Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene in the Gardenby emmanuel_higgins

John 20:18

Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

Mary Magdalene came to the disciples announcing that she had seen the risen Lord alive in the garden and had spoken with Him, bearing His message to them. She brought the joyful news that He would ascend to His Father and their Father, to His God and their God, after triumphing over the grave by coming forth from Joseph's new tomb when the stone was rolled back and receiving from the Father acceptance of His sacrifice with authority in heaven and on earth. Though she and the women testified, the disciples did not yet believe He had risen, for their hopes were crushed by His death and their grief and weakened faith led them to dismiss the report as illusion. The weeping women were made His first messengers to spread the good news of the resurrection, with Mary the first to proclaim and preach the risen Saviour after Christ had lifted her from despair and demonic control into close fellowship and service at His feet, in anointing Him, at His cross, and at His tomb. Her telling makes her the example and pattern for women as living missionaries to bring light, love souls, represent Christ, teach and pray for children unto conversion, and serve with voice and pen through letters, tracts, periodicals, and household visits, proclaiming a living Saviour as Head of the church and Good Shepherd whom God's people trust to set entangled things straight.

Mary's Message and Reception

Mary Magdalene came to the disciples reporting that she had seen the risen Lord alive in the garden and had spoken with Him, carrying Jesus' message to them. She brought the joyful news after recognizing Him, that He had told her He would ascend to His Father, who was also their Father, and to His God, who was also their God. She had heard this message from Him herself and then went joyfully to them with what she had seen and heard.

Despite her testimony and that of the women, the disciples did not yet believe that He had risen. Their hopes had been crushed by His death, and they could not yet believe He had risen. Their grief and weakened faith led them to reject the women's testimony as an illusion, so that even her report did not persuade them. They did not readily believe the women's testimony that Jesus had risen and that she had seen Him alive.

Her report belongs to His triumph over the grave. He did not remain long in the grave, nor is He still buried in Joseph's new tomb with the great stone rolled before the door, but He is risen and alive. After the angel rolled back the stone He came forth in triumph, ascended to the Father to receive acceptance of His sacrifice and authority in heaven and on earth, and then returned to reveal Himself to His disciples. It was in this setting that Mary brought word that she had seen the Lord.

First Witness and Example

The weeping women were made His first messengers to spread the good news of the Saviour's resurrection, and Mary Magdalene came to the disciples telling them she had seen the risen Jesus alive and had spoken with Him, the first to proclaim and preach the risen Saviour. Her place came after Christ had lifted her from despair and delivered her from the demons that had controlled her, and she had grown close to Him through fellowship and service, learning at His feet, anointing Him, standing by His cross, and following Him to the tomb.

Her preaching makes her an example showing that women can be living missionaries who bring light to church meetings and bring souls to the light of truth, and that God can work through them. Her telling the disciples that she had seen the Lord gives the pattern for Christian women to love the souls for whom Christ died, to partake of His grace, to represent the truth and the example of Christ, and to bring souls to the light. It is the pattern for teaching in the Sabbath-school with a heart imbued with the love of Christ, for praying with and for children and seeing souls converted, and for serving as missionaries by teaching truth through letters, distributing tracts, soliciting subscribers for periodicals with solemn truth for this time, and conversing with families and praying with mothers and children as instruments of righteousness rendering holy service to God.

The verse presents a living Saviour who did not remain long in the grave and is not still buried in Joseph's new tomb with the great stone rolled before the door, but came forth in triumph after the angel rolled back the stone, ascended to His Father, and then returned to reveal Himself, with Mary bringing word that she had seen the Lord. He is the Head of the church and the Good Shepherd, and this risen, living Christ is to be proclaimed with voice and pen. Meeting Him turned ignorant men into bold teachers giving excellent instruction, and the light given to them is handed down and imparted to all who connect with God, so that when things become entangled and cannot be easily adjusted God's people do not lose heart and courage and faith in doubts and unbelief but trust Him to set things straight.
