John 7:25

Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

Some of those belonging to Jerusalem identified Jesus as the very man the authorities were seeking to kill, so the murderous design was public knowledge among the people of the city. He was teaching boldly and openly in public in the temple, in the very presence of those rulers, yet they said nothing against Him and did nothing to stop or silence Him. That contrast between His fearless public teaching and their silence was what startled the Jerusalem hearers and drew out their question.

Seeing His boldness amid the rulers' inaction, they asked among themselves whether the rulers had at last learned and recognized that He was indeed the Christ. Their reasoning was that only such a change in the rulers could explain why a man marked for death was allowed to speak so freely without rebuke.

His courage, His fearless teaching, and His dignified bearing made a deep impression, leading many to consider whether He was the Christ. That impression inclined many hearts toward accepting Him as the Son of God.
