Dirt Road Through Golden Wheat FieldsBible World

John 4:35

Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

The fields white already to harvest are people ready now to receive the gospel and be gathered for eternal life, not after a waiting of four months like grain between sowing and reaping. To lift up the eyes is to look beyond self and expected delay to discern that spiritual need beneath the surface, even in places that seem difficult or unpromising. One sows and another reaps, yet both receive wages and rejoice together, with reapers entering into the labors of those who worked before them even unto Pentecost. This was proved when the seed sown in the Samaritan woman sprang up at once and the Samaritans coming from the city believed and confessed the Saviour of the world. Therefore delay is forbidden, and workers must go at once to destitute places near and far, laboring humbly and earnestly to proclaim the last warning while the time is short.

Setting at Jacob's Well

The words belong to the talk at Jacob's well at noontide, after a long morning journey that left Him faint with hunger and thirst, with no rope or water-jar to draw from the deep well. Jew and Samaritan were bitter enemies, so that a Jew would not borrow from a Samaritan nor receive bread or water, and even the disciples would not think to ask a favor of Samaritans or seek to benefit them. Yet He asked the woman for a drink, not offering a kindness that might be rejected but asking a service to awaken trust, seeking with divine love to find the key to this outcast heart.

They were spoken to the disciples after His talk with the Samaritan woman, while they urged Him to eat the food they had brought from buying provisions. He answered them that His nourishment was doing the will of Him who sent Him and finishing His work. While they had been away He had sowed the seed of truth in the woman in preaching to her at the well.

The saying stands among His many invitations of mercy and goodness, cutting away doubt about whether the Lord will hear prayer and have mercy and give favor. Its teaching is positive with no guess, spoken as one having authority, with voice and words and articulation in perfect harmony with its subject. He drew the lesson from the grain fields before Him, where sowers cast seed and reapers harvest the early grain, so the scene supplied natural images that made the teaching memorable. The natural grain harvest was still four months away, which is the usual interval between sowing and harvest.

Meaning of White Fields

The white fields are people already ready to receive the gospel, and the harvest is souls gathered to eternal life. To lift up the eyes is to recognize that present readiness and to enter the work at once instead of saying there are yet four months. At Sychar this was proved when the word spoken to the Samaritan woman quickly bore fruit and the Samaritans themselves became the ripe field. Sowing and reaping in such a harvest can be shared, with both workers rejoicing together over fruit gathered for eternal life. The same urgency reaches thousands close at hand in America who are perishing in ignorance and sin and must not be neglected for distant fields. At Newcastle prior distribution of books with growing interest in the meetings showed such ripeness, calling for work by faith while the opportunity was present.

Lifting up the eyes means looking beyond self, beyond expected delay and familiar congregations, to see beneath the surface and discern spiritual need. It means seeing companies ready to hear, even sheep without a shepherd stretching out hands and crying for help and asking what they must do to be saved. The disciples expected the harvest later, but the woman’s witness bringing her countrymen to Jesus was already the harvest from the seed of His words. Therefore workers are to press without delay into fields where little or no work has been done, to enlighten the people and gather fruit unto eternal life. Doing the will of God and finishing His work in this sense means hearing His call and sending Bible workers at once into new districts with money and facilities to reap. It also means bringing people the Word of God where they are and letting no human agent stand between them and Christ.

Readiness can be present even in fields that seem difficult, neglected, unpromising, or without outward sign of success, and even when workers do not yet recognize it. The disciples saw a discouraging prospect, yet Christ urged careful looking because some would reject while others hungered, accepted, and carried truth to others under the Holy Spirit’s impression. Samaria appeared unpromising but was already ripe, the woman immediately sharing what she had received and many believing, then many more believing from hearing Him themselves. That swift fruit taught that reapers may enter the labors of prophets, teachers, and John the Baptist who prepared minds by sowing, and take courage from its unexpected speed. The experience there would be repeated in later times, and genuine Christians are not merely to notice need but to reap and gather to eternal life. The same applies to the long-neglected Southern field, which needs simple repeated religious instruction offered with divine love rather than being passed by as less promising.

The ready fields are thirsting souls perishing in ignorance and hungry for light, like sheep without a shepherd stretching out hands and crying for help and the bread of life. Calls for help come from every direction from people everywhere who need to be enlightened, and those who have received grace must impart what they have received and minister gladly. By such immediate reaping immortal crowns are won and the kingdom of heaven is gained, though the work is too great for the few laborers and requires tact and skill. The whiteness appears in companies in the most destitute spiritual condition eagerly searching the Scriptures, praying together, and waiting as a camp meeting gathered in regions beyond to hear truth and be fed from the Word. Across the world it includes people in many churches who have followed the light they received yet have not met the testing truths for the last days with conviction, who hunger to know more of God, are near the kingdom, and by prayer and search for light, grace, and the Holy Spirit call for service.

Those who have never had great light may be more susceptible than those who have often heard and resisted. When those who have heard many times shut their hearts and are passed by, and when the wise and prudent miss His working, truth hidden from them is revealed to babes who respond. The joy is like Christ’s joy when truth found place in the Samaritan woman, whose true nourishment was doing the will of Him who sent Him and finishing His work by saving souls. Even the most unlikely hungry souls will receive truth and become its heralds, while those with light excuse themselves and resist and those outside come and listen.

In the very close of earth’s history the field is a world infatuated, deceived, and perishing in sin. With the end near, signs rapidly fulfilling, life uncertain through sudden disaster and death, and little time remaining, the harvest must be gathered now. God’s people are to see this ripeness and urgency, move cautiously understanding what the will of the Lord is, and, imbued with His Spirit, proclaim the warning message in work that will mean much to His cause. This calls for volunteers at once under God’s direction, qualifying by consecration and earnest study of the Scriptures, laboring in sincerity and humility to gain fuller experience, better knowledge of truth, and skill to reach souls just where help is needed and rescue them from ruin. Workmen are needed now because laborers are few while many who could work are asleep to the wants of the cause and unwilling to bear burdens. Hearts wholly given to God to meet the Lord in peace at His coming will work at once from house to house and wherever possible for the salvation of others, advancing the third angel’s message as light shines in clear rays in distant lands and honest hearts accept present truth.

Sowers and Reapers Together

Those who reap receive wages and gather fruit unto eternal life, winning immortal crowns and the kingdom, while sower and reaper rejoice together over souls saved. The harvest is not four months future but already white and ready, calling for lifting up the eyes to see it and entering the work at once without delay. Among the Samaritans the spiritual harvest was ready immediately, for the seed planted in the woman quickly bore fruit as she told others and they came, proving people ready to receive truth and a timely opportunity to gather them to eternal life. To lift up the eyes and look is to see needy fields close around with companies like sheep without a shepherd stretching out hands crying for help and asking what they must do to be saved, rather than focusing on distant fields while urgent needs close at hand go unmet. Doing the will of God and finishing His work means hearing that call and sending Bible workers at once into new districts with money and facilities to reap.

One sows and another reaps, and later workers enter into the labors of those who worked before them. The disciples could reap where prophets, teachers, and John the Baptist had prepared minds by sowing, and the swift Samaritan response, even with no outward sign of success visible beforehand, was to give them courage from its unexpected speed. The sowing before them reached back to patriarchs, prophets, and holy men and to God's ancient chosen people enriched with precious truth, with Christ Himself as their invisible leader through the wilderness travels and as the water of life to Abel, Seth, Enoch, Noah and all who received His instruction. So the Pentecost harvest would not be the result of their own labor alone, for one sowed and another reaped and sower and reaper rejoice together. The world is the field and the harvest is people ready to receive the gospel, to be carried beyond those who already know it to those perishing in sin in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.

The saying looked forward to the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit would descend on the disciples for reaping and thousands would be converted in a day. This applies to Christ's sending of the twelve and later the seventy to towns and villages to preach the kingdom of God, putting them to work to gather souls ripe without delay. Peter carried that same commission forward in his Pentecost preaching when three thousand souls were added. Many had been convicted by Christ's words but did not openly acknowledge faith until after His resurrection and ascension, when the Spirit was given.

Samaritan Harvest Gathered

Unlike the natural sowing where the husbandman must wait months for grain to germinate and develop, lightened only by hope of future returns, the seed of truth sown in the mind of the Samaritan woman sprang up and bore fruit almost at once. Scarcely were the words spoken before the seed awakened her understanding to know she had been talking with the Lord Jesus Christ, causing her to let divine light shine into her heart, forget her waterpot or pitcher, and hasten to tell her Samaritan brethren. The usual four months between sowing and harvest do not describe the timing of this spiritual work, for the people were already ready to hear and believe and the disciples were told to recognize these receptive people as a harvest field of souls to be gathered to eternal life. God had prepared these souls for conversion, and the call to look beyond the usual delay means going to work at once among people who lack spiritual knowledge rather than remaining focused only on familiar congregations and churches.

Their at-once coming out of the city proved the ripeness, and the two busy days tarrying with them gathered many more who believed because of His own word that He is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. Many Samaritans first believed because of the woman's testimony, and many more believed because of His own word and confessed Him as the Christ, the Saviour of the world, the speedy harvest after the sowing coming because the Holy Spirit impressed the truth upon Samaritan hearts. Some came at first from curiosity and then believed on Him and drank the water of life He gives, and their hunger to hear led Him to stay with them for two days. Those who receive truth can in turn share it with others, and sower and reaper share in the joy of gathering people to eternal life.

The disciples saw a discouraging prospect and expected the harvest later, failing to see and recognize the spiritual opportunity already before them in Samaria. The woman believed His word without seeing miracles, then shared the light with her neighbors and they received it, and by immediate witness she brought a whole city to hear Jesus. She proved more effective in gathering this harvest than the disciples, who had not recognized it, showing that workers must look carefully at the fields before them including fields they may consider difficult. Some people will reject the truth while others hunger for it, accept it, and carry it to others.

The work was Christianity among the poor, despised Samaritans, whom many considered unworthy of salvation yet who were hungering for its light and ready to receive the message and be gathered into God's garner and kingdom. After love and mercy were shown them they welcomed His messengers, and the disciples later gathered a precious harvest among people who had once been bitter enemies of the followers of Christ. That preaching at Sychar helped the disciples see that the gospel was for all people without prejudice of nation or people and without territorial or social barriers, for His love and grace were not limited by race or nation and did not share Jewish intolerance.

Christ's Barrier Breaking Example

Though a Jew, He set at naught Pharisaic custom and Jewish prejudice against the despised Samaritans, mingling freely with them instead of thrusting their wrongs upon them or refusing them benefit. The field declared ready in John 4:35 was made ready by that breaking down of barriers, for He crossed the customs that separated the peoples in order to reach a harvest among those whom prejudice had shut out. He accepted their hospitality, slept under their roofs, and ate with them at their tables, partaking of food prepared and served by their hands, and He taught in their streets. He treated them with the utmost kindness and courtesy, drawing their hearts by human sympathy and bringing them by divine grace the salvation the Jews rejected. His words fell upon their thirsty souls with blessed, life-giving power, awakening new impulses and opening to these outcasts of society the possibility of a new life.

Urgent Call to Labor

Saying there are yet four months is wrong, for the harvest fields are already white and ready, so new fields must be opened at once, workers must be added, and young men must be educated to labor without delay, with urgent repeated training for immediate harvest work. Lifting up the eyes means seeing the fields of people in the large cities and the great vineyard of cities and suburbs needing cultivation as ready now to be gathered unto eternal life, as Jesus saw what might be accomplished by intelligent effort, with people asking for the preaching. Staying content where the work is already established is forbidden; when doors are opened, as in Mexico, entering at once is in God's order, sowing the seeds of truth in faith to bring a harvest and being prepared to improve the opportunity. The advance is from city to city without stopping to build up great interests, creating centers only when essential and working outward from them, building for time and eternity because the Lord is coming, and all who desire are welcomed into this harvest field where reaping receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life so sower and reaper rejoice together. Humble believing youth with God's Word abiding in them can both sow and at the same time see fields ripe, and God will crown their efforts, while turning away from this work for business that brings only money is folly, and the sadness is having few laborers when long-time church members should feel a burden for souls and continue the work so a harvest is gathered.

The white fields were the Samaritans coming out of the city to Christ after the woman left her waterpot and told them about Him, proving God had prepared souls close by who are ready and perishing for lack of knowledge, so the usual four months between sowing and harvest does not apply and work must begin at once. The field is the world to be saved as far as men and women will yield to the claims of truth, including regions where truth has not penetrated and souls in spiritual blindness, prejudiced by misrepresentation and left unwarned, so seeds of truth must be sown in new fields and in locality after locality in the Lord's world vineyard. Ministers must go to active outreach among people who lack spiritual knowledge rather than hovering over the churches, remaining among those who already know the truth, staying at ease while traveling visiting churches, or spending resources on work that absorbs effort but produces little where comparatively few will accept. They must receive the spirit of the message to lift up the head, look on destitute unwarned places, yearn after souls and not let go until converted, for until this spirit takes hold of every man and every conference the work cannot go forward in power, and neglect creates responsibility that will be charged against individuals, organizations, and churches when every man is judged according to deeds done in the body.

The ready field means a great work to be done in both sowing and reaping for which means and workers are short, for the harvest is great and laborers are few, with people perishing and needing help and salvation, moved by the Spirit and drawn to Christ, many preparing for harvest without knowing it. Harvesting souls requires tact and skill, diligence and faith, using talents and energy to help people gain heaven, with daily lifting of the heart to God and lifting of the eyes to see the field, and with organized effort in every church and responsibility of every believer to take part rather than wait or be forced into service. Reapers must act now with meekness, consecration, Scripture study, prayer, fasting, justice, and love, putting away self-sufficiency and idols, working humbly, earnestly, and courteously, making room for God's work and supporting it with generosity rather than letting selfishness, pride, covetousness, extravagance, or love of display obstruct its advance. The following verses explain that reapers gather fruit for eternal life and share joy with those who sowed, because they continue work made possible by others' labor.

Unworked places in this country and far-off lands are pleading for help with workers waiting to go but held back because the treasury lacks sufficient means to send them, so God's people are to bring every dollar they can spare to His treasury so workers in needy fields will not call in vain, for worldliness and selfishness that withholds means puts eternal life in danger and calls watchmen to awake. The whitening harvest-field is a call to go forward in faith rather than wait for a later season or sufficient funds, trusting God will be with the workers, and persevering effort brings success, opens new fields, and brings many souls to a knowledge of the truth. Means must be shared unselfishly, including money held in banks given to establish and sustain institutions in destitute fields as practical supreme love for God and love for neighbor, with buildings plain and economical, needless expense and ornament or display denied even a little, and resources not centralized or tied up in investments or ambitious projects. The whitening harvest calls volunteers for neglected places where people need the truth.

Reaping is done by locating in places and working from centers as from Takoma Park for the country for miles and miles around Washington, which is specially prepared and waiting to be occupied with ample room for school and sanitarium without crowding, plus printing office and meetinghouse, a high hope were Christ upon the ground declaring people and territory ready to be gathered. The people there and in surrounding country are to be taught the truth step by step, led onward line upon line and precept upon precept, taught patiently in love and faith and hope and courage until truth is applied by the Spirit's power to heart and conscience. The same readiness calls for holding tent and open-air meetings and giving Bible readings, distributing publications, canvassing modestly without controversy with many workers going out to gather people for eternal life, and sending Bible workers into new districts. Christ accompanies and strengthens those who study His Word and obey His commands and go out to work rather than wait for someone to direct them, to share the Saviour's love and the message of His soon return, and when workers follow right methods energetically a harvest of souls will be gathered.

The white harvest fields are unbelievers to be gained as sheaves to present to Christ, souls to be gathered for the Master now through active, earnest, practical Christian service, and anything less gives the lie to profession of faith. Gathering requires church members to take part with the minister in presenting the faith, not to stand back as if they have no interest and leave all the burden on him, for even the ablest preaching of exactly the message people need gains no souls when members withhold help, and their standing back hinders success. Every believer must be a producer as well as a consumer, using every ability to share salvation personally, with laymen and youth and church members laboring, which leaves no time for criticizing and revives the giver, and only praying, humble, believing Christians whose actions show their greatest desire is to make known the saving truth that will test all people will make an impression on those dead in trespasses and sins and gather a rich harvest. Christ's work has no territorial boundaries, and those who share His mind recognize opportunities to serve beyond interests already in their care rather than refusing support for other parts of the work, including neglected communities in the American South and cities across the country where volunteers are needed to teach, preach, and bring the truth.

Fields Ready Worldwide

Nearby neglected cities, suburbs, towns, villages and unwarned American cities are already white for harvest, and home missions close at hand can be as ripe as distant lands and must not be passed by for far fields. Thousands in America are perishing in ignorance and sin, including people of many languages in the cities and many foreigners who have not heard the message and are prepared to receive it, and they must be reached now rather than delayed on the assumption a later time will be better. Giving to foreign missions does not complete duty while urgent needs close at hand go unmet, for the harvest is the gathering of people to eternal life and those who reap receive fruit for eternal life and rejoice with those who sow, entering into labor begun by others. Workers must look at the fields before them and begin gathering instead of waiting, looking beyond familiar or already-worked fields to neglected places where spiritual need is a call to begin.

The long-neglected Southern field and the colored people are a harvest ready for sowing and reaping, and every genuine Christian is to look for people ready to receive truth even in fields that seem difficult, neglected, unpromising or unrecognized. Its people hunger for words of light and salvation and need simple, repeated religious instruction offered with the love of God, and those who receive the truth can in turn sow it. The field must not be delayed over or passed by for easier work while time remains, but entered now to teach truth and share sowing, reaping and gathering, with missionaries willing to give up comforts and use their skills to serve. That labor needs colored workers prepared to labor for their own people, funds to support and sustain workers, and cautious humble labor, and those who help bring people to Christ share in the joy and reward of gathering fruit for eternal life where sowers and reapers rejoice together.

The country for miles and miles around Washington is white already to harvest and specially prepared and waiting to be occupied, to be worked from Takoma Park with ample room for a school and a sanitarium without crowding, plus a printing office near the post office and a site for a meetinghouse. Were Christ upon the ground there He would declare the people and territory ready to be gathered, and His present call is to lift up the eyes, look on those fields, see their readiness and press forward as speedily as possible in response to favoring providences. The harvest is precious souls already ready to be gathered now by leading them onward step by step, teaching line upon line and precept upon precept in love and faith and hope and courage until truth is applied by the Spirit's power to heart and conscience.

Southern California is a present ready field in invalids drawn to health resorts and their attendants, and the present opportunity to reach people seeking health must not be postponed for four months but acted on now. The call is for immediate medical missionary work on sensible, rational lines, to establish sanitariums in many places in the country and purchase suitable properties with buildings in Southern California for sanitarium work, with earnest Christlike effort. Jesus saw what intelligent effort could accomplish and declared souls ready to be gathered unto eternal life now, calling for more laborers who can both sow and reap, and those long in the truth should feel a burden to continue the work when an evangelist leaves and gather a harvest in Los Angeles and surrounding cities. He that reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life so that both he that sows and he that reaps rejoice together, for one sows and another reaps and those sent to reap enter into the labors of others who labored before them.

Australia and Australasia are ripe, verified beyond conception, with eager crowds, widespread interest and sheaves already gathering, yet crippled for lack of workers, means and facilities. Around Cooranbong, Newcastle and Maitland and settlements between, where truth had not yet been proclaimed, prior book distribution and growing interest showed people ready to hear and respond, earnestly seeking light and help like sheep without a shepherd, calling for work by faith without delay to gather fruit for eternal life where sowers and reapers share joy. In Sydney, Brisbane, Queensland, Melbourne suburbs, Parramatta and New Zealand, people were asking for preaching to be brought to them, and the great harvest with few laborers must be gathered at once with no delay for a future season by many more workers entering cities and suburbs with tent meetings and Bible readings.

Europe, England, Sweden, Nimes, Lausanne and other foreign destitute fields where the standard was never lifted are ripe and must be entered without delay, for people are eager for truth, longing for spiritual food and help to understand Scripture, and waiting for light. The call is to look beyond immediate surroundings and labor in neglected fields including other countries and among other nations and language groups, with missionaries, books and preachers sent, workers and resources shared unselfishly, and the gospel message given throughout the world till the earth is lightened. Laborers have been kept back and precious opportunities lost through apathy, leaving fields without facilities while time and means are sunk in ambitious projects for a class that will scarcely honor God, which misappropriates entrusted money and hinders the vineyard as a whole, so there must be waking, prayer for pardon, zeal, fervor and energy in cooperation with missionaries to save souls ready to perish. England needs years of persevering labor while Australia can advance now, and both home and foreign work must push on, with Christians looking around and entering the work wherever needed nearby or far away instead of waiting for an easy opportunity.

The ripe harvest includes thousands of places that have not yet heard the message of Christ's soon coming, and young men who have not yet given the message are to go at once and proclaim it where it has not been heard, giving the last call to the gospel feast and the last invitation to the marriage supper of the Lamb. The time to gather souls in Cleveland had already come and the work in Ohio should not be delayed, but devotion, energy, interest and means directed toward the work appointed there including preparing a place where people who accept truth can be gathered. The field near Hildebran School is ready and should be worked with greatest earnestness, and home missions nearby rather than only foreign lands need a missionary spirit and more workers encouraged by conferences. The call extends to Nashville colleges, New York with Utica and Buffalo, California and Parramatta, including wealthy, capable, educated and higher-class people as large sound fruit to be visited personally and led to investigate, as well as people of every rank and the regions beyond, and looking toward distant fields and laboring personally and supporting workers in foreign fields brings abundant grace so the spiritually poor through unbelief become rich in good works and souls are revived by the Word.

The whitening field is the call to proclaim the last warning, the third angel's message and Christ's soon coming, from city to city without building great interests, with ministers and lay members going out now while time is short to warn, call to repent and prepare for His return, and win souls who will devote their lives to Christ. Believers should go where truth has not been proclaimed and sow and reap for Christ, each doing the work given wherever there is opportunity without delay or restriction by human plans or barriers, which sets heavenly agencies to prepare the way for sowers and reapers and leaves no time for criticizing or finding fault. A place where workers have all they can do in visiting is a field white for harvest and creates duty to stay and do all that can be done to make the work a success, not leaving for another place unless the Lord clearly specifies it duty to go. Seeing the ripe harvest gives heavenly certainty to show the world, with light from heaven shining around to repel presumptuous sophistries, feeding the flock with manna supplied by His own hand, putting away fanciful theories, letting truth stand in original power after the pattern of things in the heavens, and trusting God's guardianship while His church though enfeebled and defective yet the object of His supreme regard is taught with growing capability as the indwelling life expands.
