John 7:32
The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
The verse belongs to the account of the rulers' opposition to Jesus at the feast. The officers were sent after the Pharisees heard the people murmuring such things concerning Him, and in response the Pharisees joined with the chief priests in sending officers to seize Him. This took place amid growing public interest in Jesus and opposition to His teaching. It was because He was drawing the people to Himself.
The Pharisees together with the chief priests and rulers sent officers to seize and arrest Him. Their opposition included schemes to silence Him by violence and to humble Him before the people. They wanted to silence and destroy Him, showing their determination to silence Him.
Their resistance came from refusal to seek and do God's will, which kept them from recognizing truth. The officers were so influenced and affected by His divine presence that they could not lay hands on Him, so the attempt to arrest Him failed. They had witnessed His compassion for the suffering, His authoritative release of people from Satan's power, and His wisdom, and His words and works had so captivated them that they returned without Him.
