Micah Beneath the Stars Above Bethlehemby emmanuel_higgins

John 7:42

Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

Jesus was at Jerusalem for the feast when this question was raised. The rulers were watching Him there for a way to silence Him and bring humiliation upon Him. It belonged to a conflict in which His opponents were seeking grounds to condemn Him and put Him to death. At the same time the people were affected by His works and teaching, and even the officers sent to arrest Him were affected in the same way.

The question states the scriptural expectation that Christ comes from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the town where David was. The objectors used their belief that Jesus had come from Galilee to question whether He could be the Christ. That disagreement over His origin divided the people. In fact Bethlehem was the place where Jesus was born, which shows the idea that He had been born in Galilee to be mistaken.
