John 5:26

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

As the Father has life in himself, so He has given the Son to have life in himself. That life in Christ is original, unborrowed and underived, and He is its fountain, while every created being receives life only as a dependent streamlet from Him. With that life He has power, as the Father has, to raise the dead and give life and immortality to whom He will, as Author of the resurrection who holds the keys of death. With that life is given authority to execute judgment because He is the Son of man, at once Advocate and Judge who understands human frailty and judges with wisdom, justice and grace. Those who hear His word and believe pass from death to life now, raised from death in trespasses and sins to spiritual life, and all in the graves will hear His voice and come forth, they that have done good unto the resurrection of life.

Words and Setting

As the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son to have life in himself. The life and authority of the Son are thus given by the Father, and with that gift comes authority to give life, to raise the dead, and to execute judgment because he is the Son of man. Those who hear his word and believe the Father who sent him pass from death to life, and the dead will be raised to life or to condemnation. He is one with the Creator, gives light and life to all, and judges each person according to the light received.

That life and power to raise the dead are his own, yet his work remains in perfect unity with the Father and is never independent of the Father's will. Whatever things the Father does, the Son does in like manner by like power and with like results, sharing the Father's power to raise the dead. His works therefore carry the same power and the same results as the Father's.

This declares his real nobility as the Son of God, equal with the Creator of the universe, honored of the angels, risen above humanity and free from sin and shame. He possesses divine life and stands equal with the Creator, so his life and authority are not merely human. He is divine in person, not merely a source of life through his doctrine, and is invested with power to give life to all creatures. He retains his divine nature while united with human nature, and as the Son of man he also has authority to execute judgment.

In him that life is original, unborrowed, and underived, and he is its fountain, spring, and source. He alone has immortality, while all created things are dependent recipients who must be replenished from him. Human life is only a streamlet from that fountain, something received from the Giver and taken back again by him. The life of the Father and the life of Christ are one, for Christ lives by the Father. As the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father he declares him, making Christ the head of every man as God is the head of Christ.

The saying belongs to his teaching about life and resurrection after healing the man at the pool of Bethesda and being accused of breaking the Sabbath. There it is given as nourishment from the heavenly Physician, where knowing the light is not enough unless it is received and shared with others.

Resurrection Life and Judgment

The life given to the Son carries power in himself, like the Father, to raise the dead and to give life and immortality to whomever he wills. He is the author of the resurrection, holding the keys of death, conquering the grave, and restoring the life lost through sin. That power to raise the dead is his own, yet exercised in perfect unity with the Father and never independent of the Father's will.

All in the graves will hear his voice and come forth, they that have done good unto the resurrection of life and they that have done evil unto the resurrection of damnation. The precious dead from Abel down to the last saint who dies will live again, and at his coming on the great white cloud the voice of the Son of God calls forth the sleeping saints and they are clothed with glorious immortality. His raising of Lazarus points to the resurrection of all the righteous, and his own resurrection establishes that all who believe will be raised. Without this resurrection of the dead the Scriptures would be of no avail. In the resurrection God will be their God and they shall be his people in a close and tender relationship, in accordance with the divine plan.

The same life raises those dead in trespasses and sins to spiritual life now. Christ has in himself original life-giving power to rouse hearts palsied by transgression by the work of the Holy Spirit, to awake the sleeper and bring him from death, to restore vast powers and capabilities for good for the upbuilding of God's kingdom, and to create new tastes and new motives. To arouse the spiritually dead and convert the sinner from the error of his ways is giving life to the dead and requires as great an outlay of power as to raise one from physical death, and he is able to do it and will accomplish what he pledged in destroying the works of the enemy.

Christ came forth from the grave by the life that was in him, having power to lay down his life and take it again. His rising was therefore no marvel to the heavenly host, for he awakened from death by his own life-giving power and controls the power of death. Deity did not die but humanity died, while the marvel was that he, their beloved Commander, died for rebellious humanity. His resurrection proved his words.

With that life is given authority to execute judgment because he is the Son of man. He is Judge of the Jewish rulers who accused him and Judge of all the world, and all men are responsible to him. The Son is one with the Creator, gives light and life to all, and judges each person according to the light received. As judge he is the one mediator between God and men, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and only through him can anyone enter the kingdom of heaven, with no appeal from his decision. This work of judgment was placed in his hands when he came to earth as Redeemer and took the burden of humanity to save men from the consequences of their sins, making him at once Advocate and Judge. Because he took humanity, tasted the very dregs of human affliction and temptation, gained personal acquaintance by experience with the warfare between good and evil since Adam's fall, and victoriously withstood the temptations of Satan on behalf of man, he understands human frailties and sins and is qualified to pronounce judgment, dealing with men in wisdom, justice, and grace. He is the rent Rock of ages giving sure hiding to every tried, tempted soul.

Receiving and Sharing Life

God sent His Son to represent God in humanity and to communicate God's own life to humanity. Divinity was clothed with humanity so that humanity could be touched and moral power could be brought to man. Christ lives by the Father, and His life and the Father's life are one. As the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, He declares Him.

Those who hear His word and believe the Father who sent Him pass from death to life. Those who receive His words in faith and obey them receive eternal life and become one with Him in spiritual life. By thus receiving, they partake of the divine nature. In this order Christ is the head of every man as God is the head of Christ, so that believers are Christ's and Christ is God's.

This life in Christ is found in Christ and is known through living experience with Him. As the Saviour who died for sinners, He will give His life to every sincere seeker. This gift meets human inability to save self, to wash away even one stain of sin, and to gain freedom from sin, and all who comply with the conditions specified may rely on the promise with confidence in the Word of God when darkness and unbelief press in.

Knowing the light is not enough unless it is received and shared with others. This teaching about life and resurrection is nourishment from the heavenly Physician. Those whose life is hidden with Christ in God will appear with Him in glory when He appears. While in this world they are to give back to God in sanctified service all the capabilities He has given them.
