John 8:20

These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.

Jesus spoke these words in the treasury as He taught in the temple, declaring Himself to be the light of the world in the temple court in connection with the Feast of Tabernacles. The great lamps then lit in that court recalled the pillar of light that had guided Israel in the wilderness. They also pointed forward to the coming Messiah. Christ Himself is the true source of spiritual light who illumines the darkness of the world. The temple lamps were only an imperfect symbol of His mission.

No one laid hands on Him because the appointed time for His death had not yet come. The same divine restraint guarded Paul in Ephesus, whose time to die as a martyr had not yet come. Therefore God's angels protected him from the violence of the mob.
