John 8:24
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
Jesus declared Himself the light of the world amid the temple illumination that recalled God's guidance of Israel and pointed to the Messiah. He warned that unless people believe He is the promised Christ they will perish unforgiven in continued disobedience and transgression. Such dying in sins comes from persisting against light and knowledge until God withdraws His protection and leaves the sinner to Satan's power beyond cure. Believing that saves is not mere assent but full surrender and entire transformation of character into holiness through Christ's grace. Therefore those who have the light must urgently warn and labor for souls around them lest they die unwarned and rise against the unfaithful in judgment.
Setting and Warning
The saying was uttered at the Feast of Tabernacles, when the temple lamps recalled the light that had guided Israel and pointed forward to the coming Messiah, and in that setting Jesus set Himself forth as the source of spiritual light that illumines the world. It warns that those who do not believe that Jesus is the promised Messiah, the Christ, will die in their sins. He is from above and not of this world, while His opponents are from beneath and of this world, and their false ideas about the Messiah keep them from recognizing who He is.
To die in sins is to perish in sins if life is lost in a continued unrepentant life of disobedience, transgression and sin, with no strength given from God to justify that course. At death such a one is past all cure in guilt and sin. Persisting in sin against light and knowledge brings danger of eternal ruin, for God withdraws His protection and leaves the person under Satan's control. Dying in sins is being cut off in sins by Satan's cruel power after going farther onto his ground.
Satan watches closely for that moment, and only a little farther on his ground brings the point where the Spirit of God is driven forever from the heart and the Lord leaves the person to Satan. God did not intend for most of the world to die in this condition, but Christ died to redeem the whole human race from ruin. Those who would not die in their sins must believe in Christ and have the truth as it is in Jesus, whose words and example are God's power and wisdom for saving those who believe.
Believing and Being Changed
Failing to meet the conditions laid down in God's Word leaves people to die in their sins. Those conditions are not mere assent but the moral changes needed in character through Christ's grace. Walking with God and being fitted for heaven requires separation from the world and strong, living faith. A person may be surrounded by the light of truth yet remain in danger if destitute of God's love and ignorant of His power.
Belief means surrender rather than a life spent in self. It means giving the Lord all one is and has, pledging one's faculties to the Saviour who gave His life, giving up obstinacy and surrendering fully to God. Escape from dying in sins and perishing with the ungodly requires an entire transformation of character. That transformation comes by turning to Christ, living by God's law, and pursuing holiness, godliness, a pure heart, and a life shaped after Christ.
The warning reaches professed Sabbathkeepers who cherish grave sins and fail to purify their souls by obeying the truth. Unless they are awakened, convicted, and converted, they will die in their sins. Those given great light and precious opportunities who remain earthly-minded and corrupt in thought and practice face punishment greater than that of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Warning Others to Live
Blood-bought souls in the very shadow of believers' homes die in their sins and die unwarned when there are no decided reforms in homes and churches. Parents who do not labor for the salvation of their children leave them to this end through unbelief, worldliness, and indolence. Yet God will work with efforts when all that He has enjoined and qualified is done, so Satan need not always triumph. The light reflected from the cross of Calvary shows that a greater work than yet witnessed remains to be done before success crowns the effort.
Dying in sins comes upon backsliders and sinners who are surrounded by ministers yet receive from them no burden, warning, weeping, and pleading as spiritual physicians skilled to treat souls diseased with sin. Those who die in their sins will in the Judgment confront with reproaches of guilt the indifferent and sleeping ministers who neglected them. Unfaithful ministers who let souls die in sin face retribution for having their blood on their garments. Because young people may die without believing in Christ and die in their sins, teachers are responsible to consider whether their example and conduct are leading them toward Christ or confirming them in a wrong spirit.
Those who do not believe die in their sins, perishing in darkness and error without the message of truth. This was seen in those swept away by sudden calamity like the earthquake in Italy. Many still remain unconverted and dying in their sins, needing the peace of Christ in their hearts. Their lost condition is cause for aching grief and for urgent work to carry truth to others still in darkness.
