5:39John 5:39
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Christ commands diligent searching of the Scriptures, which at the time meant the Old Testament foretelling a Saviour to come, rather than casual reading or skimming. The whole Bible testifies of him as the source of eternal life, from creation through him to his promised return, with its histories, precepts, prophecies, types and sacrifices all pointing to him. Eternal life itself is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he sent, and merely possessing or reading the Scriptures does not give life apart from coming to him in faith, receiving his words as food for the soul, and obeying them from the heart. That searching is commanded to every person for themselves, rich and poor, learned and unlearned, with earnest prayerful digging as for hidden treasure, comparing Scripture with Scripture under the Holy Spirit's teaching. The Jewish teachers missed him because pride, love of human honor, and human traditions blinded them to the plain testimony that the Messiah must suffer, die and rise again, though honest study would have shown it.
Verse Setting and Wording
The words belong to the encounter with a helpless impotent man at the pool of Bethesda and the healing performed on the Sabbath, after which the Jews accused him of breaking the Sabbath. They stand as part of his discourse answering that accusation after the healing.
When they were spoken the Old Testament was the only Scripture in existence, so the command plainly refers to the Old Testament revealing a Saviour to come. The books then existing directed people to him and to eternal life, testifying of Christ as clearly as the New Testament does. The Old Testament foretells the coming Saviour and the New Testament records his coming as predicted, and comparing Old Testament prophecy with the New Testament history of his life, death and resurrection gives the strongest proof he is the Messiah and Redeemer. Without the evidence contained in the Old Testament the history of Jesus as Son of God and world's Redeemer cannot be fully demonstrated, for his doctrines, wisdom and purity of character, miracles, and the teachings of the New Testament alone are not sufficient to establish belief. Thoroughly understood, its glorified light from the prophetic past brings out his life and the teachings of the New Testament with clearness and beauty and brings the plan of redemption into clear view, and it must not be thrown aside.
The wording is a command and invitation to search and to think carefully about what is read. Searching means diligent ongoing study to understand the truth rather than casual reading, an occasional glance, or merely reading quickly. It means studying carefully and prayerfully rather than skimming, or repeating words without knowing their meaning. It means learning both facts and the spiritual truths they teach and seeking the full significance of each passage being studied. Those who lack the love of God and seek human honor can miss its testimony about Christ even while looking for evidence according to their own expectations.
Christ Testified Throughout Scripture
The Scriptures testify of Christ and point to him as the source of eternal life, and they are to be searched in order to find that testimony and understand the truth about him. Searching leads to knowing God and Jesus Christ whom God sent, which is eternal life, and brings acquaintance with the Redeemer in whom eternal life is centered. Close repeated attention to his life as the divine model reveals personal defects and need for change, and by dwelling on him, seeking to imitate him, and exercising persevering faith and love, the student is changed to reflect his character. The command is not merely to read but to search, and searching to learn whether the truth is so benefits the searcher and is rewarded with Christ's favor as light revealed in his Word is followed. Those who have received much light yet neglect the Bible and fail to come to him who gives life must wake from spiritual sleep, keep lamps burning, and seek God in Scripture and prayer.
The whole Bible is a manifestation of Christ, from creation made through him to his works and voice throughout to his promised return for those who love and wait for him, and every ray of light points to him. The whole Bible tells of Christ, recording his works and conveying his voice, and studying it brings a person to know the Saviour. His life-giving word is the source of spiritual power and life, sustaining spiritual life as food sustains physical life, and each person must receive it personally into action and character to gain strength, perfect experience, and lasting joy. The Scriptures reveal that he will soon come for those who love him and wait for his appearing, while warning that those absorbed in making money and seeking pleasure will face his rejection. They give the positive description of Jesus in whom hopes of eternal life are centered as author and finisher of faith, and studied as a lesson book and obeyed they keep every person from being lost.
The Old Testament foretells the coming Saviour and the New Testament records his coming as predicted, and comparing Old Testament prophecy with New Testament history of his life, death and resurrection gives the strongest proof he is the Messiah and Redeemer and brings the plan of redemption into clear view. When the words were spoken the Old Testament was the only Scripture in existence, so the command plainly refers to the Old Testament revealing a Saviour to come, while the New Testament records the Saviour's coming as the prophets predicted. Christ is revealed in the Old Testament as clearly as in the New, and the history of his life, death and resurrection as Son of God and world's Redeemer cannot be fully demonstrated without Old Testament evidence, since doctrines he taught, wisdom and purity of character, miracles performed, and New Testament teachings alone are insufficient to establish belief. The Old Testament must be thoroughly understood to appreciate the plan of redemption, and its glorified light from the prophetic past brings out the life of Christ and New Testament teachings with clearness and beauty. Christ opened the Scriptures so people could understand them, those who followed him became familiar with the Old Testament and found nourishment and strength to obey, and he used Scripture to establish the certainty and necessity of his suffering, death and resurrection and to show its true meaning. Scripture includes the whole treasure of revelation in whatever form given, and its history, biography, songs, prayers and prophecies are all inspired by God and useful for teaching, correction and instruction in righteousness.
The Old and New Testaments are inseparable and shed light on one another, linking prophecy and fulfillment; rejecting the Old Testament rejects Christ's testimony and the New and weakens true gospel teaching. Rejecting the Old Testament Scriptures that testify of Christ therefore rejects Christ's testimony, and both Testaments together reveal God's glory in Christ. The Old Testament throughout its history, precepts and prophecies testifies of Christ, with the divinely appointed system of Judaism foreshadowing the gospel and its promises, sacrifices, incense, jubilees, sanctuary, types and shadows all pointing to the Redeemer as Saviour. Merely possessing or outwardly knowing the Scriptures while thinking knowledge itself gives life is not enough, for to reject Christ to whom they bear witness is to reject the word of God. The acts of the old dispensation that turned people from sin or brought forgiveness were done with reference to the Saviour who was to come, who is the steppingstone by which humanity is exalted and the only hope of salvation. Careful study beginning at Moses and the prophets of types and shadows and prophecies concerning his mission would easily identify Jesus as the promised Messiah.
The Scriptures testify that the Messiah had to suffer and then enter his glory, including his rejection, humiliation, death and resurrection including rising on the third day, with details of his ministry fulfilled in him. Understanding these prophecies would have helped the disciples recognize the risen Jesus and kept faith and hope from failing, and their hopes would not have been buried with Jesus if they had grasped that the prophecies spoke of a suffering Saviour. Diligent honest study would have shown this evidence, for the prophecies concerning his rejection as Messiah, humiliation, death and resurrection were fulfilled in him, including rising on the third day. The Scriptures are to be studied and brought into daily life and into the fifth and sixth chapters of John containing the mystery of godliness, giving discernment to distinguish truth from falsehood in perilous times. Scripture sets forth Christ as the divine object of faith, presenting his infinitely perfect character, the object of his mission, his sufferings, the humility of his human-divine character, his obedience to the law, his veiling of glory under humanity to reach the cross as antitype of type, and the inexhaustible mysteries of redemption including his incarnation and atonement which infinity alone can fully declare. The life of Christ is to be carefully meditated upon and constantly studied with desire to understand why he had to come, and only by such searching can right conclusions be formed, revealing obedience in contrast with disobedience as seen in Christ's obedience set against Adam's disobedience and through which many are made righteous.
The knowledge to be obtained of him is inexhaustible, embracing mysteries which the most gifted could study until the judgment and until Christ is revealed in the clouds in power and great glory yet still fall far short of reality, and no human account can fully represent him. To question his words increases self-estimation and decreases conceptions of Christ and God, while to search rightly leads to understanding his character and practicing his virtues, for failing to understand his character and work as Redeemer leaves his virtues unpracticed. Every true doctrine centers on him and every precept receives force from his work, with his humiliation concealing deity, obedience to the law, and death on the cross as antitype of type linking Old and New Testaments together. The testimony gives the cross of Calvary its central place, gives the positive description of Jesus in whom hopes of eternal life center as author and finisher of faith, and studied as a lesson book and obeyed it keeps from being lost and leads to salvation. Its teachings point to him whom prophetic writings describe and in whom hope of eternal life is centered, and the verse is reason to examine Scripture and know the grounds of faith. Altering or rejecting its vital parts to suit corrupt desires leads away from Christ to ruin, pointing away from heaven rather than pointing the way to it.
Eternal Life Through Christ
Eternal life in the verse is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom God sent, and that knowledge is gained by searching the Scriptures which testify of Christ. The search is done with the aid of the Holy Spirit, through whose agency God moves upon the heart and gives light and understanding to those who receive the love of the truth. That light directs people to look to Christ rather than to fellow humans as pattern and finisher of faith, and no one is to entrust the soul to another person's interpretation instead of studying for themselves. The Bible was given not for ministers only but for all people, rich and poor, learned and uneducated, as the book for the people and the comfort of the poor, and the Bible and the soul were made for each other. To the one who receives it, the Word is a light shining in a dark place pointing out the path so plainly that the wayfaring person though a fool need not err, for the entrance of God's words gives light and understanding to the simple. Diligent study opens new treasures of truth as bright jewels to the mind, a single text diligently searched becomes a savor of life unto life and dispels the clouds of error to reveal God's will, and the sincere poor and uneducated who earnestly desire to know God's will will not be left in darkness but may reap greater consolation than the learned. If the Bible could not be understood by every class, the mission to preach the gospel to the poor would be useless and the command to search would be inconsistent and without profit, and therefore it must be read and studied diligently and with interest and put first, not made secondary to authors with only confused ideas of religion, because it is wisdom unto salvation competent to educate for usefulness in this life and for the eternal life, including instruction in truth for the last days about things coming upon the world.
Merely possessing, reading, or searching the Scriptures does not give life apart from coming to Christ in faith. The Jewish rulers searched thinking that knowledge of the Scriptures itself gave life, yet they rejected the One to whom the Scriptures bore witness, looking for evidence of His appearing according to their own mistaken expectations even as He stood among them. Their lack of faith and love of God, seeking human honor and trusting rabbis' traditions and misinterpretations instead of understanding by God's Spirit, kept them from recognizing Him. A theoretical knowledge of the Word without receiving Christ as personal Saviour leaves a person a stranger to its power to sanctify heart and character, and otherwise they would perish. To reject Christ whom God sent is to reject the word of God, for the Old Testament testifies of Him throughout its history, precepts and prophecies, and the divinely appointed system of Judaism with its promises, sacrifices, incense, jubilees and sanctuary foreshadowed the gospel and pointed to the Redeemer. The verse is therefore a warning to those who have received much light but neglect the Bible and fail to act on its testimony, calling them to wake from spiritual sleep, keep lamps burning, and seek God in Scripture and prayer, studying carefully and prayerfully rather than skimming lest its testimony be missed.
The verse requires assimilating the gospel as food for the soul, continually receiving Christ's words which are spirit and life as eating His flesh and drinking His blood. Its teachings must be believed and practiced and its vital principles brought into the life with its precepts obeyed, so that character is transformed and the whole being refined and purified. Its principles taken in as spiritual food and formed into character enable receiving God's counsel and obeying what He commands, and bring comfort, hope and encouragement as the Saviour is revealed as a present help in every time of need. If received in this way it gives eternal life, but though the Word is diligently read and searched, failure to live its principles and obey it makes it a savor of death instead of a savor of life.
Obedience to the Word is life, even eternal life, not make-believe, and it is right to expect eternal life through God's Word on that ground. Studying and believing the Word and obeying its requirements from the heart provide safety and teach how holiness is attained. Eternal life means receiving the living elements of Scripture and doing God's will, partaking of heaven's bread which gives spiritual strength, while the Holy Spirit enables sincere searchers to discover truth, impresses it freshly on the mind, and brings joy, peace and a deeper sense of its preciousness as God speaks through the Word making it spirit and life. Its preciousness is known only by obeying its instructions, for mere assent to the truthfulness of God's word is not enough, but it is to be received as the oracle of God as truly a divine communication as if its words came in an audible voice. Studying the Word teaches the conditions of salvation, and entering God's city requires full obedience to it.
The Scriptures contain the way to eternal life and point the way to heaven as a guide to a higher holier life. Searching them belongs with seeking to obey God's Word, and neglecting that study and that guide leaves a person ignorant of what should be known, without an experienced knowledge of God and Jesus Christ, blind to the Creator and regarding obedience as restraint, and unprepared for eternal life and the work of forming Christian character. Education that separates its subjects from the word of truth and from this deeper study fails to give students the knowledge they need of God and the future life.
Scripture reveals human sin and the need for a Saviour, and teaches the path of repentance, contrition, obedience and faith by which people return to God and are reconciled to Him, with true faith in Christ leading to obedience to God's requirements. Searching the Scriptures is among the conditions of choosing the way that leads to eternal life, and those elected to salvation are those who continually have faith, obey God's word and search the Scriptures. Understanding the Word and living by it brings knowledge of God and Christ, and the sixth chapter of John sets out conditions of eternal life.
Receiving Christ the bread of life gives the pledge of eternal life, and searching the pages of Scripture leads to treasures of great value. The Scriptures testify of Jesus and direct people to Him as the source of eternal life, revealing Him and leading to knowledge of God and His love through personal experience. They are to be read with confidence and hope, not discouragement, because their words assure the afflicted that Jesus walks with them as a present help and will preserve, sanctify and bless them. Looking to Jesus for light rather than relying on another person's interpretations or writings brings that assurance and guidance in learning God's will.
Searching Diligently and Personally
The command was spoken not only to Pharisees and scribes and rulers but to the great multitude of common people, and it remains a charge for everyone seeking eternal life through the end of the world, for the Bible was given not for ministers only but for all classes in every place and age, rich and poor, learned and uneducated, old and young, white and colored, as the book for the people and the comfort of the poor man. Since in the Scriptures is found eternal life, which is to know God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, of whom they testify, each person with reasoning faculties must search for themselves with diligent painstaking effort rather than safely trusting the soul to ministers or learned and talented men or another person's interpretation, allowing no one else to think, investigate and pray for them. Had the Jews searched for themselves to test the claim to be the Anointed One, they would not have been misled by priests and rulers into rejecting Him, and if the Bible could not be understood by every class, the mission to preach the gospel to the poor would be useless and the command to search would be inconsistent and without profit. Through the agency of the word and the Holy Spirit God moves upon the heart, giving light and understanding to those who receive the love of the truth, so that to the sincere poor and uneducated who earnestly desire to know God's will the word is as a light shining in a dark place pointing out the path so plainly that the wayfaring man though a fool need not err, the entrance of God's words giving light to the simple, dispelling clouds of error, leading to understand God's revealed will, and opening new treasures of truth as bright jewels, with a single text diligently searched becoming a savor of life unto life and bringing greater consolation than the learned possess.
Searching means more than casual reading or an occasional glance or gaining theoretical knowledge of words, and calls for more than many suppose, requiring diligent, earnest, continual, habitual effort with intense desire proportionate to the value sought, digging for truth as for hidden treasure or as a miner for gold and pearls or looking carefully for something lost, with patience, thought, prayer for the Lord to give light and knowledge and quickened understanding, many tears, humbling the heart, and the Holy Spirit directing those who hunger for righteousness, so each obtains the facts in the soul beyond surface reading unto Christ formed within, the hope of glory, with nothing less than eternal life satisfying. It calls for studying humbly one verse at a time to take in its full significance and true meaning and gathering divine rays of light from the sacred pages, and searching in this way causes light to shine upon other portions so truth long obscured and hidden is plainly revealed, the golden rays found all through the field of revelation gathered together forming the precious gospel to be communicated to others. Difficult passages especially should be studied by comparing Scripture with Scripture and verse with verse with prayer and faith, allowing Scripture to unlock and explain Scripture under the Holy Spirit's teaching, and this gathers truth, reveals harmony among the parts, shows how one passage bears on another, uncovers the riches of Christ and reveals their place in the plan of redemption, bringing a precious reward. This work must not be left to a minister but requires earnest persevering effort, for the Holy Spirit teaches and quickens the understanding so prayerful study brings wisdom and can resolve difficulties, and refusing to investigate with an open teachable spirit repeats the choice of darkness over light.
Searching requires an open, teachable, humble heart susceptible to the Spirit, ever a learner in the school of Christ learning meekness and lowliness, seeking for oneself with thorough earnestness, diligence, thought and sincerity, considering what is read, becoming familiar with the Word and holding it in memory and storing its truths in mind and heart rather than skimming, finding out what the Word itself says instead of bringing traditions handed down and trying to interpret by them, setting aside personal likes and dislikes and theories to seek God's glory and receive the Word gladly without measuring the result. Studied this way with simplicity of heart and profound humility, flashes of light come upon the pages and bright gems are revealed as the voice of God like fire shut up in the bones, making truth feel like most precious riches and creating desire to speak it with sincerity that inspires confidence, bringing things new and old from the treasury with added light even while speaking. Truths thus sought out by comparing passages and stored for future use bring the mind into contact with deep things, establish faith, strengthen against error and evil, equip to bring opposition and questions to Scripture when separated from Christian fellowship, and enable sharing precious truths with those not interested in truth.
Obeying the command requires devoting set time to study with self-examination and prayer even at great inconvenience to temporal arrangements, refusing to use that needed time selfishly for business or pleasure in light of the sacrifice of majesty and glory to become poor and endure humiliation and a painful shameful death to save fallen humanity, since growth in grace, knowledge of the divine will and spiritual strength depend on this duty and languish without it. It means prizing morning hours and leisure moments, taking regular hours for rest, and searching together daily as the bread of life, for heavenly intelligences come very near to every soul who does this, in the Word is learned how to please God, and by earnest watching and praying every intimation of the divine will is known as plainly revealed, opening the way to learn lessons from the natural world also. Time spent studying and praying for the Bread of Life brings spiritual strength and directs attention from temporal wants toward eternal interests, and above all the busy physician should do this, for this searching joined with earnest prayer gives vigor of mind and stability of character and power of endurance to bear taxing burdens. This searching is to be kept up with deep interest, reading and studying the Word and not filling the mind with useless books, magazines and novels that give no light, and it is reflected in the resolve to search day by day as part of lifelong sanctification and growth in Christian character.
Those who search receive understanding and spiritual light, with angels helping to impress and illuminate the mind, and the Holy Spirit enables sincere searchers to discover truth, impresses it freshly with new importance, brings joy and peace and a deeper sense of its preciousness, and makes the Word spirit and life, with Christ's words in language all ages and levels of learning can understand and with the Bible illuminated by Christ the Sun of Righteousness. Searching is a precious life-giving task, not uninteresting, that uncovers inestimable treasures like a mine of precious ore and finds how to become possessors of heavenly riches of mercy and truth and love in abundant supply, revealing more and more gems that feed desire for holiness. Lack of interest comes not because the word lacks spirit and life but because of lack of the Spirit, since spiritual things are spiritually discerned, yet when the heart is brought into harmony new life springs up, new light shines upon every line, and the word becomes God's voice giving direction and power to make the most of present privileges. Many truths hidden like ore and jewels torn from setting and buried under error and human wisdom and tradition are recovered in this way, for Christ restored them and searching recovers them, but it must be joined with asking God for wisdom because truths essential to know lie too deep for unaided research, though divine wisdom is inexhaustible and its understood precepts purify and prepare for membership in the royal family.
Searching joined with much prayer for wisdom according to promise is needed because God's dealings often appear mysterious, His ways are not human ways nor His thoughts human thoughts and are often so contrary to human plans and expectations that people are amazed and confounded, people do not understand their own perverse self-deceiving natures, and while gratifying self and following inclination they flatter themselves they carry out God's mind. Even doctrines already accepted as truth must be tested by Scripture and diligently searched for evidence of faith, and anything that cannot stand that test has no light in it. Such intelligent personal searching keeps from erring on the Sabbath question, and ministers who set aside prejudice and study sincerely willing to receive light will see God's commandments include the Sabbath and become lights amid moral darkness. Scripture must be searched to discover truth and learn what God says, not to defend preconceived beliefs or find grounds for questioning and conflict, and its search calls for humble hearts, prayer for wisdom, willingness to learn and to change views when evidence requires, remaining open to further light, focusing on agreement rather than attacking differences, examining evidence candidly instead of misrepresenting truth, and accepting reproof when cherished opinions are exposed rather than twisting the Word to fit them.
Searching means more than gaining knowledge, for those who search are to walk in received light, heed its message, do what it teaches, and share truth, and practicing truth already known brings increased light so life becomes a living reality with abundant reward and fortifies against erroneous doctrine. The verse commands diligent study and investigating every point of faith, making the Book a constant companion especially on the Sabbath, hearing God speaking with sanctified ears and perceiving hearts, receiving it with reverence, faith and submission as God's revelation with unmistakable proofs, and this is the duty of rational judgment-bound beings with souls to save or lose who seek truth as hidden treasure and depend on God for instruction how to gain the eternal reward, bringing blessing. It means to search, study and pray to become giants in understanding doctrines and practical lessons, facing every difficulty vigorously without ceasing through discouragement, calling will and patience to aid and digging till the gem lies plain and beautiful all the more precious for the difficulty, not dwelling continually on one point but examining another so mystery after mystery unfolds, securing useful knowledge and increased mental power, for the key unlocking one mystery may reveal other gems heretofore undiscovered, requiring thorough understanding of prophecies and other subjects instead of confinement to a few discourses. This searching is wholehearted patient work joined with prayer and action in which Jesus quickens understanding, and the very first duty is to be an earnest student basing knowledge not on others' opinions but on Scriptural truths, meditating and practicing its treasures, a meaning very few realize.
Each person is commanded to search and learn contents and examine for themselves whether things are so instead of depending on others, because the Scriptures are the sure voice of God providing the guide for the heavenward journey, so sincere feelings or confidence in a minister cannot replace knowing what they teach. This personal searching as for hidden treasure gives strength to stand in the day of God and is necessary to understand special points for the present time and to stand in an age of error when false Christs and prophets show signs to delude if possible the elect, with feelings not the guide but the inspired Word profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction, and done with much prayer under love of truth as in Jesus it prepares believing families to close lips against accusation concerning brethren and to speak words imparting courage and strengthening faith which works by love and purifies the soul. People are called to search without resting in limited knowledge, to dig without seizing surface ideas mixed with error, making the Word first above every science and studied under the Spirit with hearts open to light, and through this they are taught by God, learn to love and practice truth, gain enduring knowledge rather than human theories, and receive precious truths out of obscurity with understanding of deep things while ready to accept divine light and walk in holiness. This gives knowledge of relation to Jesus and responsibility as free moral agents, brings greater light for accepting responsibilities and sharing comforting hopeful knowledge, leads to know Christ by experience as sin-bearer in order to point others to Him, makes a channel of light by using abilities to study and share, and enables doing duty rightly, perfecting character, laying treasure in heaven, and continually seeking others.
Searching to learn what is truth is important and must be done now with purpose to practice revealed truth, for accepting found truth may involve a cross but the safe course is to follow given light, neglecting it can turn light to darkness, and without it students catch only a few beams insufficient to show the narrow path and remain in darkness and uncertainty about God's will and service, whereas with it joined with much prayer they receive enough light to walk in the Lord's light and overcome a trivial life of cheapness and folly. Searching must be joined with receiving the Spirit's impression and with understanding the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus as essential to salvation, and its value as God's revealed will testifying of Christ is known only through obeying its instructions, for merely agreeing the Word is true is not enough and it must be searched to discover what it contains, not merely accepted as true. Continual thorough diligent searching is required, including earnest study of prophecy and watching for truth's first rays, seeking clearer and fresh light through prayerful study to share with others and bring God's truth to light.
Why Leaders Missed Christ
Diligent, rightly guided and honest searching of the Scriptures would have shown the Jewish teachers that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah, for the Old Testament stated the details of His ministry and His words fulfilled its prophecies, and in Him the types and shadows of the Jewish economy were being fulfilled. Though they possessed God's word and thought they knew it and thought they had eternal life in it, pride and selfish ambition led them to misinterpret it, to follow human traditions, to rely on priests and rulers, and to imagine a Messiah unlike the humble Jesus, so that they rejected Him and even interpreted God's works of mercy as evidence against Him. Prayerful, right study would have kept them from replacing God's law with human traditions and from being misled into rejecting His claim to be the Anointed One, for searching is meant to lead to recognizing Him rather than resting on inherited creeds or another person's interpretation. Accepting the testimony of Scripture would have required repentance and changed practices, which they were unwilling to yield.
Their reading was blind and hard-hearted, for they looked for evidence of His appearing according to their own expectations even as He stood among them, lacking the love of God and seeking human honor, so that the testimony about Christ was missed. Though assuming to be teachers and expounders of the law and boasting superiority over every other people, they were ignorant of its claims, professing to revere and teach the Scriptures while disbelieving them, keeping its forms and ceremonies while ignoring the great principles of truth foundational to the law. They stood condemned for worldliness, love of praise and power, avarice and want of compassion, and by rejecting Jesus whom God sent and of whom the Scriptures testify they rejected God's Word itself. They professed to believe the Old Testament yet refused its testimony about Christ's life and character because accepting it would require giving up cherished traditions and preconceived opinions and receiving the truth.
The Jews had the word in the Old Testament pointing to Christ, whose author is Jesus Christ the True Witness showing the way to Christ in whom eternal life is revealed, but they had so mingled it with human opinions that its truths were mystified and the will of God to man was covered up. Inherited traditions and human interpretations obscured its spiritual meaning, including the types and symbols of the Jewish religious system, and they refused the testimony concerning Christ's life and character because accepting it would require giving up cherished beliefs and practices. Religious teachers in this age follow their example, for though men now have both Old and New Testaments they twist the Scriptures to evade their truths and teach maxims and traditions of men for the commandments of God as the Pharisees did. Religious leaders had so long presented human ideas and so misrepresented God as a stern judge incapable of compassion, mercy and love that the true paternal character and love of God made known by His Son came as new, to sweep away misrepresentation and restore confidence in God's love.
The Scriptures contain the prophecies fulfilled in His life, works and character, but prejudice and preconceived opinions can blind people to that evidence. Comparing Scripture with Scripture and weighing the evidence in written prophecy against Jesus' life and ministry would have shown the harmony between prophecy and its fulfillment in Him, and the call to search means studying for oneself rather than relying on religious leaders or traditions. Reading biblical words or firmly holding some points of truth is not enough, for the Spirit must work within to convert and transform the heart, and searching must distinguish truth from error by Scripture compared with Scripture. The scribes and Pharisees missed Scripture's central truth and rejected Christ because He did not match their idea of the Messiah, and resisting fresh light turns the light meant to bless into a stumbling block, as with the men of Nazareth.
The command is to search the Scriptures beginning at Moses and the prophets, carefully studying the types and shadows and prophecies concerning Christ's mission which testify of Him and would easily identify Jesus as the promised Messiah. The Jewish priests, rulers and teachers failed to obey it, reading God's Word without understanding, and under the blinding help of Satan and the prince of darkness did not see Jesus as the Messiah but drifted into darkness and unbelief. The voice of Christ speaks through the prophets and patriarchs, and Scripture is harmonious so that passages that seem unclear become plain when diligently studied and compared with other passages on the same subject. The Jews failed because they interpreted the prophecies to fit their own ideas and ambitions, and the disciples likewise misunderstood them through the priests' traditions until Jesus explained that every prophetic detail concerning the Messiah was fulfilled in His life and death.
Scripture Authority and Sufficiency
The command to search was spoken when only the Old Testament existed, so it first pointed to those writings as revealing the coming Saviour. Scripture embraces the whole treasure of divine revelation in whatever form it is given, including history, biography, songs and praise, prayer and prophecy, all inspired by God and profitable for teaching, correction and training in righteousness. Studied and obeyed it is an unerring guide, God's expressed will and perfect standard of character that marks out duty in every circumstance and calls for purity in word, thought and action. It makes every duty plain, gives wisdom and preparation for eternal life, reveals God's character and will and teaches His whole will concerning humanity, ruling life to form character for immortality. God judges every person by His Word, which guides as the pillar of cloud and fire guided Israel and keeps believers steadfast as guide and safeguard in the light He sends.
The written Word tests and decides everything in religious life, including trials on every point, plausible theories without foundation, seducing spirits, and claims to the Spirit's guidance or an inner teacher. What the Word will not vindicate has no light but is guided by another spirit, and those who claim the Spirit must be proved by a Thus saith the Lord. Those who say they no longer need the Bible and follow impressions, feelings and an inward teacher are taught by a false spirit under Satan as leader, not by Christ. True sanctification never leads away from obedience to the sacred commandments and law of God but brings the meekness of Christ. Those who do not search earnestly and seek God in prayer for knowledge of truth and His will will wander from the right path and fall under Satan's deception.
Obeying the command means standing firm in the position defined by the Lord God of Israel, holding fast the beginning of confidence firm to the end and not removing the landmarks established by the Spirit's witness. Its teaching is more dependable than human decisions, eloquent claims, authorities or agents, and Christ directed questioners to the written Word to answer questions and reveal truth. That teaching must be kept distinct from human ideas lest fables be presented as truth, directing people to Jesus rather than to human agents for light and instruction. The Word is the essential source of knowledge whose simplicity keeps people safe from being shaped by worldly learning and erring opinions. Searching rightly means receiving its light rather than relying on human wisdom and prior opinions, approaching with humble honest hearts willing to investigate evidence and accept truth, for refusing that light leaves people walking in darkness.
The Scriptures rather than human traditions or a church's interpretation are the standard by which religious claims and teaching are judged. The written Bible is inspired, unchangeable and sure, the voice of God speaking to the soul and the sure guide to knowing God, while human traditions, the Fathers and commentaries disagree and carry no such authority. Its teaching needs no dim human light and no utterance of priest or minister to save from error, for those who consult it will have light. Christ has made its lessons plain and comprehensible without need of tradition or minister to make them understandable, so everyone whatever their learning or position should read and understand for themselves rather than depend on ministers. Going to the Bible shows what God requires of each person and what is personal duty and His will, and holding the truths of God's Word rather than doctrines of men guards against being misled about duty by human instruction.
Christ repeatedly directed people to the Scriptures to look there for answers instead of answering every perplexing question Himself, replying Have ye not read and What saith the Scriptures. He pointed questioners to the great storehouse of knowledge in His own inspired Word to teach them to make the Word their dependence because He could not always be with them in human form. Searching lets light enter the heart and illuminate the mind, showing what ought to be. It prepares for temptation so the tempted can meet the enemy as He did with It is written, and the enemy has no power over one who relies on the testimony of God's Word. He pointed people to the Scriptures as the authoritative Word of God, to be understood plainly and to serve as the foundation of faith and the end of controversy.
The bidding to search belongs with watching and praying as part of the warning message to get ready for the day of final reckoning. Men live as probationers on trial with a daily record of all actions going to heaven, God testing and proving what characters they build, and angels sent to earth to weigh moral worth. Each person is commanded to search for themselves to understand the fearful solemnity of the present hour and prepare to stand without spot as candidates fit for the seal of God on the forehead. When present truth is preached with power, astonished people who never knew such things were in the Bible see they must search for themselves to find what it holds, a personal work laid on every hearer as never before.
Scripture points to eternal life and must be studied diligently, its truths furnishing people to give a reason for hope and strengthening them to stand firm in conflict, opposition and efforts to restrict conscience. The Word will judge in the last day, and people are accountable for failing to obey its plainly stated duties so that no religious pretension that misleads others excuses disobedience. Searching overcomes unbelief that rejects truth necessary for salvation, encourages the faith that comes by the Word, guards against deception, and enables taking hold of present truth including the now-due message of the third angel, with prayer to God for guidance. Careful earnest searching to understand the basis of faith guards against being drawn toward opposers of God's law. Searching with a teachable heart shows God sanctified the seventh day as Sabbath and calls to obedience, while refusing darkens the mind and risks eternal life.
People must search to learn duty, for while the Bible is open none can be saved in error and no one may be allowed to hinder gaining understanding of truth. The Word is sufficient to show God's commandments must be obeyed even when obedience brings hardship, hunger, opposition, trouble, threat of prison, and what is found must be obeyed at any cost. Excuses for transgressing the law will not withstand judgment, and those professing to love God must search diligently so as not to be found transgressing. The command requires holding fast to the Bible and taking heed how one learns, with parents guarding children, forbidding belief in conflicting reports and claims about teaching until stated directly, and giving certainty that soon all will be fulfilled as a guard against erroneous and deceptive doctrine. The church's refusal to search or listen for fear its works will be reproved is rejection of light, and worldly favor and prosperity do not prove approval.
Searching to know Him whom to know aright is eternal life means beholding Him in the Scriptures in order to obey, continuing as for hidden jewels to be spiritually enriched, meditating on His words to learn what He is personally, and confessing, lifting up and talking of Him to gain faith and zeal as true stewards of grace. This leads beyond casual knowledge to experimental practical knowledge that makes a person like Him and secures calling and election. Searching is among the conditions of choosing the way to eternal life, and those elected to salvation are those who continually have faith, obey God's Word and search the Scriptures.
Transformed Life Through Searching
Searching the Scriptures brings the student to Christ as the divine model in whom all hope of eternal life is centered, and close repeated attention to his life and character exposes personal defects, weakness and lack of goodness and shows the need to surrender all and change. By dwelling on him, studying his character, words, habits, teachings and spotless life, seeking to imitate him and follow his example, and exercising persevering faith and love, the student is changed to reflect his virtues, spirit, principles and character, learning to love God and his truth, to remain firm, and to live by God's principles in helpless dependence on him. Studying Christ's life and lessons in humble trust and living faith brings the teaching of the Holy Spirit, true conversion, recognition of the testimony of Scripture, and walking in received light with sharing of truth to others. It brings parents to know God and Jesus as personal Saviour and equips them to teach children, brings entrance into a sacred relationship with Jesus, beholding his life and character unto partaking of the divine nature and escaping worldly corruption, and enables seeing Christ by faith as personal Saviour with clearer understanding of the Father and the Redeemer. Contemplating Christ in the Word rather than looking to self is the source of true happiness. Earnest searching with the aid of the Holy Spirit uncovers truth, for the Spirit illuminates the Word, impresses it on the mind, makes it spirit and life, and rejects teachings unsupported by Scripture. This brings a fresh sense of the preciousness of truth with peace and joy, heaven's promises, hope and assurance ever fresh and sustaining, strength to overcome, knowledge of how holiness is attained, truth binding the conscience, and safety and spiritual victory through obedience. It leads to unreserved consecration of all one has and is to Christ for winning souls, with the Bible made the man of counsel and continual searching rather than an occasional glance or prayer carrying sure reward. Reading and applying God's promises feeds the soul, while neglect leaves the mind without precious truth, weak and unable to do God's will, like a barren fig tree. Neglect deforms character, blinds understanding, leaves vulnerable to deception, confusion and false teaching, imperils Christian life and leads to neglecting God's claims, whereas those nourished become providers rather than mere consumers, fruitful and able to serve others. Earnest study leads to true knowledge of religion and genuine experience with God guiding life, establishing faith and equipping to understand, explain, bring opposition and questions to Scripture, understand dangers and escape, and give sound reasons for hope and faith unto growth in grace and knowledge of Jesus. Each person must receive the Word personally, as food must be eaten personally to sustain life, taking it into character and action to nourish spiritual life, give strength, perfect experience, bring lasting joy, and bring the Spirit's sanctifying work with faith working through love purifying the soul. The Word must be put first and studied regularly, willingly, diligently and with interest, restricting reading to the Bible and spiritual useful books, not neglected for sciences, temporal concerns, storybooks, fiction, or authors with confused ideas of religion. It is like a mine of precious ore holding mercy, truth and love beyond calculation, revealing connected truths and new beauties, strengthening against temptation, bringing Scripture to mind to turn from wrong words and actions, closing a door against temptation, and bringing blessing, delight, wisdom unto salvation, usefulness in this life and the eternal life, and instruction in last-day truth about things coming on the world. Neglecting, backgrounding, leaving unvalued and unsearched so riches stay undiscovered slights God's Word and needs forgiveness, and lack of interest does not mean the Word lacks spirit and life but comes from lack of the Spirit, since spiritual things are spiritually discerned. When the heart is harmonized with the Word new life springs up, new light shines on every line, the Word becomes God's voice giving heavenly direction and ability to use present privileges, and searching is the alternative to fiction that draws the mind from God, to be done at once with all remaining strength because moments are golden. The Bible and the soul were made for each other, given not for ministers only but for all classes rich and poor, and to one receiving love of the truth the Word through the Holy Spirit moving on the heart is light shining in a dark place pointing the path so plainly the wayfaring person though a fool need not err. The entrance of God's words gives light and understanding to the simple, so the sincere poor and uneducated earnestly desiring God's will are not left in darkness but may reap greater consolation than the learned, and no one can safely trust the soul to ministers or learned men but must be wise for himself. Searching dispels clouds of error, leads to understanding God's revealed will, and a single text diligently searched becomes a savor of life unto life opening new treasures like bright jewels, while humble prayerful searching unto every stage of life teaches God's character and will and brings closer connection with the Creator. The Bible is God's light in human hands not to be ignored or set aside, guiding activity aright, pointing out sanctified methods for saving souls, presenting faithful work worthy of immortal inheritance, telling how to become heir of God and joint heir with Christ and obtain life measuring with the life of God. It meets the desire to accumulate and stand on vantage ground by revealing unsearchable riches, inexhaustible treasure and safe ambition to rise in moral value, and its thoughts, precepts and doctrines convey God's voice, giving knowledge, revealing the standard of life, shaping character and conduct toward duty and away from selfishness. Careful prayerful study joined with obeying in practice thoroughly equips for every good work and gives light to share, and its truths are to be followed as well as studied unto preparation for immortal life. Scripture contains truth that withstands trial, and understanding should lead to greater knowledge and sharing its treasures by teaching and godly life, while studying and claiming its promises strengthens mind and soul, brings light to those lacking understanding, equips to meet assaults and overcome as Christ did, gives firm root when shakable things shake, and guards against Satan. Habitual searching with practice keeps conscience sensitive and preserves moral integrity. Studied and obeyed, Scripture guides in God's will and duty like the cloud and pillar of fire and like a lamp and light, made a daily guide guarding against deceptions and unsupported speculation, each truth made clear rather than superficial. It is especially valued by overcomers striving amid daily work and activity, directing and sustaining as cloud by day and fire by night, and following Christ the true Shepherd and his directions keeps on the path of peace, purity and holiness unto reception among the redeemed and immortal life. Scripture testifies that Christ is soon coming to take those who loved him and waited for his appearing, warning pleasure-seekers and seekers of perishing riches and display that he will disown them as workers of iniquity. Searching prepares for what is coming on earth and for account for wasted time and money, and believers of every age should study more earnestly than ever, since greater light calls for greater zeal, faithfulness and devotion in preparation for his appearing. Its testimony calls for belief in Christ and living by his teachings, with human ambition surrendered and work in his name following his direction, and Scripture must be searched carefully to learn whether we do God's works. It is the solid rock directing to Christ whose beauty and grace must shape character lived out, for Christ cannot be kept apart from life if ready for fellowship with him in heaven. Scripture must be searched deeply not read casually to discover treasures and understand Christ's lesson, for its purpose is to lead to Christ and help obey his requirements, equipping for every good work. It clearly marks the character of Christ's true disciple, and searching with humility and reverence examines character and avoids self-deception. Diligent study fortifies against erroneous doctrine, prepares against temptation, and practicing known truth brings increased light. Searching rather than criticizing others or dwelling on faults is the divine guide for daily life. Studying God's Word gives knowledge both complete and continually growing, lessons from Christ the great Teacher repeated by converts yielding familiar and new knowledge, precious truth about him appearing in new aspect. It is God's plan for old and young as necessary for intellect and spiritual growth, Christ giving Scripture as rule of life containing his teaching worthy of closest study, his words with divine authority being spirit and life, and when eyes open its wonders come as new revelation though not new. Truth found expands in grace and power, calls forth all powers, is deep broad high yet clear in proportion to depth, elevates and ennobles toward perfection, and the Bible as God's great lesson book and educator holds truth in spiritual matters and every branch of knowledge needing spiritual insight to recognize higher education though widely neglected. The Word above all books is worthy of study and gives the only correct ideas of higher education, and when received insures eternal life, while habit shapes ability to comprehend it. Reading authors who do not know Christ charms with lies, produces distaste for Scripture, leads to forsaking it for nonessential education repeating the forbidden tree, and education separating subjects from truth and deeper study fails to give needed knowledge of God and future life, whereas teaching God's plain requirements would lead many to keep his commandments. Searching brings acquaintance with God and the Redeemer, draws the soul to Jesus in return for his love, gives peace in the unfailing promise, secures salvation and learns Canaan's songs, turning aside associates who would beguile or divert even from better-liked reading. Searching unto truth centered in Jesus requires wisdom and power beyond human ability softening the heart to receive the Word and teach its truth as it is in Jesus. Earnest prayerful study storing spiritual truths develops God-given abilities, guards from stunted minds through neglect, prepares for vigorous action and clear perception, and grounds in faith with certainty of God's leading and teaching. Searching in Christ's spirit with childlike willingness and full submission leads to truth, and obedience brings understanding of God's plan making redemption, incarnation and atonement clearer and more appreciated, with understanding growing by such study while mysteries are not solved by miracle for the lazy or inattentive. Searching is a present duty manifestly wanting, revealed when brethren in conference do not see eye to eye, and searching together with earnest prayer gives reasons of faith demanded by solemn scenes ahead, replacing complaining, malice, bitterness, wrath and war spirit when plans clash, fostering meekness and humility. Searching is a call to find truth and hear God's voice, and those in error are not condemned until truth is made plain from Scripture, but when clear evidence comes they are called to return to allegiance, and those returning are accepted, strengthened to defend truth, welcoming reproof and repenting because Scripture's truth does not change to suit anyone. It is God's call to repent and search because he gave his Son to die a cruel death to pay for souls, and if lost a person ruined himself for God did all he could, so searching means putting away novels, romance and frivolity, for there is heaven to win and hell to shun. Searching with earnest effort, much prayer and painful struggle, learning line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little, is working out salvation with fear and trembling while God works within to will and do, through which the Spirit conforms habits, sanctifies and reshapes character to the divine likeness in striving for heavenly treasure and agonizing to enter the strait gate. Searching enables doing duty rightly, perfecting Christian character so example stands on the Lord's side, waiting to learn what the Lord says to receive blessing, laying treasure in heaven, and becoming channels of true light continually seeking others rather than keeping light. Searching brings lasting impressions into mind and practical life, forming intellect, habits and future course, and time seeking the bread of life in Scripture and prayer is more valuable than attention to temporal wants and luxuries, laying hold of eternal realities. Understanding the Word and living by it brings knowledge of God and Christ, with the sixth chapter of John setting out conditions of eternal life. Searching must not be displaced by worldly cares or outward appearance, for neglecting study for worldly interests or pleasures neglects what makes wise unto eternal life, though Scripture is inspired to make complete and equipped for good works. Neglect deprives the soul of grace and power and withholds reflected light from others, whereas time searching and praying for guidance testifies of Christ the source of strength and way to eternal life. People must search for themselves rather than rely on religious teachers repeating fables and traditions, for refusal leaves vulnerable to misleading claims with appearance of authority, without knowledge of God, unable to teach children, accepting false interpretations and baseless doctrines. Scripture gives instruction and life testifying of Jesus who alone has words of eternal life, providing a complete guide to faith and conduct whose principles apply to every circumstance and make clear every duty essential to salvation and right practice. Those humbly and honestly following it will not stray, and it gives practical guidance including love and compassion to believers and strangers, to be searched diligently to understand God's words and instructions. Scriptures are to be searched diligently and understood personally, their truths shaping everyday life and shared, and even when wrest or perverted their faithful witness remains. By studying and following step by step people understand Scripture, come to know the Lord, walk and work with understanding and learn what God wants done, and searching together with the Spirit's help teaches how to do his work. The Bible is a revelation from God to be studied with growing relish and attentive perusal, unlike the newspaper the bread of life for mind and soul, plainly marking way, duty, relation and privileges of God's child, holding most important information for eternal welfare telling what must be done to be saved, each answerable for his own soul. Studying the Bible and serving God to know his will is better use of time than idling in an unhealthy relationship, since Scripture testifies of Christ and leads to knowledge of God's will. Searching reforms the unconverted, and readiness to speak simple Bible truth in everyday company without attacking position can start thought leading to searching, while diligent study gives enlightenment, prepares for other studies and work, strengthens Bible history knowledge and missionary ability. Treasures beyond surface reading are found by diligent humble search with the Spirit directing, enriching the seeker to be shared, with prayer for wisdom enabling clear explanation as digging for hidden treasure. God can use people in this study from little childhood. Its testimony exposes and reproves deeds, so those refusing truth may avoid Scripture, while searching requires careful thought and prayerful investigation, and those loving Jesus search to know and obey his will, with Christ their present help and God's word fulfilled to the faithful and his triumph bound with theirs. Scriptures are to be searched and their teaching to govern daily conduct, and carrying out justice and mercy marks Christianity. The verse is reflected in resolving to search day by day as lifelong sanctification and growth in Christian character.
Sharing Truth With Others
Those who would guide others into the way of life must themselves understand the testimony of Scripture concerning Christ as the source of eternal life, and be able to present the evidence of truth intelligently and give reasons for faith. Prayerful searching equips believers to present truth rightly to unbelievers, to let light shine, and to awaken interest in studying Scripture. Searching is a duty for everyone who professes Christ, not to be neglected for sciences or temporal concerns, for it guides the life and equips believers to explain Scripture intelligently.
Parents are to make the Word their guide and study it with their children, shaping minds by Christ's standard rather than the world's, and studying themselves so they can guide children wisely rather than leave them alone. This brings spiritual strength for good works and eternal life, and equips for every good work with light to share. Christ commands every follower to become a Bible student rather than remain content in ignorance, and this is part of the mind and will of God for His scattered people to let light shine, impress unbelievers with sincerity of faith, and work as missionaries where they live. Christ's lessons to His first disciples remain for teachers and students to learn and treasure in the heart, and students in schools must be taught to know God and Jesus Christ through the Scriptures as the foundation of all true knowledge. God's Word is a guide amid daily work, especially valued by overcomers striving amid activity, sustaining and directing like the pillars of cloud and fire.
Sabbath-school teachers are to seek divine truth for themselves and lead pupils to seek it as hidden treasure, so they can impart truth in service to God. Teachers should search with open hearts to the light given, and as they walk in that light they are taught to practice truth, rely less on human theories and finite wisdom, and hunger for wisdom from God. Making Bible truth plain to young people and searching with them sows truth in receptive hearts, and this study lays hold of eternal realities. Diligent study gives enlightenment, prepares students for other studies and work, strengthens knowledge of Bible history and ability to serve as missionaries, and God can use people from the time they are little children.
Getting publications before the public leads people to investigate the Bible for themselves. Missionary work that brings publications into families with conversation and prayer fulfills this call, for studying the Bible is of highest importance and leading the public to it is more important than other work, and it trains men and women for pastoral labor. Sharing the message can lead people to examine what the Scriptures say, and reading matter that takes what is found in Scripture and presents it attractively calls attention to truth. Books and papers can introduce truth into families who will not come to hear, and may benefit them later.
The call to search applies to studying and presenting clearly the Bible truths that have been calling people out from the world, including truths entrusted over the past fifty years. It supports searching and presenting the Bible's truths and evidence, including truths neglected or buried that direct to Christ and eternal life and call people out from the world. Teachers of the gospel must keep studying and seek the Lord wholeheartedly rather than relying on old discourses, remaining humble and receptive to instruction from fellow workers and laypeople as well as from God, which prepares them to receive truth, grow, and share what they learn. Ministers should study earnestly and prayerfully until conversant so they can clearly teach Bible truth including prophecy and practical subjects. They should teach people how to study, follow preaching with personal Bible study, and deepen the impression on hearts and consciences.
Searching diligently now firmly grounds the soul in knowledge of truth in order to save many by winning others from error, centered on holding up Christ before unbelievers as the anointed, crucified, risen Saviour witnessed by prophets and testified by believers, through whose name comes forgiveness of sins. Knowing this witness grounds faith and equips to lead others from error to truth. Searching earnestly helps present the truth as it is in Jesus to others. The Scriptures testify of Christ and are to be searched so people may know Him and find the way to eternal life, and this supports teaching people to read and study for themselves. Those formerly enslaved had been denied literacy because knowledge could awaken desire for liberty, and after emancipation they needed instruction so they could search its truths and know God and Jesus Christ.
Searching to learn the Lord's will guides parents in faithful ministry, and Scripture teaches salvation comes only through God's justice, mercy, and love. Studying together with earnest prayer helps understand God's Word and know reasons for faith. The Word is the field of revelation and storehouse of Christ's unsearchable riches, interlaced with golden veins and precious things, its truths treasure hid in a field to be joyfully mastered, brought to light only by searching and by grace and the enlightenment of the Spirit. Daily searching after the noble Berean example, to see whether things are so and receiving the pure Word with readiness of mind, prepares believers to give every man a reason of hope with meekness and fear.
Those baptized to come out from the world under the bloodstained banner of Prince Emmanuel as laborers together with God must search diligently as of highest importance to understand what the Lord says, and having learned His will must do it heartily to make it known to the perishing, sowing truth as seed to reap a harvest. The Scriptures are to be searched to learn truth as it is in Jesus. Study should lead to deeper knowledge of the plan of salvation and of Christ whom Scripture presents, and knowing arguments from publications is no substitute for personal study. The Word contains rules of life for every class and vocation, and earnest prayer and careful study help God's workers understand doctrine and apply its practical lessons, and diligent searching helps understand Christ's lessons.
Searching the Scriptures is eating the bread of life and must be kept up with deep interest, putting light on the pathway and increasing appetite for heavenly bread. This means reading and studying the Word and not filling the mind with useless books, magazines, and novels that give no light, destroying useless reading and spending money saved to send papers to those who have them not. Diligent searching seeks truths of salvation and what they teach about relation to Jesus Christ and responsibility to God as free moral agents, bringing greater light for accepting responsibilities and sharing comforting hopeful knowledge. It leads to know Christ by experience as sin-bearer in order to point others to Him. Searching joined with doing what is taught and praying for clearer understanding is necessary to know true sanctification, and claim to be sanctified without desiring either does not show true sanctification.
Scripture must be searched and explained to those willing to learn its requirements, and through that instruction they can understand what true discipleship requires. The Scriptures testify of Christ and are to be searched, guiding young people to consider how Christ would act and whether they walk in received light, with greater knowledge bringing greater responsibility to lead rightly. The whole Bible is a manifestation of Christ, His word gives life and power, and when His visible presence is withdrawn followers are to make the word their source of power and fix faith on it, as food sustains physical life. Searching reveals God and Jesus Christ and explains why Christ left heaven, took humanity, and came among fallen people, through whom humanity can receive eternal riches. Diligent prayerful searching with the Spirit quickening understanding leads to knowledge of God and His love as revealed in Christ through personal experience.
Searching is wisdom, and knowledge gained can be used in God's work. Diligent deep searching rather than surface understandings, even over details thought settled, with careful comparison of Scripture with Scripture, can uncover errors and reveal precious truths about Christ, for Scripture is a mine of His riches. Searching gives believing families words of wisdom to speak, and done with much prayer under inspiration and love of truth as it is in Jesus prepares them in test and trial to close lips against accusation concerning brethren and to speak words imparting courage and strengthening faith which works by love and purifies the soul. Precious truths found by personal diligent searching should be shared with others in plain natural simplicity. People must gain experience of truth for themselves rather than depend on or copy others, for Scripture directs to Christ the source of wisdom and grace, and searching roots and grounds in truth.
Searching with deep interest feeds appetite for the bread of heaven, unlike reading that gives no light to the path. Christ's teaching as precious legacy in His Word must be made our own by diligent searching, for He restored jewels torn from setting and buried under error, many truths hidden like ore, recovered by searching joined with asking God for wisdom since essential truths are too deep for unaided research. Scripture is God's word plainly setting forth duties and must be searched so as not to go astray, for people are accountable at judgment and religious pretension does not excuse disobedience. Its plain light reveals God's will and claims of His law, exposing transgression and the sinner's need to repent, trust Christ's atoning blood, and receive pardon. Eternal life is found in the Word for those who obey its instruction, studying teaches conditions of salvation, and entering God's city requires full obedience.
God's plan is for old and young to study His Word as necessary for intellectual and spiritual growth, for Christ gave the Scriptures as rule of life containing His teaching worthy of closest study, His words with divine authority being spirit and life, and when eyes open wonderful things come as new revelation though not new. Scripture must be searched, not merely accepted as true, because it contains God's revealed will and testifies of Christ, its value known through obeying its instructions, and neglecting to search is part of disobedience leading away from Christ and faithful life. Searching to learn truth is part of seeking eternal life, and those seeking with purpose to cleanse sin welcome reproof and repent, because Scripture's truth does not change to suit anyone. Searching reveals more and more gems of truth and feeds desire for holiness. The very first duty of a Christian is to be an earnest student of the Word, not basing knowledge of God on others' opinions but on Scriptural truths, because God gave the Bible as revelation of Himself, calling judgment-bound people to meditate and practice its treasures, a meaning very few realize.
Searching leads people to find truth for themselves, for Scriptures testify of Christ. Attention should center on the Bible as sure word of prophecy, grounding faith and preparing for eternal life. Searching leads to Christ whom they testify of, revealing the Saviour as present help in need, whose principles taken as spiritual food form character to receive counsel and obey. Every person is called to search for themselves with earnest effort, much prayer, and painful struggle, learning line upon line, which is working out salvation with fear and trembling while God works within, through which the Spirit conforms habits, sanctifies and reshapes character to divine likeness in striving for heavenly treasure and the strait gate. Diligent prayerful study taking in both important truth and practical godliness produces deeper piety, firmer faith, and decided effort to live by everything spoken, for God put great light in His Word, earnest study brings it into the heart, but it is kept only by bringing it inward and is lost by neglect, while light reading creates distaste for searching.
Earnest searching uncovers treasure, for the Bible is God's great lesson book and educator containing truth in spiritual matters and every branch of knowledge, needing spiritual insight to recognize its higher education though widely neglected. Scripture must be searched earnestly to find truth and spiritual treasure as wholehearted patient work joined with prayer and action, and Jesus quickens understanding of those who seek so. Diligent searching is the knowledge students should pursue as higher education, for Scripture makes God's requirements plain and teaching them would lead many to keep His commandments. Searching Scripture which testifies of Christ and points to eternal life, with teachable heart, shows God sanctified the seventh day as Sabbath and calls to obedience, while refusing darkens mind and risks eternal life. Time spent studying and praying for the Bread of Life brings spiritual strength and turns attention from temporal wants to eternal interests.
Church members, not only ministers, are to search for themselves and depend on God for instruction, and as the Spirit teaches divine truth they can present the Word with power and share light with the world. Diligent searching is connected with receiving the Holy Spirit, who presents truth in language all ages and levels can understand, for Christ's words are spirit and life. Searching is essential for success and as necessary for spiritual growth as eating is for physical strength, manufacturing precious golden thoughts that expand the soul to realize the plan of salvation. It means reflecting on elevated things, prizing morning hours and leisure, girding the mind, weighing motives, waking weak minds, increasing intellect, driving mind from narrow common thought, and unfolding moral perceptions by dwelling on Jesus' love. Those professing to love God are called to search diligently, which matters because they must not be found transgressing God's law, and excuses will not withstand judgment.
Diligent study matters because Scriptures are truth of the living God, foundation of faith, and assurance on which hope of eternal life is built. They are to be searched earnestly for they testify of Jesus, helping present truth as it is in Jesus. They are to be searched diligently to understand Christ's lessons. They give instruction and life and testify of Jesus who alone has words of eternal life, providing complete guide to faith and conduct whose principles apply to every circumstance and make clear every duty essential to salvation, so humble followers will not stray. Frivolous reading weakens desire to search and receive heavenly nourishment, and a mind fed on frivolous tales may lose desire and ability to consider duty and destiny.
Scriptures are to be searched and clearly mark character of Christ's true disciple, and searching with humility and reverence helps examine character and avoid self-deception. Searching must be joined with much prayer for wisdom, needed because God's dealings appear mysterious, His ways and thoughts are not ours and often contrary to human plans, and perverse self-deceiving nature flatters itself that gratifying self is carrying out God's mind. Study prepares believers to understand events ahead and give reason for faith amid opposition and efforts to restrict conscience. People must search for themselves rather than rely on religious teachers who repeat fables and traditions, for refusing leaves vulnerable to misleading claims with appearance of authority. Searching reveals God and Jesus Christ.
Study should lead to deeper knowledge of the plan of salvation. Diligent prayerful searching with the Spirit quickening understanding is called for. Searching and praying for clearer understanding are necessary to know true sanctification. People should understand God's word for themselves, not ministers only. Searching God's Word is needed to know His doctrine. Careful earnest searching to understand basis of faith guards against being drawn to opposers of God's law. Scripture must be searched deeply, not read casually, to discover treasures and understand Christ's lesson, leading to Christ, helping obey His requirements, and equipping for every good work. Scriptures point the way to eternal life as guide to higher holier life, and neglecting study neglects that guide.
Searching is necessary because Scriptures testify of Christ the source of strength and way to eternal life, and time for searching and praying must not be displaced by worldly cares or outward appearance, for neglecting deprives soul of grace and power and withholds reflected light from others. Diligent prayerful searching makes giants in understanding doctrines and practical lessons, facing difficulties vigorously, digging till the gem lies plain and precious, not dwelling on one point but examining another so mystery after mystery unfolds, securing useful knowledge and increasing mental power, the key to one mystery revealing other gems. It requires ministers to thoroughly understand prophecies and doctrinal subjects instead of confining themselves to few discourses. Scripture is to be searched, not merely read, with prayerful mind to find pure truth, revealing God's will as rule of faith so every idea is tested by it rather than reshaping it, seeking truth as hidden treasure.
Truth searched personally is to be used to prepare for duty and trial, with God's Word rather than human authority as sure guide, for trusting human judgment or echoing another can lead astray. Understanding the Word and living by it brings knowledge of God and Christ, and the sixth chapter of John sets out conditions of eternal life. Study should turn people to the Bible to learn God's will and receive assurance, looking to Jesus for light rather than relying on another's interpretations. Education separating subjects from the word of truth and deeper study fails to give needed knowledge. Diligent searching leads to truth because Scriptures testify of Christ, the Bible is illuminated for searchers, and its light comes from Christ the Sun of Righteousness.
People must search for themselves to learn duty rather than relying on leaders as guides, for Scriptures testify of Christ. They testify of Christ and point to salvation through Him, as guide to higher life and source of instruction, history, and biography. Earnest study brings enlightenment, the Bible provides knowledge preparing medical missionaries, and searching helps students learn lessons and retain study. Scripture is to be searched as divinely given lesson-book and revelation of God, its truths disclosing character of its Author and bringing closer connection with Creator and clearer knowledge of His will. Scriptures contain saving truth and testify of Christ, and earnest searching helps know relationship to God and His will, calling for diligent seeking and faith in God who rewards seekers.
