image and produce holy deeds. Spiritual life is sustained by the Spirit and maintained through means God provides including nourishment, watching, praying, working and heeding his word. New life is nourished by the Holy Spirit, and as believers remain in fellowship he moves, impresses hearts, leads them and brings growth; spiritual life and growth in fellowship depend on union nourished by the Spirit, and Christ then moves and leads.

Believers abide through living faith with Christ abiding in hearts as they personally receive him by faith, in conscious companionship recognizing his presence and considering what he is and has done in redemption, bringing thoughts under his control and shaping character. Christ must abide in the heart and the believer remain in him, transforming the whole nature with his Spirit and love softening the heart, subduing the soul and raising thoughts toward God and heaven. Mutual indwelling in which Christ's life becomes the believer's life comes through whole-hearted surrender, being clean, and putting self-seeking away for unselfish labor near and far; then Christ strengthens with fullness so the world is encircled with grace, as oil flows through pipes into vessels and workers' lives expound his word with heavenly influence. Abiding is emptying self, taking a low place and receiving the Holy Spirit, securing right conduct, freedom from selfishness and discourtesy, earnest prayer, heaven's light and reflection of future glory to bless others.

Abiding with Christ abiding brings abundant fruit and actively employs faith, hope and love as Christ awakens and strengthens powers; life hidden with Christ in God gives higher exalted views with life hid in God. Life with Christ depends on mutual abiding in that believers live because the risen Jesus lives; union sustains them and brings peace, joy and fullness, with those abiding sharing his joy unto fullness. The verse teaches that Christ is the author of faith, calling for its continual exercise and supplying grace; abiding is man's part in working with God in saving his own soul by receiving Christ and believing, showing faith that works by love and purifies from defilement, of which Christ is author demanding constant exercise with constant supply of grace. Abiding is constant faith continually exercised, receiving a constant supply of grace; it is faith in every circumstance that represents Christ's character, works through love, purifies the soul and receives grace from Christ as its author.

No person is to be another's standard and no one is to lean on any person, but hang upon God alone like a clinging vine entwining tendrils about him, daily gathering strength to be fortified as his instrument to communicate light, so surroundings, scorn and censure do not dim that light needed amid last-day perils; every saved person must look to God. Those united to the living Vine share the Father's love resting in Christ, bringing gratitude and freedom from weakness, pride, vanity, selfishness and character deformity.

Life Nourishment and Fruit

Spiritual fruit comes only by remaining in living, continuing, vital union with Christ, for as a branch lives and bears fruit only while joined to the vine and drawing life, nourishment, strength and fruitfulness from it, so apart from him there is no spiritual life or power and nothing can be done, while he abides in the believer, and professed followers apart from the true vine are fruitless. Through that union Christ supplies grace, nourishment, life, vitality, spirit, strength and sanctifying power, his life is communicated, the repentant sinner's nature is changed to share the divine nature, desires come into harmony with God's will, and the believer draws daily nourishment as the branch draws sap, with life-giving nourishment springing up to everlasting life. Christ's people grow and bear fruit only by remaining joined and receiving the nourishment God provides, and though hostile forces try to uproot God's vine its roots strike deep while God the Husbandman watches, with those receiving provision growing toward full stature in Christ. Believers depend on continual union as a branch is nourished by sap and sustained by Christ's life, and through daily spiritual nourishment this union joins earthly and heavenly life so believers continually receive blessings and share them, while remaining dependent allows his life and Spirit to sustain, enabling growth, stability and Christlike character to God's glory.

The soul depends on communion for spiritual life just as a branch depends on the vine, and deprived of communion the soul withers unless the means God provides to receive life-giving power are used, the Christian life being sustained through Scripture, prayer, watchfulness and work. The fruit is the same kind as the parent vine and parent stock, borne after Christ's order to the glory of God as truth sanctifies, and it is holy Christlike character and righteousness including love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, self-control, holiness, purity, mercy, compassion, kindness, patience, humility, kindly words and deeds, right actions, obedience, forsaking sin, self-denial, unselfishness free of envy, and earnest wise efforts to win and help others in active service. Abiding causes the same fruit to appear on the branch as on the vine, enlisting every faculty in his service, following his example, catching his spirit, building character after the divine similitude and comparing life with his character to reach his perfection who kept his Father's commandments, by looking into the perfect law of liberty with daily increasing faith, and being grafted in means putting away harshness and displaying the goodness, mercy and loving-kindness the Vine bears.

Living branches partake of sap with renewing grace to walk as he walked, with love in deed and truth, departing from iniquity and perfecting holiness, flourishing to God's glory, and the fruit-bearing branch is changed with will conformed to his, becoming advocate and doer of God's law joined with keeping commandments and bringing light, including good actions unto eternal life. Those grafted into the True Vine bear rich clusters of the Spirit's fruit with continually increasing pure sympathy, having crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts, and profession without such a life is no proof of Christianity, only by so abiding can people bear Christlike character. When his grace abides it gives nourishment and forms his mind in the believer, who then bears the same kind as Christ, including peacemaking, and the fruit includes doing the kind of work Christ did for suffering humanity.

Bearing much fruit glorifies the Father, shows the Spirit has worked, testifies to change by grace, true repentance, conversion and complete allegiance, reveals Christ, gives value with God and proves discipleship, and abiding is known by fruit, while a life without fruit shows no living connection, no experience in things of God and no place in the vine. Fruit makes a clear visible difference between those who obey God and those who do not, with every ability and talent to be used in religious life, and those bearing richest fruit show true humility like Christ, the only real proof before the world that believers are branches of the true Vine being the quality of fragrant fruit they bear. Spiritual fruit comes only from drawing sap from Jesus the true Vine, and the fruit reveals whether a person is nourished by Christ or acting from the natural selfish heart, serving as a test of character and fitness for sacred responsibilities.

Fruit for God's glory includes working for salvation, keeping the soul in God's love, being living channels of light with all heaven at command, helping youth with kindness, and practical benevolence and steady service through gratitude, generous support, doing good, encouraging others and welcoming young people away from temptation. Reaching perfection requires living connection as a graft to its parent stock receiving life to bear fruit like the vine, and such fruit requires the same assiduous, tender, watchful cultivation given to prized plants, making a deep, earnest, devoted, self-sacrificing Christian, while making temporal pursuits supreme imperils the soul. Abiding as the branch abides makes a person fruitful, and fruit-bearing represents the character of the vine, raising those who abide to a higher, holier standard to meet his likeness, while a fruitful life depends on remaining connected with heart cultivated and cleansed so fruit appears in proportion to light received.

Life in the branch grafted into the living vine means growth with every provision for divine strength through obedience, producing growth seen in John the Baptist and in Jesus in wisdom and favor, which may be repeated in every child and youth who resists temptation, reverences God and cooperates to restore his moral image. Life and fruitfulness depend on receiving life from God and remaining in harmony with the Creator's will, and apart from that continuing dependence human life cannot fulfill its true purpose, for life and fruit come only from Christ's life-giving power flowing to God's glory, not from human plans, methods, talent or wisdom. Without Christ no fruit can be borne, and strength, grace and virtue must be received from him as from parent stock, spiritual life, strength and fruitfulness depending on mutual abiding as a branch depends on the vine, with no fruit apart from him.

Followers bear the fruit of the true vine only through connection and depend on him, and God helps them as promised, while remaining united distinguishes Christians, is their strength, leads to loving Jesus, praying, keeping commandments, and loving one another. Fruitful lives make the truth of God's word and Christ's character known, while profession without obedience to God's commandments does not show Christ's love to the world. Those joined to Christ rather than serving the world have nature, desires and loves changed into harmony with God with his words remaining, and those united draw life, reveal his life and glory, grow into him, and by beholding are changed into his image to build one another up, not tear down.

Living union makes the branch part of the vine and enables bearing fruit of genuinely converted life, in which Christ is revealed in character, new life works within and God's word is understood, and the glory of life from connection enables students to live by principles and direct others to Jesus. Those who receive him share with others what he has done, new life comes through being joined, and when grace is planted deeply grafted branches bear righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, and when that fruit appears truth has power and grows, applying to all who confess faith regardless of poverty, rank, tribe or nationality as they cooperate in godliness, repentance and faith. All privileges, advantages, help and right quality of fruit come through remaining by faith, and studying and heeding his word, learning his lessons, eating the word daily as food and taking hold of him anew each day with firmer faith sustain fruitfulness, while neglect brings spiritual starvation.

The soul abiding is renewed as blood gives life to the body, vivified and strengthened by receiving and giving, gaining increased capacity to receive larger supply by emptying self in imparting to others. Abiding brings a continuing supply of gifts, so a rich gift today ensures a richer gift tomorrow, with gifts staying fresh and satisfying and each enlarging capacity to appreciate divine blessings, and heaven supplies abundant daily blessing so they can bless others. Abiding means God's love circulates as vitality to bear rich clusters to his glory, requiring cultivating the soul garden by study watered by the Sun of Righteousness unto health, righteousness and unfailing life.

Warning Pruning and Loss

Apart from Christ people can do nothing, cannot overcome sin or resist temptation, and branches that do not abide wither like dead, sapless, fruitless, useless twigs, becoming helpless, hopeless, powerless and open to Satan's control. Bearing bad fruit misrepresents Christ, giving the world a false representation of him, while a life without fruit shows no experience in the things of God and no place in the vine. Present careless indifference is dangerous, and the many withered branches among believers call for decisive reformation. Left to itself a branch has no power to bear fruit, and a person left to self has no power to control a snaring temperament or transform character. The Holy Spirit alone molds and fashions experience after the divine similitude, and abiding means keeping in God's love, humbling under his hand and learning daily Christ's meekness and lowliness, while separation leaves one to Satan's net prepared for the feet and to a chain of circumstances bringing ruin.

Apart from Christ people cannot gain eternal life or remain spiritually safe, but are like members of a body without a head who can be controlled by Satan. The union gives life in the present and continues through eternity, and Christ is the vital source from whom spiritual health, strength and righteousness are imparted and revealed in daily conduct. Apart from him a person is like a withered branch, receiving nourishment only by being in him through fully taking him into the heart and giving self to God without reserve. Christ the True Vine owns soul, body and spirit, loves the soul and knows its value, so believers are to look away from afflictions to him for consolations in his Word, and as faith grasps promises and forgiving love he is woven into character unto hope, joy, peace, gentleness, meekness and love rather than sorrow and discouragement.

Separation leaves believers powerless, inefficient and weak and explains lack of the Holy Spirit, while working in own strength without God's special help, grace and power produces only inefficiency and weakness. Those holding apart are like sapless branches cut off from strength and efficiency, unable to rightly discern the privilege of serving God or the danger of refusing to follow him. Separated from the sustaining connection the branch withers and bears no fruit, and Christ is the believer's dependence and sufficiency, nourished by receiving and daily feeding on God's Word until Christ is formed within. Apart from continuing dependence believers cannot produce fruit themselves, and professed followers apart bear no good fruit and may instead produce harmful influence. Apart from wholly trusting and abiding, evil can prevail over good and inconsistencies of character appear, even in those striving for mastery.

Without vital union trial over practice or income causes offense, stumbling and falling, love grows cold, and the fruitless will be cut away and bound with unbelievers. Separating from Jesus is linked to selfishness, covetousness, pride, strife, contention, hard-heartedness, licentiousness and other evil practices, with little power and efficiency in the church. Without Christ as abiding presence selfish traits grow stronger and may be mistaken for virtues, and when self is cherished Christ is not abiding there. The Father as husbandman and vinedresser skillfully and mercifully takes away fruitless branches and prunes fruitful branches so they bear more fruit, with cleansing through obedience to Christ's word. Believers should pray for grace to endure this purging, and those who stand true in trial are clean through his word, while fruitless branches are eventually cut off.

God as Husbandman works day by day in those laboring with Christ to conform them to Christ's image and make them partakers of the divine nature so they grow and bear abundant fruit as trustworthy missionaries whose lives show the gospel's results. The believer's part is to yield to God's forming rather than try to direct the work. Remaining means coming into right relation to God and to Christ, maintaining sacredness of character revealed in love for souls, working for souls to God's glory, and reading his words over and over until the heart burns with love for every branch. Those not in right relation are pruned away and perish, while what hinders God takes away and what works in harmony he prunes so it brings more fruit. The teaching distinguishes true branches with living connection from spurious branches and impresses the necessity of remaining.

The need for pruning is a call to become more fruitful, and avoiding responsibility and living only for self fails to bear fruit and risks separation and eternal life. Mere profession without vital union is exposed by trial, and fruitless branches that stumble and grow cold are cut away to be burned. Those neglecting the close relation are wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked while claiming richness, and will be rejected as lukewarm and spued out unless they obtain tried gold, white raiment and eyesalve, leaving professed richness to be cut away and burned unless remedied. Professed but fruitless branches lacking vital union are revealed under persecution by apostasy showing lack of true attachment, and are cut away and joined with unbelievers, while humble hearts are made fruitful and non-abiding branches are cut off.

Cherished known sin long violated hardens conscience and cuts off union, producing selfishness, covetousness, pride, strife, licentiousness and evil practices even among preachers of the sacred word, requiring thorough reformation or leaving the ministry rather than bringing disaster through unregenerate thoughts. People of high position, great intellect or extensive knowledge who become proud and self-sufficient and feel competent to devise and execute without counsel from God separate themselves and become dry and fruitless as withered branches. Only by remaining connected do followers bear good fruit, while those carrying weaknesses and defective ways bear harmful fruit like a bramble bush. Those in responsible positions must let God's converting power shape lives until ways and wills become God's and self dies, so character and influence reflect Christ.

Mere profession without serving and cooperating is fruitless like a vine producing wild berries instead of rich clusters. Those departing from faith become like a fountain sending sweet then bitter water and a vine bearing grapes then wild grapes, and continuing to bear good fruit requires truth as it is in Jesus planted by the Spirit and daily tended by grace until the near end when truth alone will triumph. Without abiding there is only dim reflection with infirmity, unmortified sin, carelessness of spirit, unsanctified temper, heedlessness in temptation, following own way, boastful self-confidence, refusal to see self as Christ sees, growing dim light, unfaithfulness and denial. Abiding means keeping connection by fasting and prayer to gain victory over darkness and stay where the devil cannot rob needed grace, bearing fruit to God's glory.

Though God's people are rising never to fall again branches can still be cut off if not careful and others raised instead, with this right relation especially needed in the very last stage of earth's history. Those not drawing nourishment become withered and fruitless like branches without sap. Those described lacked the love of Jesus abiding and so lacked the Christlike dependence and spirit needed for responsibilities, and apart from receiving life people fail to serve faithfully and can lead others away.

Word Prayer and Obedience

To abide is to abide in his Word, bringing heart and character into conformity with his commands and law, for receiving and believing the Word is receiving Christ himself, while neglecting it means death and backsliding brings grave consequences. Feeding on and obeying his words joins believers to him as branches to the vine, sustaining them by his life and forming fruit after the parent stock in patience, meekness, humility and love, doing the works he did. That union causes the same fruit to appear on branch as on vine, enlisting every faculty in his service, following his example, catching his spirit and building character after the divine similitude by looking into the perfect law of liberty, living the law as he kept his Father's commandments with faith daily exercised and increased, the will conformed to his and the branch becoming advocate and doer of God's law. This fruitful life is joined with keeping God's commandments and bringing light to those around.

Receiving his words brings the union and continuing to obey them sustains it, for without remaining in living union there is no spiritual life, power or eternal life, as a branch cannot live or bear apart from the vine. This abiding is eating his flesh and drinking his blood, the bread of life being God's Word, for his words are spirit and life. The union is formed by receiving his words into the heart and obeying them, bringing life and making partakers of the divine nature, shown in kind words, unselfish actions, tenderness, compassion and care. Those who remain receive grace and pass it on, and sharing brings further increase, while without imparting its supply is not continued; divine fullness flows through to others so the work endures, and giving out keeps capacity to receive alive.

Abiding happens by feeding on the Bread of life and daily receiving, believing and acting the Word, individually eating Bible truths and eating the flesh and drinking the blood as pictured in John 6, whose words received by faith bring life and a changed life. So eaten they become part of the being through implanting of a new nature, strengthening and renewing after Christ's perfect humanity, energizing as the soul's life-blood, forming Christ within as guide and sympathy, causing joy and pledge of glory in a continuing not casual union. To draw nourishment from the Living Vine is the same as eating his flesh and drinking his blood and receiving truth as God's bread by feeding on the Living Bread. Those who so feed manifest his spirit and become doers of the Word through sound solid teaching, not feeling or seeking strange startling sensations, living a sound steady life that discerns Satan's delusions and devices and will not be carried away when he performs miracles to testify he is Christ.

Dwelling in Christ is receiving truth as God's bread and feeding day by day on Christ as the Living Bread for spiritual sustenance as temporal food gives physical strength. Receiving and daily feeding on God's Word nourishes the union as Christ is formed within and the believer grows in him, for separated from that sustaining connection the branch withers and bears no fruit, and Christ is dependence and sufficiency. This mutual dwelling of believers in Christ and Christ in them is by faith, with his words to be received with wholehearted strong faith not weak and hesitating, and the heart needing Christ present as heavenly Guest abiding in the soul. Abiding means having his words abide by reading and rereading, believing and practicing every requirement and lesson given his disciples and presenting the same clear lines to others so they can understand. Those who abide bear the Spirit's fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, live up to the law so no condemnation comes, and receive the promise to ask what they will and it shall be done, while high profession proves nothing and missing fruit proves no abiding.

Abiding is eating his flesh and drinking his blood, living in him by faith in an unseen Redeemer filling the heart with love, the heart drawn out to him with peace and heavenly joy in appreciation of the heavenly gift. Loving Jesus supremely, nothing is too costly to give and no self-denial too severe to endure, and those who have this love enter the joys of their Lord as will every heart in the redeemed family. It comes by looking to his throne arched with the rainbow of promise, the righteousness of Christ, offering penitence, praise and thanksgiving, which perfects character, makes believers represent Christ and gives peace beyond understanding. This requires constantly meditating on Christ and his loveliness, directing minds to Jesus and fastening them upon him, dwelling in every discourse upon the divine attributes.

Abiding means being branches daily drawing nourishment and bearing rich clusters, gained through most earnest prayer for self and lived by refusing idleness, engaging in living missionary work, laboring in love and being doers of his word, which bearing of much fruit glorifies the Father and marks true disciples. When united with him divine fullness flows through to bless others and the work continues and endures, needing fresh supplies each day to keep giving, with daily conversion bearing rich clusters of love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, kindness, meekness, faith, temperance and godliness, and bearing the right kind under temptation to God's glory. Those abiding are one with him in all plans and labors so the life record will not shame them before the great white throne when judged and rewarded according to deeds done in the body, while unfruitful branches are cut off and pruning is joined with the church's growth in fruitfulness.

Abiding is shown by diligent study of God's Word, private prayer and drawing strength from Christ, appearing in words, influence and actions, while fruitlessness comes from neglecting available help and letting other things occupy the mind. It means maintaining communion with him and remaining under his guidance, which is the way to live out God's Word and bear fruit, since spiritual fruit cannot be produced by own power. It is maintained by feeding on Christ through studying his Word and doing what he commanded, which is living by faith upon the Son of God as a branch remains part of the vine receiving nourishment from the parent stalk. This communion appears in life and character shaped by his Word, receiving it by hearing and searching, letting it enter the life and doing it, for the believer's life depends on continual communion as the branch depends on the vine with spirit united to his.

His Word is to abide in believers, making them healthy fruitful branches of the living vine, for fruitfulness depends on abiding as a branch depends on the vine. His words and principles nourish the soul so that when he abides the life meets his requirements, giving motive power and shaping character, with new life from his life. Strength and nourishment are drawn by faith as one is, not by looking to self for worthiness, and living near the Saviour is revealed in communion; his presence fills the heart emptied of self, removing sin and filling with the Spirit to bring growth and make the church living, active and working.

Abiding shapes prayer, for with his words abiding petitions arise from pure holy desires in harmony with his will rather than selfish motives and always receive an answer, with no conditions except those he has made. Keeping his words brings answered prayer, and those who abide bear much fruit, glorify the Father and prove discipleship, while claiming promises without abiding and meeting conditions insults him; God fulfills his part when people are true and faithful in abiding to form characters fit for the royal family. Daily eating the Word as daily food brings Christ's life into spiritual circulation so Christ is formed within as hope of glory, while neglect to read and study brings spiritual starvation, and those not abiding are cast forth as withered branches to be gathered and burned.

Abiding means earnest persevering constant prayer that takes hold of his strength, not only alone or on the knees but by often lifting the soul to God amid labor, producing steadfastness in truth, right and justice with high holy purposes, for without abiding nothing spiritually fruitful can be done and good purposes alone cannot withstand temptation. It calls for seeking the Lord's counsel and spending much time in prayer, doing individual work faithfully and helping others in responsible position, as a child of God remaining connected as branch to vine. It means keeping connection by constant earnest prayer for help and power every day and hour, giving daily wisdom to move in God's will and sustaining grace making effort pleasant and easy with trust to care, bless and strengthen, putting study of Scripture first to teach truth to others.

Abiding presents the devotional setting for asking help, honoring him by trusting blessing is received, with God's power and wisdom available when asked for. It is lived by faith that prays earnestly for the baptism of the Holy Spirit now, not neglected for a more favorable opportunity, cutting away hindrances so the Spirit flows in rich currents bringing all other blessings. Without this, members remain in heavy slumber and miss the falling of the Spirit it is their privilege to receive.

Abiding means keeping his commandments and continuing in his love as he kept his Father's commandments, which gives full joy and is evidence of love to God and the Bible test for those who have received light. It means living by the instructions and requirements of God's Word, bringing life into right relation to Christ and letting his character shape life, shown in words and actions testifying to the world and awakening interest, for apart from him nothing can be done. It means keeping the world and its affections out of heart and mind, for keeping them while professing faith is mere profession bearing no fruit and strengthening defects, disagreeableness, vanity and self, while those who abide learn his lessons and become meek and lowly. It means learning and living by his word, recognizing its claims and promises and depending on him, with obedience and love for one another and quiet attention to his voice, receiving his words and living by them unto purity and holiness rather than self-sufficiency, pride, envy or striving for position.

Continuing in his love through faithful obedience joins weak helpless humanity to Christ's strength, combining trust and dependence with doing God's will, by which the sinner receives Christ's life and bears fruit as a branch only by remaining connected. Obedience alone is not enough, for believers must also trust and remain united as branch to vine; those who obey need faith that keeps them abiding, and through this dependence comes peace and joy showing sanctification through obedience to truth. In spiritual life obedience to God's laws is the condition of bearing fruit to his glory, and teachers who lead to disregard them prevent fruits of love, humility and self-sacrificing service, while close union enables obeying all requirements and bearing lives magnifying the Saviour who justifies by his righteousness, seen in unselfish love.

Believers must remain connected with Christ's life in them as branches in the vine, as his life is joined to the Father's, expressed by obedience to God's commandments including keeping the seventh-day Sabbath, living in harmony with him and his Word to guide family life unto a kind spirit devoted to helping others and saving souls. True faith unites to Christ as branch to living vine as basis of peace passing understanding, and true faith means obeying his commandments and following his example. Abiding means continual faith and listening to his instruction so as to do his will, where he makes believers at home with him in favor and peace where friction, ill temper and irritation cease. It means receiving his words, practicing principles, seeking his will and acting and speaking as he would, with his presence within, for those not following his example in words and conduct are not abiding, nor he in them; merely listening, accepting only what pleases and refusing correction is not abiding.

Abiding means trusting his promises, keeping the soul in God's love and faith and continually beholding Jesus, through whom the heart is changed into his likeness, bearing the Spirit's fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and self-control. This gives increasing strength to resist impatience, selfishness and other temptations, while trusting self leads to failure and fruit cannot be produced by own strength. It means laying the whole burden on Jesus and claiming by faith a whole salvation because he died a whole sacrifice, claiming promises and blessings through the Son. So abiding bears much fruit wherein the Father is glorified and discipleship shown, keeps his joy remaining so joy is full, frees commandment-keeping from bondage and is lived out in loving one another as he loved.

Abiding means trusting continually, not only when feeling confident or at peace, depending on Christ for grace, righteousness, peace and love unto a life showing his goodness, relying on God's promises as his sure word. It comes by receiving truth as God's bread and feeding day by day on the Living Bread with wholehearted strong faith not weak and hesitating, needing Christ present as heavenly Guest. It is wholeness of dependence for ability and power to do good and to cling to Jesus, who gives sharpness of intellect to discern and steadiness of nerve to execute. In humble constant communion the Spirit works with the worker, praying when faint-hearted, closing lips to men, telling trouble to Jesus, asking humility, wisdom, courage and increase of faith so as to see light in his light, rejoice in his love and by believing see salvation.

Abiding forbids self-confidence and going forward in one's own spirit, calling for walking carefully with watchfulness and prayer, dismissing anxieties, coming to Jesus and committing the soul to him as faithful Creator with childlike trust as a child trusts parents, bringing burdens to receive rest, for apart from him his yoke cannot be worn and his burden lifted. Victory over evil and consistency depend on trusting wholly in Christ and abiding through faith working by love and purifying the soul, without which evil prevails and inconsistencies appear. It is maintained by constant watchfulness, prayer, communion, activity, walking with God and keeping company with Jesus, contemplating his character, goodness, love and saving work until thoughts and character are shaped and reflect his likeness. It requires constantly meditating on Christ and his loveliness with minds fastened on him, dwelling on divine attributes in every discourse, expressed in daily conduct glorifying God in impartial kindness rather than self-pleasing, separating from the Christless world for service.

Abiding is habitual communion with God on which the soul's life depends, making wants known in secret prayer and keeping the heart open to receive fresh blessings, with secret prayer sustaining the inner life. The heart that loves God desires to commune, leans on him in holy confidence, and where this love exists it will not be repressed but expresses itself in gratitude, words, deeds of active benevolence and public devotion. It means being joined by living working faith calling for whole person, soul, body and spirit devoted to his will, with the Spirit's help and words under divine control. In continual dependence it means keeping watch, praying, surrendering and relying for wisdom and strength so as to hear and obey the Holy Spirit, for only by abiding can spiritual fruit be borne.

Remaining joined requires constant prayerful watchfulness so every word and action correctly represents the holy faith, speaking and acting as others should, with light shining in words, spirit and conduct, this mutual indwelling being the condition for teaching and leading others. Ability to speak and act as he would comes from that connection, putting on his gentleness, keeping self out of sight and letting the Spirit control zeal lest it become impatience or retaliation, for without dependence hasty irritating words undermine witness and give advantage to opponents. Abiding means doing his will and exercising simple faith in his word, giving the science of salvation, the experimental knowledge of God and his will, greater power than knowledge of science and more desirable than intellectual training or Solomon's wisdom. This science is within reach of all, even the unlearned, revealing to the humble trusting soul that all true knowledge leads heavenward.

The command shows the Word of God is to guide and teach, and those not led by the Word suffer loss and can harm and imperil others. Salvation rests not on human works but on God's mercy and love, with Christ's blood alone atoning and his righteousness received by living faith, and relying on him alone dispels self-sufficiency, pride and vanity, as branches continually depend on the vine to bear fruit. Abiding requires genuine conversion, whole consecration and surrender, willing obedience and doing God's will, giving body, soul and spirit to God, taking Christ fully into the heart without reserve, renouncing self, seeking God's approval rather than own pleasure and practicing his teachings with meekness. Those who receive him and become God's children share his nature, with grace transforming self-indulgent lives into service and continually renewed as wholly devoted, while without true conversion and vital godliness religious theory alone cannot produce Christlike character or completeness in him.

Abiding means working with God in soul-saving by receiving Christ as personal Saviour and believing as man's part, showing at all times a faith that works by love and purifies from defilement, of which Christ is author demanding constant exercise with constant supply of grace received. Christ is personal Saviour and sufficiency, so the believer must depend on him and receive his promises. Saving faith entrusts soul and body to God with assurance Christ will keep what is committed, washing in his blood and clothing in his righteousness for eternal life, precious in his sight. No one can keep self and be filled with God's fullness; self-will, pride, self-sufficiency, own way, mold of nature, temperament and hereditary tendencies must be renounced to receive Christ's mind conformed to God's will, and the emptied nature he supplies by his Spirit unto vessels prepared for use with eternity in view.

Abiding is sanctification through truth received in love, not theory only, with thoughts brought into obedience and hearts cemented by cleansing blood unto unity of spirit, Christ's mind and kind tender words, while envy, jealousy, coldness, mistrust, selfishness and controversy prove mere theory denying him. As believers sincerely seek to do God's will and glorify him his sanctifying presence attends, bringing fragrance of his character into work and orderly life blessing others. It finds the Word a pleasant profitable guide so trouble, perplexity and even poverty do not discourage, putting study of Scripture first to teach truth, with whole unreserved consecration laying all at his feet. Continuing to bear good fruit requires truth as it is in Jesus planted by the Spirit and daily tended by grace, holding fast until the near end when truth alone will triumph, lest departure make the vine bear wild grapes and the fountain send bitter water.

Opening the heart so Jesus abides brings enlightenment by the Spirit so strange new lessons are quickly learned and more real good done in one day than in a week before, for abiding is true religion depending entirely on Christ's righteousness not works of merit. The verse calls educators and students to pray for the Holy Spirit to abide, to open closed hearts and earnestly seek his presence, setting aside ordinary study when he is at work to listen and seek God. The beginning of confidence must be held firmly to the end through lifelong persevering effort in the good fight where struggle is lifelong but victory certain, receiving grace for grace and multiplying graces unto integrity, purity and holiness shining not by self-kindled sparks but by the Sun of Righteousness. His words must be received with wholehearted strong faith and the heart needs Christ present as heavenly Guest.

Abiding involves receiving Christ as spiritual nourishment, and those who partake of the heavenly bread have eternal life, while separation leaves powerlessness, inefficiency and lack of the Spirit. It means receiving nourishment as the branch receives from the vine, and a preacher must so abide or he cannot help the sinner; having him abide means living connection through surrender bringing sanctification, while cherishing sin bars it and causes loss. Abiding means trusting Christ and accepting his guidance, removing worry, complaint and self-pity and enabling faithful performance of small and great duties, not by personal merit but by humbly hiding life in him and following his example in living daily relationship, without which there is failure. It is done by claiming rich promises by faith unto faithfulness and thoroughness in all efforts.

Abiding means living close to God with Christ dwelling in the soul, separated from selfishness, asking help for health of body and mind and feeding the mind daily with truth and righteousness, as living growing faith working by love and purifying, full of trust, peace, joy and gladness, so words are always wise and helpful. Ongoing communion in which Christ is formed within as hope of glory brings life, hope, restfulness, peace and joy in his love to a heart responding to the gospel, with believer in Christ and Christ in believer. Communion is the soul's life as real daily union bringing full joy, shown in spirit, words and actions, while profession alone is empty unless good fruit appears, including unity and fellowship with one another and with Christ.

Apart from daily union believers cannot live a fruitful spiritual life, and this union of Christ dwelling in them and they in him is tied to receiving his life through his words, which are spirit and life, as a branch remains connected to its parent stock. Seeing light in God's light and receiving strength and nourishment depend on abiding as a branch depends on the living vine. Coming feebly and receiving baptism with no apparent change is not enough, for abiding means advancing daily in perfection of character, and those who do find rest that comes only through perfect obedience. Believers cannot produce the life and character God requires by own efforts or religious theory alone, but must abide and depend on grace and divinity, enabling becoming partakers of the divine nature, overcoming and developing character needed for eternal life and completeness in him, with grace nourishing and forming his mind unto peacemaking and the same kind of fruit.

Abiding involves receiving the Spirit's influence so his love is revealed in life, quieting speech that would chafe and irritate, with the soul still in reverence and attentive to the Spirit's voice, as part of preparing for mansions he is preparing, a blessed mystery essential to fruitful life. Mutual abiding is shown by bringing his tenderness into daily life, reproducing his character, showing disinterested benevolence, cultivating love for souls by practice, having hearts softened by humble wrestling prayer, overcoming every temptation and yielding body, soul, time and capabilities in undivided service as those bought with a price. Faith joins one to his life and character; abiding means believing in Christ and relying wholly on his saving grace, not merely believing facts about him, separating from the world unto the Spirit's graces and transformed life.

Unity of Believers

Connection to the same vine brings believers, workers and distinct institutions into unity, love, fellowship, cooperation and harmony under the Holy Spirit while each keeps distinct character, identity, individuality and work. Branches do not blend into one another, unity does not require uniformity, and no one absorbs or controls another, for all draw life and nourishment directly from Christ to bear fruit that glorifies God. Keeping Christ rather than others' faults as the focus gives strength against the enemy, and His grace filling the heart moves people to share suffering and joy with tenderness toward those in need.

The church is united with Christ and through Him with the Father, pictured by vine and branches, with believers as branches belonging to one stock who though distinct are bound together and can bear fruit only through that connection. Such unity cannot be secured or kept by any human methods but comes only by staying joined, so all who stay united to the parent stock will be one while each keeps individuality, drawing nourishment from the same source in fellowship and love. The Holy Spirit brings them into one mind and judgment to represent Christ, calling them to encourage and serve alongside one another as workers together with God without preventing others from serving, and a Christian living in love and unity proves to the world that God sent His Son.

Abiding sustains unity among believers and workers with different gifts, callings, temperaments, dispositions and offices, like branches of one true Vine drawing common nourishment from Christ not from one another to bear fruit in harmony. They work together under one Head rather than acting as complete in themselves, with dependence on Christ breaking down selfish barriers and leaving no grounds for rivalry or boasting. Where dissension, envy, jealousy, strife, coldness, mistrust, selfishness and harsh, censorious conduct appear, that life is absent and abiding is not taking place.

Those united to Christ are also united with one another in sympathy, tenderness and love, with diverse branches on one parent stock and diverse gifts drawing from the same source and serving in harmony without separating over differences in judgment. This union calls members of Christ's family to care continually for one another and help those tempted or straying return to a pure holy life, working humbly in harmony by helping, strengthening and praying for one another and not being drawn away by reports and discouragement. Each keeps a distinct role and is not blended into another or molded by one person's judgment, but all are supported by and related through the one parent stock.

God purposely gave different temperaments and variety of work rather than casting all in one mold, so different members retain distinct qualities and expression without becoming alike while sharing one life, receiving nourishment from the same source, working together, maintaining individual relation to God and cultivating esteem for one another in harmony in fruit-bearing. The branches of the True Vine live in perfect, superhuman, mysterious unity in diversity, and the Word of God is like them in that unity, containing divine wisdom that is the foundation of all true education. Those consecrated to God remain individually responsible yet are united in diversity, and the church's varied work and talents belong within one living whole by God's wisdom giving variety.

Union with Christ also joins believers to one another, and though many and diverse sharing fruit of the one true vine, their unity and Christlike lives testify to the gospel's power, reveal His character and help convince unbelievers. Being branches of the True Vine is incompatible with variance, dissension and strife, requiring disciples to seek unity in Him and remain united like branches to the true vine. Where variance prevails they prove they are not branches of that vine, and where dissension, envy, jealousy and strife are borne, abiding is absent. Unity in Christ comes from each person being joined to Him like a branch to the vine and cannot be produced or sustained by human methods, and those so united become one in Him.

Believers as branches of the same vine are to draw together and love one another as brethren, for unity with one another follows from being united to Christ. Being united to the living vine binds them to one another as members of one family and one body, and their love and respect flow from God's love and are sustained by the Holy Spirit as sincere, impartial and enduring, not a passing impulse. His life and Spirit sustains and causes every member to flourish because He lives in them, joining member to member as firmly and harmoniously as hands, head and feet in the natural body, so closely united and mutually dependent that one cannot live and act independently of the others. When His Word abides in the believing soul under His molding influence it brings unity and oneness with Christ, living communion and abiding love, which is sure evidence of privileges.

No branch can draw life from another branch, so believers and workers cannot draw spiritual life from one another but must draw directly from Christ, which keeps them from pride and enables much fruit in pleasing God. Their union with one another comes through shared union with Christ while each retains individual identity, and that daily, hourly communion naturally leads into lasting union with one another. Remaining in Christ means remaining with the organized body of God's commandment-keeping people in unity with God and each other, and drawing apart to weigh and judge the church by human standards proves God is not leading. Christian Sabbath keepers must also be united with one another, for without this joined connection hardship and trials will arise.

Baptism signifies that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are pledged to keep believers as long as they remain one with Christ as branches depend on the vine for lasting fruit. The verse pictures the union of the church with Christ and with the Father by a vine and its branches, renewed to the disciples before the ascension. When He abides in each heart His Spirit in one person recognizes that same Spirit in another, enabling unity, so that even when separated in a far country believers remain near one another and one in Christ receiving nourishment from the same parent stock. Christ abiding in the heart makes it possible to work together, with unity and cooperation depending on His presence within.

Workers who do not become one in Christ will not make up God's family in heaven, so mistrust, envy, jealousy, evil suspicion and love of supremacy as satanic things must be put away. When Christ abides selfishness, rivalry and strife for supremacy give way to oneness, self-sanctification, humility with self out of sight, and love seen and felt, and where this abiding exists the showers of grace come and God can bless the work with sheaves, whereas discounting others to show superiority proves the work lacks the right signature and God cannot bless it. Unity among workers and Christlike compassion toward the young flow from this connection with Christ. Abiding is necessary for a holy experience of humbling the heart and obeying His Word, and it cements heart to heart so believers do not pull apart.

Jews and Gentiles receive life and bear good fruit only by being joined to the true vine, those cut off through impenitence being offered engrafting again through repentance and belief, bringing peace with God, sanctified conscience, transformation of disposition, words and works, partaking of the divine nature and unity with one another. Living unity is kept by individual work and whole rather than half conversion, putting a person in connection with Jesus as Redeemer through faith to walk and work with Him while He stays to help at every step, with praise instead of complaining coming from the lips, necessary to unite with Him in heavenly courts. True believers united as branches to the living vine gain true discernment to understand His words, which is lacking without that union.

Mission Service and Character

The verse states God's will plainly outlined for those who minister in word and doctrine, showing the philosophy of genuine missionary work to be done by those acquainted with present truth, and ministers need conversion to understand it, for God means just what He says and it is the privilege and duty of ministers to believe every verse in John 13-17 and to live them out before fellow ministers. Human effort alone cannot accomplish the work He appoints, for the disciples' ministry had to be built on Christ and empowered by divine agency, with God working in the human worker while the worker remains responsible to act and to seek the power God provides.

Bearing fruit requires having Christ abiding in the heart by living faith in a living connection, bringing right relation with God so that divine power joined with human effort accomplishes the work given to do in the world, tempers character, and makes a person work as Christ worked with strong faith, complete consecration, and love for souls that qualifies for working together with God. Trying to do work for the Master, bear the message for salvation, or bring converting power upon hearts without Christ abiding within is impossible and ends in disappointment and failure, while abiding means taking Christ along in all labor and living by faith in Him. Success comes only by dependence as Christ in His human nature was dependent on His Father, for the branch cannot bear apart from the vine, and abiding means walking humbly without self-sufficiency and self-exaltation, giving all glory to God, uniting with divine agencies, and laying hold of power out of and above self with Jesus beside to grasp the outstretched hand. It is renewed day by day by taking hold anew with firmer faith, and as His lessons are studied they grow more impressive and give increased power to receive instruction, while the soul is vivified by receiving from Christ and giving to others, gaining increased capacity to receive larger supply by emptying self in imparting. Abiding is necessary for a fruitful Christian life, trials test whether people will live as Christ did, those who stand true are clean through His word, those who are not Christians cannot bear fruit, and all who enter heaven must work together with Christ. Being united with the True Vine enables bearing fruit to God's glory and makes a worker a laborer together with God as passive material in the Master's hands with power to succeed added daily, while trials and disappointment test and reveal lack of wisdom and experience, and supposed failure becomes advancement to better self-knowledge, firmer trust, greater strength and carefulness benefiting others, so mistakes are learned from and not repeated when the Lord is sought with humility and trust.

Fruit-bearing does not come by doing some great thing to work the works of God, but by simple, continual abiding. Christ knows the difficulties trying every soul, the pressure of temporal cares and weariness leaving little time or thought for eternal realities and raising how to find time to study and practice the word, and His answer is to abide. The first and highest duty is to know that one is abiding, He must do the work while believers seek to know what the Lord says and yield lives to His guidance, and when the spirit of an abiding Christ is possessed everything takes a changed aspect with rest and peace needed coming from the Saviour alone. Every invitation to seek the Lord is a call not merely to come once but to remain, for without that union no fruit can be borne, and those having this abiding rest no longer follow own way and will but want to do God's will, with daily worries no longer making them coarse and rough and uncourteous as they remain united as branches in the vine.

Disciples can bear spiritual fruit only by abiding as a branch depends on the vine, for apart from Christ they can do nothing, and remaining sustains faithful work and keeps believers from losing principles of faith amid duties. Success and usefulness depend entirely on Christ, requiring faith placed directly in Him and abiding in Him, because like a branch separated from the vine they cannot bear fruit apart from Him. No one can do God's work successfully by personal power, but those surrendering body, mind and spirit to the Lord's control will see His salvation, and those abiding can be made effective and carry truth to others.

Usefulness and deeds acceptable to God depend on remaining united, for apart from Him a person can do nothing He accepts, and this abiding union brings communion with God and peace in Christ, without which hope is delusive and the non-abiding person is cast away like a branch and burned. People cannot bear spiritual fruit or accomplish God's work by own strength but must remain in Christ who alone supplies strength needed for labor, and they must remain united and work as He did because efforts cannot prosper apart from Him. Abiding is a positive necessity for success in going forth to seek and save the lost, and trusting self instead causes failure and little accomplished, for effective service requires having the mind of Christ and teaching truth as it is in Jesus.

Men presenting truth can bear no fruit and do nothing unless they abide and Christ abides in them. Abiding means keeping contrite and humble, subduing self, walking humbly before God, and laboring in Christ's spirit with less working in self and more working in and by and through Jesus, including cherishing faith, confidence, sympathy, unity, tender regard, respect and love for fellow laborers, and God reveals Himself to those so abiding. When workers open Scriptures disregarding these principles Christ cannot give victories He would gladly bestow, and withholds blessing insuring success because success would injure them into glorifying self instead of God, so means expended fail to accomplish what was hoped and prayed, bringing disappointment and loss of faith.

Spiritual life and fruitfulness come from abiding, and ministers must first receive life and truth from heaven before imparting to others, for learning about His abiding means receiving life-giving supply. This life brings continual growth toward His full stature, not stagnation, and learning or effort alone cannot supply what has not been received, while abiding brings close walk with the Lord.

Elders and ministers must draw spiritual nourishment as branches draw from the vine, for without this abiding connection they are dry and Christless, lacking spiritual knowledge and heavenly wisdom, and even words good in themselves are powerless when the heart has not been transformed by grace. Abiding is shown by life transformed through beholding Him and by goodness, righteousness, truth and spiritual fruit appearing in words and actions, and when joined by believing, faith is shown in love and purified life. This experimental knowledge gives more intelligent idea of living faith, better acquaintance with God, and greater comprehension of His character, goodness, mercy and love, showing ministers how little of Christ's righteousness they have brought into discourses and enabling them to go forth with new courage and hope to present Jesus and His love. Conference workers are urged to abide as they serve and cooperate faithfully, and ministers and physicians need Christ abiding in them, for without this they cannot do fruitful work, while harmful work and words reveal unconverted hearts needing thorough conversion.

Workers can serve effectively only by abiding with Christ abiding in them, looking away from self, for an abiding Christ makes room for the Holy Spirit's power and brings spiritual results. A life of fruitful service comes from vital connection as a branch depends on the vine, and one loving God bears fruit through steady service doing good whenever opportunity comes and encouraging others by godly life and conversation. Abiding makes believers living channels of light to a dark perishing world rather than leaving it to perish, putting all heaven at command with power from on high working with the laborer to win souls, because Jesus does not lay the great responsibility of saving the lost without giving divine aid, and lack of spirituality and light comes from lacking the spirit of labor belonging to abiding.

Abiding is required of those connected with sanitariums and schools whose great work must be done quickly because time is short, meaning learning to remain by being wholly converted and fully consecrated instead of living for self and worldly purposes. Those abiding give body, soul and spirit to God to be used in saving souls, because bought with the life-blood of His only-begotten Son they belong to God and are not at liberty to do as they please, and as they abide selfishness is removed leaving no room for it, with fullest satisfaction found in His service. Believers flourish only by remaining as a branch depends on the vine, meaning seeking God's approval, glorifying God rather than insisting on own will or pleasure, and letting truth live within and purify the heart, which prepares to receive the latter rain. Fruitful service is possible only through living connection with the Great Healer, enabling sanitariums to become places where healing reaches sin-sick souls.

Fruitful service depends on continuing in Christ as a branch cannot bear apart from the vine, and Christ's presence is the invisible agency on which success depends, for without Him the worker can do nothing. The life wholly given is one of daily surrender in which self is hidden and Christ is seen as the worker, and through the Holy Spirit people cooperate with Christ and accomplish good, with His abiding presence enabling work to bear fruit.

Spiritual and moral power comes from abiding as a branch depends on the vine, and grace within springs up to everlasting life and flows out as living water. Doing God's work depends on Christ abiding in the believer and the believer in Christ, for as a branch cannot bear apart from the vine a person cannot do this work apart from Christ. Abiding enables believers through the Holy Spirit's work in hearts and characters to become lights and cooperate in winning souls from darkness to light, and centering affections in Jesus and trusting God personally brings strength for faithful service and makes a person a help and support to others. Those receiving Him and becoming God's children share His nature, and through conversion and the Spirit divine grace transforms self-indulgent lives into service, with ability to bear salvation's message and make grace and truth known coming from this relationship, continually renewed as wholly devoted to God. Being true in that union makes a person a colaborer whose talents are improved and increased, whose influence weighted with truth surrounds the soul with atmosphere as savor of life unto life to associates, for which account must be given.

Abiding puts all heaven at command with power from on high working with the laborer to win souls, and lack of spirituality and light in the church comes from lacking the spirit of labor belonging to abiding.

Fruitful influence depends on remaining close, for as believers abide His presence enables influencing others and helping convert sinners, and this power does not come from human effort alone but Christ works in them and heavenly beings cooperate to impress truth, with meekness, humility and distrust of self accompanying firm hold on Him. Believers must remain firmly rooted to bear much fruit for His glory, and here that fruit is linked to working for salvation of souls. Bearing fruit includes keeping the soul in God's love and working to win unbelievers, and being occupied with self and household can leave this neglected. Every member must have root by firm unreserved consecration rather than depending on ministers hovering over territory or seeking safe easy place, preparing for service and enabling bearing fruit meaning striving as one man for saving souls.

Abiding enables servants to do the work He would do, with firmness in principle and meek lowly heart expressed through dependence. Reformers can do Christ's work only by abiding, then acting as He would with self subdued and His character rather than own spirit made visible, connecting dependence with firm principled reform in meekness and lowliness.

Workers in the Lord's institutions must be firmly united with Christ, with spirit in harmony with the Holy Spirit's witness.

All workers are distinct branches of the true Vine and can bear fruit to God's glory only by drawing all sustenance from Him as one parent stock. Abiding means daily emptying the heart of self and supposed wisdom with hereditary and cultivated tendencies to wrong, depending wholly on Christ, and preparing the soul temple for the Holy Spirit, so self does not rule and Christ appears. Those so abiding work together with God in perfect unity and love as co-laborers, producing best quality fruit, wearing His yoke and learning meekness and lowliness to find rest and peace.

Every branch truly in Christ draws nourishment and brings rich clusters by being an active living worker revealing Jesus in character, answering His mind and will, for no one can bear spiritual fruit or do anything spiritually without remaining, and a church member not an active worker revealing Christ is not of the Vine. This dependence calls for active response, for those valuing His sacrifice give lives in service so others are blessed, helped and strengthened to grow. If fruitlessness continues the branch withers and is taken away, while bearing much fruit proves discipleship and glorifies the Father, and all entering heaven must work together with Christ.

Anyone can be a branch by abiding, and when abiding Christ abides in that person, shaping conduct so those abiding must represent Him in words and daily work. Those abiding do His works, living differently from sinners and sharing belief with neighbors and others needing truth, while avoiding responsibility and living only for self fails to bear fruit and risks separation and eternal life, and need for pruning is call to become more fruitful.

Abiding comes through the word obeyed with His words remaining, producing broad deep eternal fruit as part of last lessons before crucifixion, meaning cooperating with God in working out salvation by warning neighbors and saving perishing souls so none charge failure in judgment and the saved credit faithful words. Human effort apart accomplishes nothing, but those abiding and keeping His words receive assurance of answered prayer and by abundant results glorify the Father.

Abiding is known by working Christ's works in the same line, having compassion as He would, and in every way seeking to save perishing souls. It means personal work for neighbors, opening Scriptures, and laboring together with Christ for salvation in cities and wherever work can be done in the last remnant of time, while Christ works through followers giving Holy Spirit power to impress minds. It requires right relation to work in harmony with the true vine, studying the Bible and teaching children to study instead of drifting into enemy lines, cooperating with God and praising Him for life and privilege of working God's works.

Bearing fruit depends on living connection, and in soul-saving Christ is the living Saviour through whom fruit is borne by claiming promises and using advantages given leading to salvation represented. This is shown by winning souls as laborers together with God and working out true principles of godliness as representation instead of shutting up to self, requiring doubled effort to keep right relation and know one is a fruit-bearing branch.

Christ and His people abide in one another, seen in institutions when workers reflect God's character rather than merely own and words and actions carry heavenly influence of love and peace, imparting fragrant influence to those met. Effective work depends on abiding and having Jesus abide within, expressed in life sanctified by truth, transformed toward God and heaven, and made a living blessing, with indwelling Saviour shining through to help turn sinners from error into disciples. Abiding causes doing His works, seeing need to multiply souls, and revealing light love and joy, keeping religion from Sabbath confinement and moving to labor with compassion, open the Word to those knowing not truth, help free souls from Satan so they lead others to beauty in Jesus, and invent every possible means to bring light to those ready to perish. This is personal work no one else can do for another, enabling laboring with God to practice forbearance and love, while communion and daily receiving light and blessing enable imparting help and serving as mouthpieces, expressing God's love through encouragement and sympathy amid cooperating angels.

Those believing and remaining united become living channels of light and blessing serving needy and suffering as laborers with God, with union bringing Spirit's fruits revealing mercy, forgiveness and truth, and those doing His works are accepted in Him. Abiding makes a person a channel through which God communicates gracious Spirit to others.

Abiding means receiving His mind and doing His work, for a true branch bears fruit for God's glory by faithfully laboring to save souls, and missionary service is genuine fruit of union, with life without such fruit not truly pious or a true branch. As believers work with Christ to save others they overcome selfishness and grow in love, spiritual strength and Christian character.

Vital union cures religious idleness and doubt about being a Christian and makes idle believers laborers together with God. That union sends thousands who might enter the harvest into thousands of places at home and abroad where truth never raised or heard, to do work close by and far off instead of waiting to be carried to the vineyard or having it brought without inconvenience, because harvest is ripe ready for the sickle whichever way they look. Those so abiding become partakers of divine nature receiving moral power to overcome and hate sin, lift eyes seeing harvest white close by and afar, and cannot be silent while souls perish for light, with only such faithful workers hearing Good and faithful servant. True abiding is as branches really in the True Vine nourished by sap flowing through, not religiously idle doubting and waiting.

Living connection is expressed in concern and active work for people perishing in sin, and those feeling no burden or travail for salvation are not living branches, for believers are to live truth and use abilities to bring others to Christ with the Spirit working through them.

Christ's abiding presence makes fruitful workers, and those remaining cannot be indifferent to people perishing but bear fruit glorifying the Father.

Abiding decides what influence becomes, for what is at heart is revealed in thoughts, words and actions, and influence becomes savor of life unto life when abiding and savor of death unto death when not. Daily connection gives living abiding interest in saving souls, shown in directing others by choice counsel into right safe paths, for which face-to-face meeting will come in judgment, and talents improved in union surround the soul with atmosphere as savor of life for which account must be given.

Fruitfulness depends on abiding and is linked with Christ's promise to enter and share fellowship with those hearing and opening the door.

Abiding causes bearing much fruit, and this fruit is growth in grace proved by increasing ability to work for God. One abiding learns in Christ's school how to pray and speak for the Master, and realizing lack of wisdom and experience places self under the Great Teacher to obtain perfection in service. Daily diligence brings daily growth in comprehending spiritual things, so at close of every day of labor one is better fitted to help others, and abiding as branch in vine means daily learning with close examination in light of eternity, receiving to impart, so a teacher represents before pupils what is desired for them. Those teaching children and youth must so abide growing unto Christ's stature, and if abiding will have power to discern spiritual truth, for spiritual things are spiritually discerned.

A person cannot bear spiritual fruit by personal power but must remain connected to the true Vine, who supplies nourishment, life, vitality, spirit and power making fruit possible. This is shown by Christlike character including patience, forbearance and hope especially through affliction and disappointment, with grace sustaining and comforting in trials, while faithful abiding proves chosen and separation leaves unable to bear fruit. Laying hold upon His strength brings peace and deliverance from enemy temptations, for to abide is to take firm hold of His hand and place feet on vantage ground upheld by strong right hand, with His efficiency becoming strength, and no fruit can be borne except by abiding. Christ abiding brings preservative qualities influencing others for good and saving from corruption and death. The sinner must maintain constant vital union receiving divine life expressed in words, spirit and actions, for occasional conduct is not enough, depending on humble reliance, earnest prayer and living faith, not self-sufficiency or talents. This abiding is sustained through prayer and faithfulness when tempted, making fruitful life possible including saving others, and converting power is needed daily to avoid sin and live as faithful influence.

Christian growth and fruitfulness depend on constant union as a branch cannot bear apart from the vine, and this union is essential to growth and preparation for coming. Genuine sanctification and Christian life depend on remaining joined, for believers cannot produce spiritual fruit apart from Christ. People bear fruit only by abiding, abiding is necessary for fruitful service to others, and without it promise of eternal life cannot be fulfilled, requiring believing and living by it rather than carelessness or self-serving. Believers must remain in close continuing relation, for abiding is possible and essential, and apart nothing can be produced, while abiding with Christ in them bears heavenly fruit of lives sanctified by the Spirit, marked by prayer and truth, careful conduct before God and world, and daily strength to do God's work, showing power of truth in character. Christ's life-giving sanctifying power enables fruit, apart they can do nothing, and true conversion means taking God at word and following teachings, necessary for living religion, faithful conduct and bearing fruit, lived out by studying Word with family and treating children as Christ does.

There is no safety in dependence on self, for union is mutual with disciples abiding by faith love obedience and He abiding by Holy Spirit as source of spiritual life, and only as abiding can fruit be borne. People bear Christ's works only by abiding as a branch bears only while joined, and claiming belief while working selfishly for temporal advantage and following own inclinations works apart from His life and deceives self, for followers should glorify God daily. Claiming faith while living selfishly and failing to do His works is incompatible and does not glorify God. Abiding means walking humbly without self-sufficiency and self-exaltation, giving all glory to God, uniting with divine agencies and laying hold of power out of and above self, renewed daily by taking hold anew with firmer faith, with lessons growing more impressive and soul vivified by receiving and giving. It means bringing motives, work and character into harmony, receiving Spirit's guidance, following His way, putting self aside and making Christ visible. People bear good fruit only by abiding receiving character from indwelling Saviour, and words, spirit and actions show whether abiding or self-reliant, with self-reliance revealing disagreeable disposition.

Those united represent His character, for a believer cannot produce fruit independently but must remain joined to the living vine. Abiding with Christ in them enables bearing fruit to God's glory and revealing Christ to the world, and every truly connected branch draws nourishment bringing rich clusters by active living work revealing Jesus, while one not active revealing Christ is not of the Vine. Union brings rich not limited harvest of Spirit's graces making followers Christlike and reflecting light, and this source influences others toward higher life. Christ must dwell in them to represent Him in speech, character and dealings, and then they will not be fruitless.

Those claiming belief should understand this teaching and show it in daily life. People bear good fruit only by abiding receiving character from indwelling Saviour, and words, spirit and actions show whether abiding or self-reliant.

Believers cannot produce fruit by themselves but bear only by abiding as a branch depends on the vine, and steadfastly beholding changes into His image enabling bringing glory to Him. Without abiding no one can bear fruit of Christian character or reflect glory, but beholding more steadfastly, learning of Him and drawing near to repose in love changes the believer to be exact in principle, upright, tender, charitable, meek and lowly, walking and working as Jesus worked, and Christ longs to help every soul so abide.

Believers abide by living personal faith while Christ dwells in hearts through faith, and this continuing companionship and sense of presence shapes thoughts and character as contemplating His character, goodness, love and saving work, reflecting likeness in daily life and to those around. Continual devotion keeps closely connected, making like Him in mind and character with clearer broader understanding and better judgment. Those abiding show His character including meekness, compassion, love and gentleness, and as self dies submitting to training His patience, forbearance, meekness and lowliness are formed while hindering hereditary and cultivated traits are removed, giving power and rest. Abiding is shown by transformed life through beholding and by goodness, righteousness, truth and fruit in words and actions, and offering penitence, praise and thanksgiving grows toward character, representation and peace beyond understanding.

Christians must remain joined to be transformed into likeness and live as subjects, for outward profession, self-denial or good deeds cannot substitute, and when temptation comes non-abiding reveal unlike spirit misrepresenting Saviour.

Becoming like Christ and bearing transformed character come through close communion as a branch depends on the vine. John's meekness and lowliness were not natural or independent of grace, but united he shared divine nature, and Christ's love transformed and sanctified him, with loving devotion result not cause, making a true disciple a new creature and living representative in disposition and character, which is true sanctification. Communion is necessary, as a branch bears only while joined, and John became meek and lowly sharing divine nature through close union.

Communion is source of transformed life as a branch depends on the vine, shown in John's close attachment, for Christ's love changed character and love for Christ bore fruit in devoted service and love for others, making partaker of divine nature and bringing true sanctification.

Living in communion is the way to grow strong in His strength, become more like Him, and be a help and blessing to others. Spiritual life comes from abiding as a branch receives life, and centering affections on Jesus and trusting God enables doing good, helping and supporting others, bringing joy and reward.

Centering affections in Jesus and trusting God personally brings strength for faithful service and makes a help and support to others. Believers must remain joined as branches to a vine, for Christ is the true Branch, and staying means looking to Him and relying for strength, with reports and discouragement not drawing away, but working humbly in harmony helping, strengthening and praying for one another.

Christ is the true vine and believers branches who cannot have spiritual life apart, and this union sustains when visible presence withdrawn and gives power to overcome evil, bearing righteousness blessing others and glorifying God. Usefulness depends on remaining, apart nothing accepted, bringing communion and peace, without which hope delusive and non-abiding cast away and burned. Continual life is necessary, meaning daily experience harmonizing with teachings through which continually advancing in knowledge, virtue and character. Abiding is first and highest duty, meaning He must do work while yielding life to guidance, not merely coming but remaining, giving rest and peace only Saviour gives and changing aspect of everything, no longer following own way but God's will, with worries no longer making coarse rough uncourteous as united as branches. Victory over sin depends on living continuing union with Christ abiding in believer and believer in Christ. Believers must abide to bear fruit, with His goodness, mercy, compassion and love appearing in lives, giving completeness with wills submerged in His will.

Connection is necessary for overcoming sin and temptation, purifies heart, and leads to circumspect life and faultless character. A person lives and bears fruit only by abiding, for dependence is way to overcome and only hope. Christians cannot produce fruit by themselves but must remain as source of strength, with daily dependence necessary to resist sin and draw others. Christ must live in heart and believer remain, necessary to overcome and live under influence of righteousness, without which no good fruit.

Resisting temptation depends on abiding, for without living connection people cannot bear fruit of Christian life. Christ must dwell in heart and control life, maintained by constant watchfulness and prayer, expressed in daily conduct glorifying God rather than pleasing self, including kindness to all without partiality or hypocrisy.

A Christian resists sinful desires and remains pure only by staying united, trusting continually and receiving divine grace, maintained through watchfulness and prayer, with faith and works both needed to press forward against current of sin.

Abiding is necessary to remain faithful and avoid deception when Satan uses miracles to mislead in last days.

Remaining united makes fruitful sharing Christ's life as a branch receives nourishment, making possible for every person even weakest to share divine nature and overcome as Christ overcame. Believers must remain and Christ dwell in hearts, for only through this union can they have Christ's mind and live and work as He did, enabling continual Christlike effort with angels alongside.

Continual devotion keeps closely connected, making like Him in mind and character with clearer broader understanding and better judgment. Life and fruit depend on Christ abiding in heart, bringing purity and freedom from sin with character revealed, and close constant communion prepares for heavenly fellowship. Union brings faith, hope and love into active use as Christ awakens and strengthens powers, and seeing light in God's light and receiving strength and nourishment depend on abiding as a branch depends on living vine. As self dies submitting to training His patience, forbearance, meekness and lowliness are formed with hindering traits removed, giving power and rest. Abiding gives courage, strength and faith for work, with life nourished flowing out in love and labor for souls.

Abiding brings happiness and joy in God like a branch drawing life, and as remaining connected His grace transforms words and actions with lives showing gentleness and reverence for spiritual things.

Spiritual fruit and Christlike love depend on continual communion, for those abiding and letting Him abide will naturally willingly obey command to love one another as He loved, keeping love pure refined elevated while presence removes coldness and hardness. Life and blessing come through abiding, for those abiding receive blessing and share it, without which cannot bear fruit of Christlike life.

Abiding and having Christ abide takes place when meeting moral darkness as Christ did and revealing Him to all around, not only when speaking but Christ with believer all the time to help on every point and press back moral darkness.

When abiding works are fruit of Christ working in them, and Christ works in them to do good pleasure, and dependence does not leave passive but energies awakened to cooperate. Growth in grace and higher inward experience come through abiding, meaning accepting conditions and learning from Him, so strength enables bearing heavy burdens with gladness, with fruit as changed life strengthening rather than hindering others.

Believers must remain continually united like a branch joined to parent stalk, for occasional contact is not enough, and as a branch cannot bear by itself people cannot do Christ's work acceptably or give glory unless abiding. Living in the true Vine means humble consecrated daily life walking in Spirit manifesting Christ wherever going, not overcoming without help but Jesus helping at every step, with merits and virtue in atonement blood taken hold of for strength and grace daily through watching unto prayer and keeping Jesus nigh. Those abiding bear much fruit, with power to bring souls and bear unto righteousness with sanctified tongue and ears, and by beholding become like Him revealing Him in life, dealings and home, showing love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness and goodness instead of fretting, foolish talking, unkind remarks, jealousy and evil surmising. Those belonging have crucified flesh with affections and lusts, profession without such life gives no reason to believe Christian, and wrong feelings must be overcome.

Abiding in the True Vine is necessary to bear righteousness, and those remaining show faith through doing good, seeking to save others, overcoming difficulties, and keeping unspotted from world. Bearing fruit depends on living connection, for those abiding receive light and show connection through works, words, spirit and obedience to commandments. Workers must remain joined to bear fruit, and as more fruitful look beyond temporary troubles and earthly concerns to unseen eternal.

Christ's words do not abide in those whose selfishness, love of money, pride and contempt for poor shape actions. A life joined bears fruit in service to others especially needy and distressed rather than self-exaltation, revealing whether trusted with eternal riches.

Followers are branches bearing only by abiding, and without living connection a professor becomes poor dwarfed plant bearing only leaves, cold unsympathizing shut up to me and mine, seeking to please world by conformity instead of disinterested love for souls. Fruit is unselfish sympathy, tender respectful love in looks voice acts, helpful influence in family and toward all, and usefulness as co-worker turning souls to Him. Selfishness builds wall shutting soul from light and love making fruit impossible, each accountable for talent to be useful, and in mercy God prunes fruitless plant He loves lopping branches so roots strike deeper and backslidden heart drawn to Himself. Dying to self and letting sunshine of Christ's love melt icy unapproachable spirit breaks wall and restores fruitfulness in well-doing. His life-nourishment flows to nourish branches so not barren, fruit is disinterested benevolence, sympathy and love living for good of others instead of self, while selfish spirit and love of world narrows dwarfs mind leaving professed branches wanting, so abiding requires entire transformation and thorough conversion, closer connection imbuing with Spirit leading to sympathy for others' woes as life-work given all.

Living in union is incompatible with unkindness or neglect, and abiding is shown in tender consideration, sympathy and small acts of love, with life joined seeking good and happiness of others. Believers are to seek union deeper stronger truer than any other through cooperation after example of life He lived, making possible revealing divine likeness, knowing science of spiritual life, and glorifying God in body and spirit. The heart filled with grace and will controlled moves by His love to suffer with sufferers, rejoice with rejoicers, feel tenderness for every soul in weakness sorrow distress, and reach helping hand to needy.

Kindness, compassion, pity and God's love are fruit borne by one grafted into living Vine. Every ability, power, reasoning faculty, talent and capability is to be used in religious life, and those bearing richest fruit show true humility and lowliness like Christ.

Good fruit comes from abiding, and conduct marked by selfishness, harshness and bitterness is not fruit of abiding branches but like bitter fruit from wild olive. Abiding shapes conduct so harmful words casting shadow are left unspoken, and those contending for truth must remain because ability to speak and act as He would comes from connection. Abiding means putting on gentleness, keeping self out of sight, and allowing Spirit to control zeal so not impatience or retaliation, for without dependence hasty irritating words undermine witness and hand advantage to opponents.

Abiding is shown in pure words and unselfish conduct marked by Christlike meekness, sympathy, love and compassion. It calls for careful speech with no improper word, representing as branch of living vine, kept in mind morning noon night and in labor.

Christ's life sustains followers like sap flowing into branches, and Spirit dwelling is shown by responding meekly to injuries and insults with gentle words and kindness, as fruit of abiding. Christ abiding produces circumspect reliable conduct and pure words refreshing others, for without continually receiving strength and grace through faith people are vulnerable. Christ must remain present in heart to bring forth good fruit, for as a branch cannot bear apart a person cannot produce good from Christ without abiding, and without Christ within speech becomes careless exaggerated harmful. Fruit is seen in lives reflecting attributes, not easily offended, under provocation patient and kind representing Christ without hurting others through harsh critical words. When Christ abides presence produces purity, modesty, careful reliable conduct and refreshing words, requiring continually looking to Jesus, trusting and drawing grace by faith.

Abiding shapes conduct so harmful shadowing words are left unspoken, gentleness put on, self kept out of sight, and zeal controlled by Spirit lest impatience give advantage to opponents.

Abiding means cultivating personal piety so words and works become channels conveying truth and lights to world, for non-abiding cannot be lights but become weakness, seen when dictatorial accusing judging with unsanctified heart and unholy temper seeking to mend wrongs, driving souls from God. It does not allow what God condemns or let sin strengthen, but exercises faithful watchcare manifesting love by going to erring, praying, drawing to Jesus, pressing heart bound to heart, then mighty power seen and many brought to truth. This presence gives discernment to know how to correct, when wrongdoers must be rebuked sharply on spot and when dealt leniently, and how to govern passionate children without passion, while unless abiding all out of line.

Abiding is known by fruit of Christian life, namely holiness of heart, life wholly devoted, love for those He died for, self-denial, faithfulness in ordinary duties, and love thankfulness praise. When heart renewed by Spirit and consecration maintained Christ dwells within and believer grows toward maturity. This is shown in loving one another as He loved, and failure to love shows disobedience pointing to failure in other duties.

Abiding shapes whole experience enabling true love, for love for God brings self-control and self-denial, while self-indulgence and sensuality are contrary. It means keeping in God's love by cultivating sympathy, courtesy, tenderness and love for one another. The soul purified and refined by grace abiding is not selfish, venerates all from God, is tender kind simple earnest inspired with Spirit, willing to suffer or rejoice for His sake, reaching men where they are with heart full of love for God and man, its words eloquent in simplicity. One remaining is tender kind simple yet earnest inspired by Spirit willing either to suffer or rejoice, and abiding means living in precious love of Jesus, without which not abiding, revealed through love kindness respect care.

Love is a tender plant of heavenly growth that must be carefully cherished, watered and cultured with kindly words and good acts, or it will grow cold wither die and bear no fruit. Abiding means living in precious love, revealed through Christlike love kindness respect care.

Abiding means walking in light and knowledge of truth given, and those doing so are fruitful branches whose light shines in spirit words actions bearing rich clusters. Those knowing requirements claiming love yet cherishing sin and hardening conscience by habitual sin are not branches and bear no fruit. God does not hear prayers for blessing nor minister to sin, so prayers in church family or secret are only form rising no higher than heads, receiving no strength because asking amiss. Those striving with all power to overcome and confessing are forgiven and cleansed for Christ's sake, and truth in soul works by faith to purify elevate refine ennoble.

Union as Living Vine is necessary to bear fruit to God's glory, without which none borne, and abiding means loving purity and holiness, distinguishing common from sacred, having clean hands pure heart, and putting all powers to work to live in given light. When remaining in impurity and unholy association Christ does not abide, Spirit cannot abide in heart, not in harmony with God and cannot enter heaven.

A person bears good fruit only by abiding with Christ abiding in that person, and inward connection is incompatible with impure conduct, for heavenly truth sanctifies refines ennobles receivers, while contradicting actions need conversion before work accepted. Conduct marked by undue familiarity shows pure principles not rooted, for truth brings close connection not impurity. Those truly abiding are changed, not led toward impure actions or undue familiarity, and one whose conduct contradicts shows truth not inwardly formed needing thorough conversion before God accepts work.

Truly abiding keeps from fulfilling lusts of flesh, and those gratifying fleshly lusts during probation are not abiding with offerings polluted unacceptable.

Abiding keeps mind from impure thought and act by training to dwell on Christ and heavenly things, strengthening in purity and holiness for immortality. It gives nourishment, imbues with Spirit, makes boughs flourish without withering or fruitlessness, and supplies ample strength grace purity righteousness for perfecting holiness, so even lowest corrupt vile putting away sins turning from iniquity seeking God with full purpose have stained garments taken away receiving pure robe of righteousness to live not die, walking as He walked overcoming as He overcame exalted to His right hand.

Abiding calls for determined purpose to abide by studying Jesus as great pattern instead of growing into ever-changing fashions, so as not to grow apart, promising much fruit in abiding while apart impossible.

Abiding calls for seeking to understand His will to do His will, bringing light to discern hindrances preventing abiding and leading to careful regard for privileges given. The verse is precious promise advantage encouragement given just before leaving and facing great affliction, gathering comforts blessings rather than dwelling on sufferings as last lessons to bring to mind and keep in view in trial without losing sight.

Thoughts need disciplining and directing toward what draws into close walk with God, for untrained they attach to whatever within reach, but rightly directed lead to right words and actions, while fruitfulness depends on remaining connected as vine and branches show.

People must remain vitally connected to receive strength to resist self-love, self-indulgence and temptation, without which natural tendencies lead toward moral death.

Learning to abide leaves no room for selfishness, meaning wholly converted no longer living for self or worldly purposes but giving body soul spirit to God to be used in saving souls, because bought with life-blood of only-begotten Son belonging to God not free to do as pleased, finding fullest satisfaction in service. It means seeking God's approval, glorifying God rather than own will pleasure, letting truth live within purify heart, preparing for latter rain. Those abiding give body soul mind spirit, no longer withholding from full consecration.

Followers depend on Him as source of strength, and as abiding His spirit and power revealed in lives, enabling following example though not possessing same consciousness of power He had.

Christ and believer must remain joined with Christ abiding in believer and believer in Christ, connecting to source of wisdom and power. This brings continued growth in divine life and strength, and receiving heavenly truth fully leads to sanctification helping endure trials without forgetting source.

One drawing life has no desire for world's frivolous unsatisfying pleasures, becoming new noble creature and unfailing light showing way to heaven and God. Abiding requires separation from friendship and spirit of world because light and darkness cannot unite, and those abiding are chosen accepted as peculiar people separate living examples of holiness, so world enlightened convicted or condemned by treatment of given light. When church seeks world's favor friendship connection weakens, strength faith zeal diminish, dead formality replaces spiritual life, branches may spread widely yet bear little fruit. Those remaining show faith doing good seeking to save overcoming keeping unspotted, and close relation through communion activity prayer separates from Christless world enabling service.

Seeking world's favor weakens connection into dead formality with wide-spreading but fruitless branches. Light and darkness cannot unite, requiring separation, with wisdom strength prosperity from God alone.

Abiding is incompatible with conforming character to world regardless of profession, while those abiding reflect character daily recognizing value of love and redeeming sacrifice. A life joined should not be marked by worldly speech conduct, and those professing love dishonor Him when talking acting like worldlings, needing daily conversion honoring Christ in every word. Salvation and success depend on remaining not self-reliance, for bringing natural inclinations and self acts from stirred feelings assuming unauthorized authority. It is incompatible with suspicion envy rivalry contention, for self-sufficiency combativeness selfishness wilfulness separate soul, not from Christ whose love draws together.

Those abiding are never alone because having Saviour on side. To abide means being on His side, working with Christ to best ability, laboring unitedly heartily for victory at every step, overcoming enemy temptations, and receiving Spirit and revealed presence while working for heaven. This works beauty of character fitting to be welcomed through gates, right to tree of life, seeing King in beauty, gaining eternal life with no more death sin temptation devil, realized shortly when earthly history closed.

Abiding means putting away self-importance taking no credit, thinking talking of Christ praising magnifying lifting Him up as crucified. It brings Spirit's power to overcome every sin least to greatest, causes Christ revealed in character, and makes channels communicating light and workers together with God.

An abiding Christ is shown by being controlled by His Spirit, and such unselfish conduct is necessary to be regarded trustworthy and for Lord to work with them. Abiding means being controlled by Spirit evident in unselfish labor connected with trustworthiness and Lord working with you. Like a branch cannot bear apart workers cannot produce Christlike character and work apart, and as self-seeking gives way to unselfish love labor lives display God's character witnessing to sacred truths.

As abiding selfishness gives way to consecrated service and satisfaction in serving Him. Believers bear only by abiding receiving nourishment, with words actions showing sharing His life bearing like parent stock, Spirit great need, and setting aside selfish ambition enables overcoming temptation serving as workers with God.
