John 7:41

Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

Jesus was at Jerusalem for the feast when the rulers watched Him and sought to silence Him, seeking also to humble Him before the people as a Galilean rabbi. Among His hearers the response split, for some declared Him to be the Christ while others asked whether Christ could come out of Galilee. Their objection rested on hearsay and ignorance, wrongly assuming He had been born in Galilee when He had in fact been born in Bethlehem.

Those who confessed Him as the Christ did so through the convincing power of truth, despite opposition and disputes from people who wanted their own way and clung to their opinions. This disagreement produced division among the people over Jesus. That divided response belonged to a wider conflict in which some influential Jews believed in Him while the Pharisees opposed Him and sought His death, so that belief in Him could lead to exclusion from the synagogue.
