John 8:14

Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.

This saying belongs to Jesus' declaration that He is the light of the world and that whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. It was spoken to answer the Pharisees' charge that bearing record of Himself was egotistical and untrue, reasserting His divine commission. His self-witness is true because He knows whence He came and whither He goes, meaning He knows His divine origin and destination, while His opponents know neither where He comes from nor where He is going. His commission is from God and the highest authority to do His Father's work, not from human religious authorities.

His hearers cannot tell whence He comes and whither He goes because they are ignorant of His divine character and mission. They failed to search the prophecies concerning the Messiah as was their privilege and duty, and they have no connection with God and heaven so they do not comprehend His work. Because they do not truly know the Father they do not know Him.

Although they received the most convincing evidence and strongest proof of His divinity, they had no desire to know Him, closed their minds to the evidence, and refused to open their minds to understand. Prejudice and imagination ruled them even while they claimed piety and superior knowledge of God. Having at first set their hearts against Him, their hearts grew harder until they were determined not to believe or accept Him. Their lack of true knowledge destroyed their spiritual sight.
