Jesus Standing Among a Ring of Joined HandsBible World

John 17:21

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Christ prayed that all who would ever believe in Him be one in the Father and the Son after the pattern of the Father in Him and Him in the Father.
That oneness is complete oneness of spirit, mind, judgment, purpose, faith and character in thought, word and action, yet without merging persons or erasing individuality and distinct work.
It comes only through sanctification by living obedience to the truth of Scripture under the Holy Spirit, with self surrendered and Christ dwelling within, and as believers draw nearer to Christ they are drawn nearer to one another.
It is given so that the world may believe and know that the Father sent Jesus as Redeemer, for the harmony, love and transformed lives of believers are the convincing credentials of His mission.
That unity is strength that all the powers of hell cannot break, while Satan constantly works to make the prayer of no effect by stirring variance, pride, envy and dissension, which believers must put away by earnest prayer, humility and love.

Setting and Occasion

The prayer belongs to the closing hours in the upper chamber after Judas withdrew, offered just before Gethsemane, betrayal, trial, crucifixion and ascension, ending the instruction of John 13-16 given to comfort and prepare the disciples. It was prayed to the Father just before the crucifixion, and as He went forth to meet the last battle with Satan He poured out the burden of His soul with His eyes lifted to heaven. It was spoken just before trial as He was about to leave them, full of comfort and love to assure them they would not be left as helpless orphans. With divine authority He thereby gives His elect church into the Father's arms, gathering His flock as a faithful shepherd under the shadow of the Almighty in a strong and sure refuge.

The prayer illustrates the intercession He is making and will continue to make to the end of the world for those who believe, as their High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary. Its concern is spiritual blessing, that followers be kept from sin and remain loyal to God, not that they gain riches or human status, and its answer is assured for those who faithfully do duty. With wounded hands He intercedes for the redeemed, joining humanity to God, identifying His interests with fallen humanity and seeking the Father's help for them. He continually works for their unity, and seeking unity in faith and practice is both privilege and duty to be in harmony with heaven.

The verse means exactly what it says and every verse in John 13-17 is to be believed and lived out, studied word by word, prayed over, received into the treasure-house of the soul and made the daily lesson and rule of life. Its lessons are to be studied and practiced to shape habits and guide life, calling for living faith and balanced development rather than one-sided growth, bringing habits into harmony with the prayer. It is to be received and acted upon to keep believers from getting above the simplicity of pure Christlikeness, presenting unity as standard for those who enter the heavenly city. It reveals covenant privilege and lays solemn individual responsibility on every member of the visible church as a worker in the vineyard to do his utmost to preserve harmony, union and love after the pattern of Father in Son and Son in Father. Grounded in Father and Son being one and made possible as Christ dwells within, it is unity of sanctified character and harmonious service, not merely agreement in belief, an essential part of experience and an eternal principle to study and put into practice.

In taking humanity He came to be one with humanity and at the same time to reveal the Father to sinful beings, He who had been in the presence of the Father from the beginning as the express image of the invisible God being alone able to reveal Deity. Made in all things like His brethren, becoming flesh even as we are, hungry and thirsty and weary, sustained by food and refreshed by sleep, sharing the lot of men yet remaining the blameless Son of God, a stranger and sojourner in the world but not of it, tempted as men and women are tempted yet living free from sin, tender, compassionate, sympathetic, ever considerate, He represented God's character in constant service for God and man. He came from the Father to cross the gulf sin made between God and man, to place people within mercy and open the way to reach the tree of life and restored communion, bringing human nature into personal relation with His divinity as the center for faith and meeting place where God and humanity unite and commune. This oneness is redemption's work: He obeyed the commandments and took humanity into Himself so fallen people may share His divine-human life, with the Holy Spirit binding body, soul and spirit to Him like vine and branches so human nature is united with and shaped by His nature unto partaking of the divine nature. It is mutual belonging, for people cannot be happy without God and His love cannot be satisfied without them.

Union and love was the burden of His heart, prayed with the agony of the cross before Him out of care not for Himself but for those He would leave to carry His work, because though severe trials awaited them their greatest danger would be a spirit of bitterness and division. He foresaw the trials and dangers of His people to the close of time, and is not unmindful of dissensions and divisions that distract and weaken the church, looking upon them with deeper interest and more tender compassion than moves an earthly parent toward a wayward child. He bids them learn of Him, trust Him, open hearts to receive His love, with His pledge to be their helper. This unity of feeling, thought and action was needed to carry forward their calling as the world's teachers, needed by those widely different in natural characteristics, training and habits of life as seen in the first disciples, which He sought to secure by bringing them into unity with Himself. Division, prejudice and resistance to the Spirit oppose this unity and grieve Him who died for them.

The prayer shows the value He places on those purchased by His sacrifice and received by faith, giving courage, increase of faith and trust in God. Through His prayer on earth and His intercession in heaven He brings all true followers into close living union and relationship to Himself, so those who receive Him as personal Saviour are formed into sacred union with Him and are one with Him as He is one with God. It opens ever more extensive views of privilege, with heights and depths of experience for all who hide the life with Christ in God, calling them to become in every sense laborers together with God and to reach perfect oneness through the perfection in Christ. His influence still reaches people through His Word though He is not physically present, enabling them to bear testimony, yet that oneness is not automatic and must be secured by watching unto prayer and constant guard lest it be failed of. Unless divine power works with human effort ministry fails, for the work must be built on a divine Christ.

Believers Included in Prayer

The prayer was offered not for the first disciples alone but for all who would believe on Christ through their word, their works, their labor, their daily Christian character and their lifting up the cross, in every generation to the close of time. That they all may be one together as the Father is in Christ and Christ is in the Father, made one in the Father and the Son, is Christ's specified recompense for His conquests and His glory in His ransomed church. Their inward living union in peace, love and unity, answered as God's people cooperate with Him and grow through Christian fellowship into Christlike character, is the credential of His mission to lead the world to believe that the Father sent Him to save sinners.

Working out salvation in the home places parents and children among those embraced by the prayer. Unity must be seen in families, churches and schools as evidence to the world, and selfishness, bigotry and the pursuit of personal honor work against that witness. Obedience at home shapes influence in the church and lets light shine before others, for church members are measured by what they are in the home. That oneness means united consecrated effort for one great work, tender respectful regard, righteous principles softening the natural disposition, and together winning sinners to loyalty, so believers on earth are a symbol of the family in heaven. Its practice must begin in the home where unchristlike action must not drive away the Holy Spirit and where the works of Christ must be done, and in the testing time this instruction proves who is worthy of admittance into God's family.

The prayer embraces all who become laborers together with God in every line, called to a high standard of perfect oneness through the perfection that is in Christ and to great privileges and heights and depths of experience for all who hide the life with Christ in God. It includes the blended work of schools established near sanitariums where students gain an education in present truth and learn how to be ministers of healing, and workers in the publishing house in Nashville drawn to one another by the cords of Christ's love with no estrangement and no divided minds and divided interests. It means ministers in word and doctrine believing and living out every verse of John 13-17 before fellow ministers, needing conversion to understand genuine missionary work by those acquainted with present truth. It embraces physicians, ministers and medical missionary workers, and believers of every nationality and language, sharing one judgment, purpose, foundation of truth and spirit while working together for the salvation of others. Believers may be scattered across the world, yet they are to be closely united in Christ with God's Word as their rule of action, their unselfish love, courtesy and regard bearing witness to the gospel, while strife works against the prayer.

The united church is to act as one living missionary agency under the control of the same Spirit, with chosen servants of contrasting and diverse gifts blending together in harmonious effort, each faithfully filling his appointed place with kindness and love revealed in every word and act. Though diverse in mind and ideas like branches in the same vine and parent stock, believers are bound together by the shared work of converting souls to the truth, bearing fruit together as Christ's love and transforming grace overcome barriers and differences. When seeking the likeness of Christ and winning souls to righteousness becomes their shared aim, contention ends and they work together in advancing the truth rather than spending time and resources spreading error and opposing one another. This unity is answered when workers unite to reach varied minds and bring a decided influence for good in warning the cities, and then the world will know that they are His disciples. Christ gives believers power as they advance in the work He appointed for them, bringing His light to all nations, with every addition becoming one more agency for redemption, speaking and working together to convince the world that God sent His Son to save those who receive the words of truth.

The call applies as instruction to every church, school, sanitarium, printing establishment and Christian home, telling how to receive His grace, with those who refuse His conditions unworthy to belong to His people when He comes in glory. Oneness must be the keynote of every action by those in positions of influence, harmonizing with brethren and refusing any move that creates discord, especially governing relations with those carrying publishing responsibilities, because division is watched critically, vindicates past wrong moves and results in loss of souls. Applied to the two leading papers, they are to remain one without variance, sharing the same spirit, faith, purpose and work of preparing a people to stand in the day of the Lord. This oneness requires counseling together under God's equal control in every part of the vineyard, with no Jerusalem centers, no kingly power and no tying of the work in different countries by contracts to a central place, but working to build up one another, keeping the same principles in every branch and refusing to treat any branch as vastly more important than the others. Close union is necessary to follow the Lord's order on the color question, requiring conversion of both white and colored members, because unconverted, opinionated and quarrelsome traits stir conflict and self-seeking.

God wants His people in perfect union to meet the troublous times and severe conflict before them, sanctified through the truth and essential to their strength and safety in the last days. Every believer who accepts Christ as personal Saviour and keeps the commandments has duty to answer that prayer made just before His great sacrifice by living under the control of the Holy Spirit and serving Christ, and neglecting it shows disregard for His expressed will. Lack of union and love is seen and marked by unbelievers and brings reproach on the truth, while heeded and carried out oneness lets the world know believers have the truth and compels acknowledgment. In the final crisis opposing forces will unite against God's witnesses while the adversary seeks to divide those who uphold the truth, so God's people are to resist division and build up His work with the Bible as guide, not hating one another nor spending more strength fighting one another than in warfare against Satan's forces. That harmony requires accord with His Word and Sabbath principles rather than political views out of harmony with truth.

Nature of Oneness

The oneness is being one in the Father and the Son as the Father is in Christ and Christ is in the Father, patterned on and grounded in that shared union with God. It was asked not for the first disciples alone but for all who would believe through their word in every generation, and it is joined to love and to being united in the truth, coming through sanctification by obedience to the word under the Holy Spirit rather than by surrendering truth or compromising with the world. Followers are to reflect that unity between Father and Son as a convincing public witness that the Father sent Christ to save sinners, and separating because others do not act as one thinks best is contrary to genuine Bible Christianity.

It is oneness of spirit, mind, judgment, purpose, faith and character in feeling, thought, word and action, speaking the same things with no divisions. Christ's purpose was for disciples of different characters, training, habits and ways of life to become one in feeling, thought and action by being united with Him as He is united with the Father, so the world would know the Father sent Christ and loved them as He loved Christ. That spiritual unity is shown in shared coordinated lives made possible through sanctification by the truth, with transformed character giving a living representation of truth, and it can be formed only as believers give up their own way for God's way, holding even when scattered, without insisting on their own way or acting from unsanctified dispositions.

The unity does not merge persons or erase distinctness and individuality, for Father and Son remain distinct persons and believers keep their own identity, personality and distinct work. Believers are to be one with Christ in the same way Christ is one with the Father, two distinct personages united in purpose, sanctified through the truth, with strength to convince the world and to join Christ's work of saving and restoring to union with God. That essential oneness leaves personality intact, with diversity within unity like branches of one vine differing yet belonging to the same stock, conformed to the divine image to share Christ's consciousness and feelings while loving and trusting one another in fellowship with God and bearing fruit that glorifies God.

It brings together disciples of differing characters, training, temperaments, abilities and kinds of work in harmony, not uniformity, requiring seeking agreement despite differences of thought, opinion or method. It means unity and harmony in faith and purpose with a shared understanding of where the Spirit is working, gathering together rather than staying apart, bringing in the ignorant and opposing to hear where the Lord can impress hearts instead of leaving them in darkness. Seeking it in faith and practice is the duty and privilege of believers to be in harmony with heaven, united in closest fellowship and love as one body under one Head, believing and speaking the same things with one heart and mouth, in proportion to illumination and sanctification as enlightenment by the Spirit brings harmony in understanding truth and judgment with peace and mutual confidence. That same union prevailed after the resurrection when believers were of one heart and mind, and even the difference over circumcision and the Gentiles was soon settled through divine illumination so they were perfectly joined in the same mind and judgment, which is always the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

Unity preserves distinct gifts, roles and manners of labor yet blends workers in concerted action under Christ as Head, like branches of one vine, soldiers under a captain, or members of one body and temple. It does not require everyone to do the same work, for each has a distinct role and the Holy Spirit joins varied efforts into one coordinated work to draw people to Christ, with different gifts faithfully serving together in kindness and love so that one worker may reach those who rejected another. God's people led out upon the platform of eternal truth are not to be at variance with opposite faiths each moving independently, taking own views of Bible truth without regard to brethren or asserting right to believe and speak as one pleases, but are to come to unity of the faith through the diversity of gifts upon the one platform of the commandments of God and the faith and testimony of Jesus, a straight chain of connected Bible truth searched out with prayer. Their unity is to be expressed in concerted action as parts of an army under one head rather than scattered independent efforts, requiring self-restraint and setting aside personal wishes, joined in tender union where words or actions fostering separation, suspicion or unbelief dishonor Christ. Instruction to strive against variance includes esteeming and improving each person's gifts and not hindering another because he does not work in one's exact track.

The oneness is inclusive love for all believers, not exclusive attachment to one or two persons, and does not require everyone to imitate one another or view every text in exactly the same way. A soul in harmony with Christ becomes one with Him and with all who believe, and exclusive infatuation failing to develop lovely character has no root in Christ nor outgrowth of the Spirit's sanctification, while each advance leads toward perfect oneness by which the world knows the Father sent the Son and loves believers as the Son. Differences of disposition, temperament, intelligence, experience, way of working and managing temporal matters, gifts, and emphasis or understanding of Scripture can coexist without discord, and even a mistaken interpretation is no reason to divide. Each is to do appointed work in own capacity while respecting others in unselfish harmony through Christ's Spirit, without quarreling, seeking supremacy or ruling one another when filled with His Spirit.

The unity is heaven-born, not worldly consolidation, joining believers with Christ and heavenly angels as one symmetrical body subject to sanctified intelligence. It reaches through the ages to all who believe, leading out a people to stand in perfect unity on the platform of eternal truth and come into unity of the faith, purged by refining from unrighteousness and discord to build up rather than tear down and concentrate energies as a peculiar people zealous of good works. It is a sacred privilege extending to fellowship with heavenly angels, and describes the close brotherhood God desires for the human family which angels work to bring about.

The oneness is complete and perfect, a sacred pledge and badge of discipleship requiring perfection of character after Christ's earthly pattern, attainable and to be pursued with perseverance. Believers are to be united in God as the Father is in Christ and Christ in the Father, with lessons to be studied and practiced shaping habits and life in living faith and balanced growth, bearing good fruit as they seek to overcome. It is not separate individuals doing as they please but believers united by great gospel principles, molded by one Spirit after the divine likeness into channels of light demonstrating the gospel's power, coming only as each works for its perfection through the Holy Spirit with Christ living within in submission to God's authority, mind and will, with love, compassion and tenderness drawing all to Christ the center. This high and holy attainment is made possible through faith, brings the benefits of truth, and is evidence to the world that the Father sent Christ and that believers are one with the Father.

The oneness prayed for is the unity of the faith of the church, to be reached through Heaven-appointed spiritual gifts rather than human creeds which produce sects and division. The spiritual gifts Christ ordained were given to help bring the church to that unity and perfection as the scriptural standard, in place of human creeds which shut out the gifts. The prayer does not assign gifts to the apostles alone to deny them to other believers, but shows Christ leading out a people into unity of the faith to be one as He is one with the Father, yielding differences of opinion to come into union with the body with one mind and judgment. That blessed state of unity, faith and love like apostolic days when believers were of one heart and soul speaking boldly, one body and Spirit with one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, is reached when professed people receive light from the Word with humbled hearts seeking preparation, and then the Spirit and power are manifested, as the first angel's message separating from worldly corruption aroused to see backsliding and brought those who accepted it from different denominations with barriers hurled down, creeds shattered, false views corrected, pride swept away, wrongs righted and hearts united in fellowship with love and joy.

Unity in the faith is seen in those united in Bible truth in all important points, such as the seventh-day Sabbath, while those opposing it are divided, and divided Protestant churches with conflicting creeds do not display it. Those who believe the seventh day is the Sabbath are united in views and understanding of Bible truths in all important points believing and speaking the same things, whereas opposers are cut up and divided with hardly two agreed, each tearing down the other's position while alike refusing the Sabbath. Divided Protestant churches professing to take doctrines from the Bible yet holding conflicting creeds and theories leave the world unsure of truth, a confusion that is the work of humanity and Satan, not God.

Means Forming Unity

The oneness comes through sanctification by obedience to the truth of Scripture and God's law under the Holy Spirit with Christ dwelling within. It is unity of sanctified character and harmonious service, not merely agreement in belief, patterned on the oneness between Father and Son and lived in implicit obedience to the Word in unity and love. It is not gained by surrendering truth, conforming to popular opinion, or compromising with the world, for truth is the basis of unity. In proportion to this unity with Christ is power to save souls, with convincing proclamation and the saving influence of the Spirit manifest, while failure to manifest the grace that makes believers one with Christ as Christ is one with the Father misrepresents the sanctifying influence of truth.

The union is entered by self-renunciation, faith, and obedience, and sustained through daily communion with Christ. It depends on renewing of the mind by the Holy Spirit to walk in newness of life with forgiveness received from Christ, a vital saving union gained by eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of God by feeding on His Word. As branches united to the vine and members of His body, believers are nourished by the Father's love resting in the Son, which enters the soul, inspires gratitude, and frees from spiritual weakness, pride, vanity, selfishness, and whatever deforms character. When this oneness is believed, understood, and known by experience, self is dead, Christ lives within as a cleansed vessel, daily reception of the Spirit brings eternal life, and the character of God is revealed. This bond is closer and more saving than natural family ties, aligning thoughts, inclinations, desires, and appetites with the Lord so nothing remains separate and the heart is in harmony with Him.

The Holy Spirit makes believers one, and the oneness comes by being united to Christ as He is united to the Father and by partaking of the Spirit of Christ. Through the Spirit, obedience to God's law, and living union with Christ, believers share the divine nature, are made complete in Christ, are cleansed from evil and made like Him, and are joined to one another. Receiving His Spirit and love and living in Him grounds unity in God's truth and word, joins believers in Christ's work, and removes quarreling because Christ's love is in the heart. The glory the Father gave Christ is given now as privilege to receive, to lighten their own and others' pathway and to shine in countenance, words, and testimony, through which God loves them with the same love He has for His Son, bringing continual gladness, joy, thankfulness, and gratitude. The light must be willingly received as a taper kindled from a bright candle, for those staying outside and refusing to come in remain in darkness.

Oneness exists only in proportion to illumination and sanctification. The more fully believers receive the enlightenment of the living Spirit, the more nearly they harmonize in understanding truth, unite in judgment, gain confidence in one another, and are blessed with peace, believing and speaking the same things with one heart and one mouth glorifying God. As believers draw nearer to Christ they are drawn nearer to one another, coming to the same cross where hearts blend in perfect unity, and truth dwelling in hearts draws them together in blessed likeness. This was seen after the resurrection and ascension when believers were of one heart and mind, and the temporary difference over admitting uncircumcised Gentiles was soon settled through divine illumination so they were perfectly joined in the same mind and judgment, always the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Cherishing truth in the heart produces this unity, and the progress of this work in each soul determines the strength of the church.

Union with Christ naturally produces unity with one another, and the closer the union with Christ the closer the union with one another. Believers do not draw spiritual life from one another but from Christ, like branches drawing nourishment from the true vine, receiving life from Him and bearing the Spirit's fruit though remaining many branches. This comes through each person's consecration — placing the whole being on His side, obeying truth, personal daily communion, and faith working through love purifying the soul — and cannot be secured by human methods, for a natural self-centered spirit prevents it. Christ's presence by faith in hearts is power and life making the church complete, while variance, disaffection, selfishness, and conceit as fruits of a divided heart work against oneness and disunion leads the world to conclude believers are not of God.

The unity requires surrender to God, being emptied of self with Christ formed within, dying to self, laying sin on the Burden-bearer, and putting away selfishness and worldliness. It follows purity when every sin is confessed and forsaken and anything between the person and God or brethren is removed, through grace upon the heart making Christ's blood efficacious, producing hatred of the sin separating the soul from God. It comes as believers overcome self, wrath, bitterness, malice, contention, and evil speaking, live humbly dependent wholly on Christ, and reflect His spirit of kindness, love, and tenderness.

It requires renouncing self-will, self-exaltation, pride, self-sufficiency, jealousy, envy, evil surmising, fault-finding, evil speaking, bitterness, impatience, and malice, and cherishing kindness, compassion, forbearance, meekness, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, hope, and love through grace received by faith. Pride, seeking first place, and self-will oppose unity, and believers are to press together, pray for unity, work for it with determined effort, and renounce self-will in dividing matters. The church's harmony so fostered is its credential and evidence to the world that Jesus is the Son of God sent to give grace, light, and truth.

It is pursued by earnest prayer, childlike Bible study, openness in discussing differences, and seeking God's help to understand truth. Believers preserve it by setting aside prejudice, bringing differing views to Scripture, treating one another with brotherly love, meekness, and humility, and refusing to force Scripture to fit personal opinions or make differences larger. This requires willingness to learn, to yield differences of opinion and cherished views and personal preferences dividing them, to come together as one body with one mind and judgment, and to exercise every faculty to see eye to eye. Presenting apparent differences before the world without such effort works outside Christ's lines, lacks the divine imprint, and is not endorsed by His Spirit.

It is practiced through counsel, shared purpose, mutual help, bearing burdens, submitting to one another, forgiving, dealing directly with grievances, praying together, and cooperation that builds one another up under one great Head. It is shown by loving one another, working together in heart and action, unselfishly sharing God's gifts and helping fellow workers rather than pursuing own interests, using different talents in faithful unselfish service to uplift Christ and benefit all. It requires feeling need of one another, helping in various duties, uniting forces to strengthen one another, tender love free from jealousy, criticism, and self-uplifting, and does not require a single central authority controlling the work everywhere.

It must be cultivated with strenuous persevering effort by the Spirit's work, and believers themselves answer the prayer by cooperating with Christ in earnest effort for sanctification through truth and giving themselves wholly to God's service. Seeking that oneness in faith and practice is duty and privilege to be in harmony with heaven, requiring converting power upon the heart, Christ abiding within, humbling before God, and drawing nigh to God to draw nigh to one another. All heaven works to answer and waits for human agents to respect every word and carry out its principles in thoughts, words, and actions, holding with firm determination as true disciples; neglecting grieves Christ while seeking satisfies infinite love and brings joy as heart is bound to heart. There can be no perfection of character while at variance, divided, criticizing and drawing away, for love breaks every barrier through unselfish Christlike love, and answer is assured to those faithfully doing duty and growing through fellowship into Christlike character.

Christ gives believers the glory the Father gave Him, which is character and righteousness, with Christ in them and the Father in Him, that they may be made perfect in one. Surrounding sanctification through truth, this gift makes them one even as Father and Son are one, complete in one, a request almost too great for expectation, and Christ answers by appearing in their lives through impartation of His Spirit. This unity carries eternal importance and is answered only when dissension and strife are purged, evil thinking and expressions put away, accusation refused, and believers work in love under claims to Christ to do God's expressed will. He thereby gives His elect church into the Father's arms as consecrated High Priest and faithful Shepherd, sent into the world as He was sent, sanctified through truth; yet the prayer remains unanswered while ministers and members remain envious, full of strife, and destitute of love.

Sinful fallen people can be brought through redemption into exalted union with Christ corresponding to His unity with the Father, partaking of the divine nature and sharing His divine-human life. Through knowing Christ and being conformed to God's character, faith in Christ enables overcoming fleshly weakness to become sanctified, holy, cleansed from sin in this life, with hope of the redeemed's joys to come. This shows God's power to change sinful hearts, make believers partakers of Christ's perfection, form character after the divine likeness, and join varied efforts with distinct roles into one coordinated work to draw people to Christ. Like branches receiving life from the vine, God's love leads to obeying His holy law and showing Christ's character.

Being one with Christ is a living connection like branches joined to a vine, receiving support, strength, and nourishment from Him and bearing fruit as visible evidence of belonging, by which the Father is glorified. Receiving Christ into the heart through heart reception of truth, not mere intellect, changes life and character to tenderness, compassion, humility, and contrition, loving what He loved and hating sin. It is a mystical spiritual union putting never-fading life in the soul requiring an abiding Christ, open to every soul accepting Him as personal Saviour, joined with meekness, teachability, obedience, earnest prayer, and faith working through love purifying the soul. Keeping it means weaving Christ into plans, making self far less, quieting human voices in councils, and letting Christ preside as counsellor, and then truth triumphs.

Becoming one with Christ separates from the world, requires choosing God above all, wholehearted devotion, beholding Christ to be changed into His likeness, and living pure holy lives. Christ's becoming one with humanity reveals the selfless love and unquestioning faith making this possible, and His coming in human form facing temptation shows victorious overcomers can overcome through union with Him. This union is expressed in communion and wholehearted love, oneness in spirit, thought, and aim, with Christ living in heart keeping safe from surrounding evil, elevating to overcomers bearing God's likeness.

Purpose and Witness

The oneness is given so that the world may believe that the Father sent Jesus as Redeemer to save sinners, and this unity of all who believe through the disciples' word convinces the world that Christianity is genuine. Believers are to be one in the Father and the Son after the pattern of the Father's union with Jesus and Jesus' union with the Father, and Christ prayed this not for the first disciples alone but for every generation to the close of time. Their unity is to be perfected in Christian love and pure Bible truth without sophistry, joining them to speak the same things and stand together, and those who separate because others do not act as they think best are not living as genuine Bible Christians. Christ's presence in them brings them toward complete unity, excluding self-magnification and rivalry for status, and when lived it helps convince and convert the world.

Through this union the world is to know that the Father loves believers as He loves Christ, accepting them through Christ's imputed righteousness. The glory the Father gave Christ, which is character, Christ has given to believers, with Christ in them and the Father in Christ, that they may be made perfect and complete in one. This oneness is of the same nature as that between Christ and His Father and carries eternal importance, answered only when dissension and strife are purged and every sincere believer puts away evil thinking, evil expressions, and constant accusation to work in love under claims to Christ to do God's expressed will. All believers joined to the Lord and to one another in Christian love share a common spiritual influence and have opportunity to give this witness, which Satan opposes by temptations to selfishness working envy, jealousy, and evil surmising.

Believers' harmony, unity, kindness, love, and transformed lives are the credentials and irrefutable argument of Christ's mission, testifying to the power and principles of truth and to God's goodness and benevolence. In perfect oneness they represent their unity with Christ as His messengers, instrumentalities, and co-laborers, made partakers of the divine nature and escaping the world's corruption, with no provision for variance, pulling apart, or walking selfishly alone in independent judgment. This oneness lets them bear credentials that Jesus is Redeemer whose blood cleanses from sin and makes them light to the world, coming by laying sin upon the Burden-bearer who longs to save the sinner while hating the sin. It is shown as believers turn from sin and seek the Spirit's grace, act from pure unselfish motives, love God and the Redeemer, and show tender regard in courtesy, compassion, sympathy, and efforts to help and bless, so people may believe God sent His Son and be saved.

The unity is a distinguishing sign showing Christ is the Son of the living God, sent by the Father and able to give salvation and eternal life to everyone who believes, displaying His glory and God's love and proving His religion is real in His disciples. Christ made unity the badge of discipleship, and this oneness shows God's power to change sinful hearts, make believers partakers of Christ's perfection, and form character after the divine likeness. It is the strongest witness that God sent His Son to reconcile the world to heaven and to die for sinners, and it must exist among God's people before Christ can give the church the growth and power He desires. This visible unity binding hearts in Christian love is evidence of what God's truth and divine grace can do, coming as believers become partakers of the divine nature.

The conversion of unbelievers depends on how distinctly Christ is revealed in believers' lives and words, as people see the beauty of God's Word and Jesus in them. When hearts are filled with love and compassion and conduct is marked by Christlike tenderness and courtesy, words have power to convict souls, and people come to believe through the servants' communication of truth. Readiness to separate when brethren do not do exactly what one thinks best proves need to become a Bible Christian by studying Christ's character to understand His love for the world. Believers' oneness with God enables the world to see Christ in them, for those receiving heaven's light reveal it in work, and by steadily beholding His perfectly obedient life they grow like Him and become more effective, testifying by growth, usefulness, and cheerful service that Christ came to save from sin.

By love and unity believers bear witness to Christ's majesty, virtue, and power to take away sin, reveal His character, and show they have been with Jesus and learned of Him. Unity with Christ joins them to one another in mind, purpose, and character without making them one person, through the Spirit, obedience to God's law, and living union by which they share the divine nature and are made complete in Him. As Christ represented God's truth and character, followers are sent to represent Christ's character, made possible through sanctification by the truth and expressed in mutual love, confidence, love among brethren as one brotherhood working with Christ to save humanity, and character reflecting Christ. The prayer is answered when laborers sweep away discord, put away hereditary and cultivated traits, repent and are converted with deep humiliation, are holy in conduct, devote heart, soul, mind, and strength with unity of purpose, love as brethren and assemble together, and then the Spirit bears witness through them, souls are convicted and converted, and they are prepared to live together in heaven, for Christ is not divided against Himself.

The unity of followers with varied dispositions, temperaments, and gifts, brought into harmonious service to speak the truth in love, is a standing miracle evidencing what divine grace can do. Only God's miraculous power can bring such different people to work together with shared aim, not requiring the same gifts but calling workers to follow the same Spirit and pray and work earnestly for harmony. This unity comes as people obey Christ, let character be shaped by His, surrender will to His, and draw nearer to God and one another, so small differences do not destroy fellowship. It is the miracle-working power of grace transforming character until men are as angels in character and life, worked not in human power but in the name of Jesus by putting on Christ and being guided by Him, and where the church refuses His guidance this miracle is missing before a fallen quarreling world. When thus one, connected with Christ and complete in one body through Him one with the Father in bonds of love and perfected through sufferings after His example, they give evidence of following prophecy, all take knowledge that they have been with Jesus, and they stand as a holy happy people loved by Christ, while merely nominal Christians and a contentious spirit over minor points break the prayer.

The oneness of His ransomed church is Christ's specified recompense for His conquests and His glory, through which God's manifold wisdom is made known to heavenly powers. Christ's messengers sharing His interests and revealing Him serve His Father's glory and His glory, becoming heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ to an immortal inheritance, joined to one another in holy fellowship through Christ. This calls them to reject dissension and instead love, honor, and patiently care for one another, expressing union in faithful service as Jesus came to show how to live and form character approved by God.

Disregard of the prayer gives the world occasion to doubt the truth of Christianity and puts speeches against believers into unbelievers' mouths about want of union and harmony, which are in some cases true and bring greater guilt on those with great light. Oneness among those claiming truth is the proof the world reads of whether they are of God, and disunion makes the world conclude they cannot be of God because they work against each other. Being one with each other comes first in order to be one with Christ, for those not yoked with Him pull the wrong way, and division comes when temperament and passion meet passion in collision, which Satan uses to bring confusion heard in loud voices in committees, boards, and public assemblies opposing reform and purity. Answering requires repentance and redeeming the time, each studying to answer it, seeking its spirit in the heart, practicing it daily at home, in family, and in church, weaving Christ into plans, making self far less important, quieting human voices in councils, and letting Christ preside as counselor, and then unhappy dissensions end, love to Jesus and one another prevails, truth triumphs, and the world believes.

Blessings and Power

The oneness for which Christ prayed just before His crucifixion is strength that all the powers of hell cannot break, while division is weakness, and it is essential to spiritual life, power, growth and success. It is patterned on the oneness of the Father in the Son and the Son in the Father, with believers made one in Them, and it lays individual responsibility on every member of the visible church as a worker in the Lord's vineyard to do his utmost to preserve harmony, union and love after that pattern. Such unity is the evidence the world cannot withstand and controvert that God sent Jesus as Redeemer, the most convincing argument leading the world to believe, coming through complete consecration, sanctification by truth, implicit obedience to the Word, and unity and love among brethren. Those so united are filled with power, and in proportion to unity with Christ is power to save souls, with convincing power attending the proclamation of truth and the saving influence of the Holy Spirit manifest. It is not separate individuals doing as they please but believers united by the great principles of the gospel, molded by one Spirit after the divine likeness into channels of light, with no provision for variance, pulling apart, or walking selfishly alone in independent judgment. In their perfect oneness they represent unity with Christ and testify to the goodness and benevolence of God in making them partakers of the divine nature, a standing miracle proving God sent Christ to be Saviour, under obligation to represent Him full of grace and truth and to love one another as He loved them.

Living this prayer in practical life makes unity a strong defense guarding the church against Satan's attacks and gives strength to withstand the test and to stand in the time of testing and in the shaking time. Unity with Christ and with one another is the church's only safety, strength and perfection, and spiritual perfection required by the law is provided only in union with Christ, with Christ in believers and the Father in Christ making them perfect in one. When bearers of Christ's name fight among themselves they weaken witness and give Satan reason to regard them as no threat, while dissension and seeking the highest place leave the prayer unanswered and bring weakness, self-exaltation placing people in Satan's power and preparing them for deception. Those who live unity through practical love, mutual help, pity, courtesy and humility will stand the test coming upon the world, for man having no perfection in himself becomes a partaker of the divine nature and an overcomer through the infinite sacrifice of the Son and the merits of His blood. Linked to victory over temptation, this oneness reveals that as Christ faced human temptations so people can become victorious overcomers through Him.

Perfection of character means perfection in unity after the pattern of the Father in Christ and Christ in the Father, calling for unity in diversity with each worker doing appointed work in harmony under Christ as great Head, with no single mind controlling and no friction, united as branches to a vine in belief and knowledge of truth. This oneness comes by partaking of the divine nature and becoming one in spirit with Christ, opening great possibilities for faith to grasp. Where this unity and love are lacking God cannot glorify His name through His people, and the sick among them are not healed. A fitful, careless, indifferent spirit that breaks that unity wounds the heart of Christ.

The unity is an inward, living union with one another and with God, expressed in peace, love and unity, joined to the love of Jesus to replace coldness and hardness of heart. Christ brings disciples into this living union, and under the Holy Spirit they live lives bearing uncontrovertible evidence to the power of truth, bound in Christian love to the Father and the Son. Perfected in Christian love and in the pure truth of the Bible without sophistry, it excludes self-magnification and rivalry for status. Their unity is the credential of Christ's mission, convincing proof to the world that God sent His Son to save sinners, to make them partakers of His perfection by changing the sinful heart and forming character after the divine likeness.

This oneness brings continual gladness and joy and thankfulness and gratitude, with rest, peace and joy necessary for enjoying heaven in this life and receiving eternal blessing. The glory the Father gave Christ is given to believers now as privilege to receive, to lighten their own pathway and others' and to shine on countenances and in words and testimonies to impress minds everywhere. It comes by being united to Christ as He is united to the Father and by partaking of His Spirit, through which God loves believers with the same love He has for His Son. The light must be willingly received, as a taper kindled from a bright shining candle, for those who stay outside and refuse to come in remain in darkness. When thus united through submission harmoniously to the Spirit rather than each striving to be a center, with the cold iron of self melted in surrender with conquering faith, God is present in assemblies, and assembling in faith they receive comfort and hope, light and peace from Christ.

That oneness was a constant joy to God because in Christ He saw one in the world who would not misrepresent Him but reflected His own character. In that unity God is glorified in believers as He is glorified in the Son, and God loves them as He loves the Son. Drawing near to God individually brings believers near to one another, so coming to the same cross blends hearts in perfect unity as Christ is one with the Father, to be sought in spirit, understanding and faith. This makes them representatives of Christ and lights amid moral darkness, with solidity of character, knowing what faith is and loving one another, with Christ speaking and working through them and diffusing light around them. It does not destroy distinct personality, for Father and Son remain distinct persons in their oneness, and believers joined to Christ keep their own identity and personality.

Preserving this unity raises fallen man, causes God to love believers as He loved His Son, results in the sinner being saved, and glorifies God eternally. It calls believers to strive for unity, cultivate love, press together, work as one and be at peace, uprooting suspicion, envy, jealousy, evil thinking and speaking, spiritual pride and love of supremacy, and becoming as little children to become members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King. When believers are one, God is present in assemblies, and the Holy Spirit in rich and constant supply with angels works with them, displaying God's love fully through the church to the world. United communion with Christ, expressed through love and putting away criticism, jealousy, evil suspicion, discord, obstinacy and self-worship, enables believers to work in ways that convince others of gospel truth, impress unbelievers with its power, and in united testimony to Bible truth convict and convert souls.

Answering the prayer brings reformation and transformation of character first in believers' own ranks and then in those for whom they labor, preparing them to live together in unity in heaven, for Christ is not divided against Himself. The prayer is not yet answered while ministers and members proclaiming the gospel remain envious, full of strife, variance, evil surmising and discord, destitute of love, dishonoring Jesus and blocking conviction and success. Believers themselves answer it when in word and deed they put away variance, sweep away discord and hereditary and cultivated traits, repent and are converted with deep humiliation, are sanctified through truth and holy in conduct, devote heart, soul, mind and strength with unity of purpose, love as brethren and assemble together. Then the Spirit bears witness they are His instrumentalities, the world takes knowledge they have been with Jesus and learned of Him, and efforts for unbelievers become acceptable to convict and convert souls. The answer comes when contention ends and the one absorbing question is who shall approach nearest Christ's likeness and do most to win souls, with truth brought from the outer court into the sanctuary of the soul giving divine vitality, and Christians must learn to dwell together in love and unity here in order to dwell together hereafter, which requires that measure of Christ's grace enabling them to do so.

Wholly belonging to Christ in this unity, as wholly one with Christ as Christ is one with the Father, is a great responsibility and the highest measure of character, bringing the richest blessings a person can enjoy. This oneness gives precious victories over discouragement, brings His blessing and makes a person a blessing, enables working out God's righteous will by walking humbly with Him, and gives constant reason to rejoice in a precious sympathizing Saviour to whom every perplexity can be taken as sure Helper. It enables use of abilities to advance heaven's kingdom and to work as Christ works through redeeming power, shaping after the divine likeness. It is a privilege open to every soul, requiring meekness, humility, teachability and obedience, joined with earnest prayer and faithful practice of faith working through love and purifying the soul, involving surrender of self so Christ may reign, giving up cherished ideas and plans, yielding mind to Christ, with church membership a pledge to seek this unity, deny self, sacrifice for the kingdom and overcome hindrances to growth.

All true believers will be one, bound heart to heart by the warm love of a living Saviour through faith working by love and purifying the soul, with the cross as pledge of fellowship pictured by the seamless robe. Divisions, coldness between brethren and controversy disfigure that robe and dishonor and humiliate Christ in His professed people. The oneness prayed for will come when watchmen see eye to eye, the trumpet gives a certain sound, and envy and vexing cease. This oneness begins in homes and in the church and brings God's salvation in measure never seen or dreamed of, needing no announcement, for if the Spirit is in the heart it comes out in life, and through this visible unity even some who ridicule solemn truth will see the foolishness of their course and turn to the Lord, the world knowing their love is not of the world but of God.

Hindrances to Unity

Satan is continually at work to make the prayer of no effect by keeping believers in variance, hatred, bitterness and discord, knowing the value of brotherly love for the strength and prosperity of the church and understanding the prayer better than its members do. Union and love was the burden of Christ's heart because He foresaw severe trials to the close of time and that the greatest danger would be bitterness and division, looking with tender compassion on dissensions that distract and weaken His church and pledging to be its helper. By witnessing bickerings, strifes and dissension unbelievers become disgusted with Christianity and fastened in unbelief, while united believers exert a telling influence that leads the world to believe the Father sent Christ and loves believers as He loved Christ. Anyone who brings weakness, sorrow and discouragement upon God's people through perverse ways and tempers works directly against the prayer and aids God's enemies, and those professing greater light must show greater perfection, deeper devotion and sanctified lives.

The oneness patterned on the Father in the Son and the Son in the Father rules out dividing believers into separate organizations on nationality or language, separating into distinct disconnected independent parties, or drawing apart from God's rule. It is not separate individuals doing as they please or walking selfishly alone in independent judgment, but believers united by the great principles of the gospel, molded by one Spirit after the divine likeness into channels of light, submitting will to God's will at every step. Division among believers obstructs the witness that the Father sent Jesus, while perfect oneness testifies to God's goodness in making believers partakers of the divine nature.

The unity excludes self-magnification and rivalry for status and supremacy, and is answered only when dissension, strife, envy, jealousy, pride, selfishness, hatred, evil thinking and evil speaking are purged away. Believers must refuse to stand as accusers, work in love, will to do God's expressed will, and love one another unselfishly without seeking supremacy, for such love gives evidence they follow Christ. Discord, suspicion, criticism, backbiting, jealousy and pursuit of personal honor weaken the church's influence, undermine the purpose of the prayer, discourage unbelievers and dishonor God. Confessing and forsaking sin and removing wrongs bring believers into living union with God, producing courtesy, gentleness, respect and harmony that demonstrate the truth of Christ's words.

Disunion, contention and a wrong impression before the world show the love of God is lost out of the heart and there is no love for brethren, obscure Christ's work, dishonor God, displease Him, and make Christ ashamed to call them brethren. Separation over differences in thought, opinion or method is forbidden, for actions must accord with the prayer and not pull apart, and hatred, jealousy and other wrongs fail to reveal the unity shown in changed lives and Christlike love. Envy, accusation, resentment, unkind thoughts, prejudice and hardness of heart exclude Christ and make the prayer ineffective in those who cherish them, and unity and peace require yielding personal preferences and tendencies without sacrificing divine truth. Gossip, discord, selfishness, evil suspicion and covetousness oppose Christ's purpose, grieve the Holy Spirit and follow the enemy's aims.

Setting oneself apart from the church in prideful independence contradicts the prayer, for pressing together in love is of God while drawing away is of Satan. Allowing love to die by accepting accusations serves sin, while united followers become a holy and powerful people; dissatisfaction, Phariseeism, self-righteousness, human passions and prejudices when another does not meet human measurement become a stumbling block that prevents growing to the full stature of Christ the living Head. Harmony requires putting away a harsh, unfair and exacting spirit, regarding one another as part of God's great firm and counseling together as laborers together with God, which converts the natural man and overcomes defects of character. A natural self-centered spirit prevents unity, which cannot be secured or maintained by human methods but comes only by conversion, consecration, obedience to truth and faith working through love that purifies the soul, joining believers to Christ as branches to the vine. Those truly joined are controlled by one Spirit, stamped with the same image, knit in heaven-born love made possible by Christ's sacrifice, having exchanged selfishness for the heart God gives, differing perhaps in speech yet with quarrelsome spirit and vain glory ceased.

Mere nearness to Christ and outward association do not create oneness, for Judas was as near as believers now yet remained outside Christ and became the sport of Satan's temptations, and all powers must be trained in grace to do acceptable service. The prayer is not yet answered while ministers and members proclaiming the gospel remain envious, full of strife, variance, evil surmising and discord and destitute of love, dishonoring Jesus, wasting opportunities and blocking conviction and success. It is unheeded when ambition and the spirit controlling the nations produce dissension, disorder and seeking of highest place, leaving weakness and vulnerability to deception. It is answered when laborers sweep away discord, repent with deep humiliation, are sanctified through truth, devote all powers with unity of purpose, love as brethren and assemble together, and then the Spirit bears witness that they are His instrumentalities and souls are convicted.

The verse does not justify calling union with corrupt people holy or joining with those who oppose the faith at cost of convictions, nor agreement with lawbreakers, wrong practices or false teaching; true unity rests on a scriptural basis in righteousness, truth, holiness and purity of character, remaining distinct from the world while standing in God's strength. To mix with the world in act, talk and thought while having a name on the church book greatly dishonors God, for oneness means representing in humanity what Christ did and presenting one correct standard so heaven begins below. The unity forbids each moving independently of the body, one believing one thing and another holding opposite faith, taking views of Bible truth without regard to brethren, pressing peculiar views, or believing and talking as one pleases without reference to the faith of the body. God leads out a people upon the exalted platform of eternal truth, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, disciplining them through diversity of gifts and governments to come to unity of the faith, yielding differences of opinion to be joined in one mind and judgment and submitting individual judgment to preserve harmony that convinces the world God sent His Son.

Living Out Unity

Seeking this oneness is the duty and privilege of believers in order to be in harmony with heaven, and they should do all they can to attain it and continually help one another reach it, unifying and striving for it in faith and practice as one body under one Head.
Church members are called to perfect oneness and sanctified harmony as close as the union of Father and Son, ceasing criticism, evil speaking, discord and strife over little misunderstandings and differences, examining their own part in discord rather than assuming they alone are right, and showing kindness, love, patient care and willingness to bear burdens.
Answering requires confessing and forsaking sin, removing wrongs between people, hating the sin that separates from God, overcoming separation to live in harmony, taking every thread of selfishness out, and putting away criticism, standing apart, quarrels, contention, dissension, selfish actions, discourteous words, flaw-picking, disparaging others and seeking to be first.
The unity is to be lived out in daily life through works of righteousness, keeping God's words and commandments, and showing the plan of salvation through life and ministry and not by preaching alone, giving powerful influence to commandment-keeping people when believed and practiced.
It is expressed through love, courtesy, sympathy, compassion, grace, self-denial and service, esteeming others better than self, helping and strengthening the weak, speaking hope and cheer, soothing troubled minds, avoiding stumbling blocks, and reflecting meekness and lowliness.
It is expressed in determined unselfish efforts to help one another, bear burdens, build up the work, encourage rather than discourage, serve and help others find their place, end criticism and strife, form character by obedience and grace, and keep shining without dimming as light amid moral darkness.
Believers must be a unit even when views differ in some points, going personally with soul imbued with God's love and pained at disunity, bringing ideas to the Scriptures with childlike spirit, laying aside prejudice, cherishing brotherly love, seeking common ground, speaking shared truths, refusing to force Scripture to fit opinion, and striving in meekness to see eye to eye.
It requires gathering together rather than staying on the outer skirts, bringing in those who oppose in ignorance to hear, drawing together in even cords in worship and service, directing attention to God rather than human leaders, standing heart to heart and shoulder to shoulder, pressing together, and letting no disunion appear so influence is kept right.
God's people are to work together as an organized church rather than become disorganized and divided into separate groups, becoming a united whole of one mind sanctified through truth cooperating with heavenly intelligences, pulling in one direction in concerted action under order with rank unbroken, in contrast to society's divisions.
Rivalry among believers and institutions damages unity and weakens the missionary spirit, while harmonious cooperation with the Holy Spirit leading shows God is among them without erasing each institution's individuality and distinct work, bringing power not yet seen with no friction between lines of work as complements crowning efforts to prepare people for the Son of man's coming.
That oneness is oneness in interest for perishing souls, each taking individual responsibility in the Lord's vineyard to preserve harmony, union and love, in united rather than scattered effort preparing the way of the Lord, requiring the influence of every member, minister and worker with heaven's treasure and angels making the work a glorious success.
The verse declares God's plain will and holds the divine antidote for the sin of the whole world, carrying on the process by which believers are made one with Christ in this life to be one through eternity, belonging to those seeking eternal life and preserved by obeying Scripture.
The unity is expressed through obedience to Christ's commandment to love one another, belonging with gospel witness by teaching truth by word and example in righteous godly lives, giving the unconverted evidence of believed and practiced truth, loving God supremely and neighbor as self, and treating an erring brother with meekness, patience and forbearance rather than wounding by loveless correction.
Becoming one allows God's love and power to work in reconciliation among brethren, while division between different parts of the work, as between medical missionary work and ministry, shows the Holy Spirit is not working, and united watchmen end Satan's controversy, gain spiritual sight, cease worldly planning, work as Christ worked, and give a clearer louder warning.
The unity removes selfishness and divisions and can lead many to conversion, with Father, Son and Holy Spirit working together for perfect unity whose visible fruit reveals heaven, coming as people set aside self, take Christ's character, and work through the Spirit as God's children.
The oneness comes by loving God supremely and neighbor as self, keeping the new commandment as a step heavenward giving supremacy, making room for greater manifestation of the Spirit, closing ears to reports injuring a neighbor and refusing reproach, as a natural result needing no forced effort.
The unity comes as each follower is fully identified with Christ and shares fellow believers' interests, moving as one rather than acting independently, meeting and working harmoniously in unity of faith bound up with God, for to be one with Christ they must be one with each other.
Those united with Christ can trust He works with them as they maintain oneness with Him in life and work, not walking alone or by separate paths but sinking self, following the Leader step by step, studying His ways, obeying His will, making no move without humble prayer, strengthened by Scripture and beholding Christ with dependence on God not man.
The unity honors God, reveals believers as His children, and witnesses that God sent Christ, connected with sanctifying refining influence, while divisions and opposing teachings undermine it, and where love is not cherished the Lord is not glorified.
Drawing apart displeases Christ and keeps Him from doing much, for self-love, self-esteem, self-sufficiency, self-glorification and love of praise leave no room for Jesus, so those with this hope purify themselves as He is pure to become sanctified vessels fit for every good work, carrying His kind courteous spirit from home into church and councils.
Such earnest devotion in Calvary's light, in self-denial, consecration of every ability, patience, goodness, mercy, sympathy and love representing the Saviour, marks a living church that commends Christ and brings others to truth, requiring sanctified zeal directed to God's glory not human uplift.
The verse calls churches and institutions to practical harmony and faithfulness rather than adopting worldly principles, pressing together in holy life and purity of character rather than conforming to transgressors or being ruled by human opinion and sinful desires.
Believers who have received light on unity are responsible for living in harmony with it, for seeking unity in faith and practice is privilege and duty, the prayer giving instruction and consolation, and division weakens while unity gives strength.
Continuing in truth about Father and Son joins believers to them in love, abiding in Christ, made visible through Christ's work in them as He saves and leads to victory over world, flesh and devil, joined to changed character renewing the church without spot.
The oneness holds believers together with Christ even when scattered across the world without losing distinct identity and personality, requiring giving up their own way for God's way and standing on an elevated platform, to be visible rather than divided into disconnected groups, preserving the church by covenant obedience and mutual strengthening.
Leaving the first love is contrary to the prayer, and those professing greater light as repositories of law with higher standard must show greater perfection of character, deeper devotion, consecration and purer holier lives, letting light shine to brighten the pathway of those in darkness.
No one can enter heaven clinging to human habits, for oneness means representing in humanity what Christ did, laboring with God for perishing souls forgetting ease and unbelief, advancing in righteousness truth and holiness, presenting one correct standard elevating all, so heaven begins below, learned on earth with truth cherished, for the lawless loveless impolite cannot enter heaven's family.
Those with truth have no need of despondency or vain apprehension while beneath the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness, because this prayer stands for them and serves as help in every emergency for those repenting and seeking fresh grace, strength and the Spirit's power.
The oneness does not come from merely following conscience, since even strictly conscientious people work against tested brethren when conscience is not in harmony with the Word, so conscience must be enlightened by Scripture study and prayer until established, with confidence in brethren who have stood temptation, studied and digested by every church and institution.
Such unity is wonderful, too wonderful to fully comprehend, glorifying God not by counterworking but by unity based on belief of truth, never working at cross purposes and ever keeping God's glory in view.
Unity is a privilege for those meeting the conditions of belonging to Christ, expressed as being blended in Him as His life is one with the Father, by abiding in Jesus.

Unity is to demonstrate the gospel's holy principles to the unbelieving world under the Lord's rule through sanctification by truth in united labor, drawing believers together in love around Christ instead of acting independently doing as they please, with no partition walls, party strife, or independence, consecrated to serve as channels of God's love causing joy among angels.
True grace makes believers partakers of the divine nature escaping corruption through lust, giving enduring union opening rich eternal happiness, sanctified by the Spirit reflecting Christ's light to save others, gained by searching the Word as leaves of the tree of life, learning the plan of salvation and how to work for others.
When believers are at variance they cannot be branches of the True Vine, and disagreement is inconsistent with it, while fighting among themselves weakens witness giving Satan reason to claim no threat, and self-exaltation places people in Satan's power preparing them for deception, whereas union gives perfection, overcoming through Christ's sacrifice and victory over temptation.
Believers who separate because others do not act as they think best or do exactly what they think best are not living as genuine Bible Christians, needing to study Christ's character and love for the world and understand His relation to the Father, while fault-finders exalting self are to receive faithful reproof not honor.
The prayer is to guide the church's creed, and division dishonors God, while clear pointed testimony helps share one mind and judgment.
The unity is formed as Jesus reigns in the heart displacing coldness, evil suspicions and bad thoughts, through learning His meekness and lowliness and receiving His Spirit, leaving self out and aiming at God's glory, with cleansing blood joining hearts as branches to the vine without requiring all to adopt one another's ideas.
Unity is essential to shared work rather than scattered individual effort, in united effort preparing the way of the Lord in love and service, maintaining unity in plans and actions in every country setting aside selfishness and own way, hearing to do God's will and joining talents to win souls in coordinated action not wasted.
The verse calls for care to preserve unity and not enlarge disagreements or display divisions before the world, for public contention weakens testimony, undermines it, brings reproach marked by unbelievers, while heeded oneness compels the world to acknowledge believers have truth.
The unity crosses territorial, racial and social divisions by the Spirit in brotherly sympathy removing selfish barriers, crossing national boundaries removing barriers in service, uniting different nationalities in one judgment and purpose, and close union with Christ is necessary to follow the Lord's order on the color question requiring conversion of both white and colored members from opinionated quarrelsome traits.
The verse is part of instruction to every church, school, sanitarium, printing establishment and Christian home telling how to receive grace in John 15-17, and those refusing His conditions will be unworthy when He comes, preserved by respecting authority and discipline, putting welfare ahead of personal judgment, surrendering self and submitting judgment, for division dishonors Christ while union gives strength.
Meekness, kindness and tenderness answer the prayer and bring angelic guard, while stumbling blocks work against it, answered by patience, forbearance, refusing retaliation or dislike, suspicion, and treating others with patience and kindness guiding daily attitudes.
In every country workers must set aside selfishness and insistence on own way and maintain unity in plans and actions after Christ's pattern, joining efforts strength to strength rather than seeking advantage or weakening another part.
Christ desires holy selfless oneness grounded in union with Father and Son to show the world the Father sent Christ, and selfishness, variance, strife and discord prevent it, so those not seeking it cannot be a power for good or impart what they have not received, while the truly converted press together without division or unwise authority by the Spirit.
The oneness requires the influence of every member and of ministers and workers to prepare the way for God's light and glory, every soul under tribute, with heaven's treasure and angels making the work a wonderful success, reflected in harmonious order obeying His commands joined to salvation, and kind courteous counsel with grace giving credibility.
The verse is a sacred subject supporting bringing people together rather than stirring controversy over disputed matters, calling away from petty strife over unimportant questions, dwelling earnestly on shared truths to carry work forward, with cheerful readiness and the Word as guide in reformation.
Those ministering in word and doctrine are to be reconverted by believing John 13-17 literally and living it before fellow ministers in watchful prayer, in perfect unity and love among different lines as branches of one Vine, daily emptying self and hereditary and cultivated wrong tendencies, depending wholly on Christ, wearing His yoke, learning meekness to control thoughts and words, receiving impress from God alone and daily learning in Christ's school.
Christ joins Himself with believing people and they bind themselves to Him in saving a lost world, their unity making witness shine beyond home and church to the whole world, as messengers one with Him in work and interests revealing Him to secure people for His kingdom bringing glory to Father and Son.
The unity is shown as believers turn from sin, seek the Spirit's grace, act from pure unselfish motives, love God and Redeemer, and show tender regard to help and bless, fulfilled only when thoughts, feelings, words and actions are changed putting away harsh denunciatory judging bruising tearing-down spirit for pity compassion comfort and love especially in families, by converting power, reformation, gathering influence and anointing discerning Christ's value for souls.
Each has a distinct role and the Spirit joins varied efforts into one coordinated work without hindering another because he does not work in one's exact track, esteeming and improving each gift, working under one Head with different talents unselfishly uplifting Christ, feeling need of one another and uniting forces, practiced through counsel and shared purpose without single central control.

Christians represent Christ by maintaining peace among themselves, letting no difference dissension or strife spring up and bear fruit, ceasing all of it, having the mind of Christ open to the Spirit, for strife contradicts witness while unity bears witness God sent Christ to redeem the world.
The unity leaves no place for finding fault, so each should humble the heart and seek removal of every fault within, forbidding criticizing accusing condemning and judging whatever peculiarities of character, refusing darkness over past mistakes, examining self, talking faith, pressing to light, putting away error and correcting evils with united energy without worsening matters.
Answering requires laying aside a naturally combative spirit that refuses to harmonize and wants controversy, working with all power for oneness, learning meekness daily, not dictatorial severe or antagonistic but preaching melting love, being of one mind speaking the same things, talking unity and simple agreed truths not divisions, broadening the mind, giving up independent judgment and doing as one pleases, walking humbly without making oneself conscience for others or closing usefulness.
The oneness requires love, humility and reconciliation rather than criticism jealousy or separation, lived by reconciling wills to God and being joined by holy love, and when believers become one God's love and power flow among them giving evidence the Father sent Christ.
