John 8:35

And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

The servant who does not stay in the household forever is the servant of sin, while the Son stays forever. This was spoken in Christ's teaching as the light of the world, given in the morning in the court of the temple in connection with the services of the Feast of Tabernacles, when great lamps were kindled to shed light over Jerusalem in memory of the pillar of light that guided Israel and in hope of the Messiah's coming to give light to Israel. Because the Son remains forever, He can set those enslaved to sin truly free from its bondage by divine power and grace. Continuing in His word makes true disciples, knowing the truth makes free, and those whom the Son makes free are free indeed.

Setting and Bondage Meaning

Jesus spoke these words as the light of the world in the morning in the court of the temple in connection with the services of the Feast of Tabernacles. After the evening sacrifice two lofty standards bearing great lamps had been kindled to shed light over Jerusalem. That illumination commemorated the pillar of light that guided Israel in the desert and expressed hope of the Messiah's coming to shed His light upon Israel.

The servant in the saying is the servant of sin, who does not remain in the household forever, while the Son remains forever. Whoever commits sin is that servant, and does not abide in the house forever, while the Son abides ever. Slavery to sin does not have the permanence of the Son's place in the household, so it is not final.

The saying exposes those in bondage to unbelief and evil whose claim to be Abraham's children is contradicted by refusal to obey God. That contradiction was shown in the attempt to kill Jesus, whom God sent, who stands in contrast to those who serve sin. Those servants may boast that they were never in bondage, yet they are bound to the most cruel of all tyrants. Having placed themselves under Satan's training, they treat God's people as he directs.

Servants of sin hear the word of truth but hate the message and the messenger because the truth disturbs them in their deceptive practices. Those ruled by selfish impulses and passions are in such servitude. Obedience to God is liberty from sin's control, and God offers freedom through service to Him.

Setting aside God's law leaves churches in bondage to sin even when they claim to be free. Truth from heaven is not bondage. Freedom does not mean permission to sin.

Freedom Through the Son

Because the Son remains in the house forever, while the servant of sin does not, He is able to make sinners truly free, so that one enslaved to sin can be set free and rescued from bondage through divine power and grace. Continuing in His word makes true disciples, knowing the truth makes free, and when the Son makes free there is freedom indeed. That promise stands against the boast of never having been in bondage, for those who commit sin are servants of sin and do not abide forever, yet are bound to the cruelest of tyrants, having placed themselves under Satan's training and treating God's people as he directs, hearing the word of truth but hating message and messenger because truth disturbs their deceptive practices.

The promised freedom is found in living in Christ and obeying the light God gives, and those who accept and follow the truth are free in Christ. Each person is accountable for the light received in his own generation. One held in bondage to sin needs the Son to be made free, and that freedom comes through Jesus' strength and not one's own. Through faith in God's promise of forgiveness, those enslaved by sinful habits can be freed in Christ and rejoice in the liberty of the children of God.

Divine grace and the Holy Spirit can free people from sin and bring spiritual life, understanding, and an enlightened mind. Those released from the bondage of sin and worldly principles find lasting life and freedom in Jesus. Christ gives His life as the ransom that delivers people from sin's bondage, and those who are free in Him are one with Him. Without His sacrifice every child of Adam would remain in bondage to sin, but through Him people can be raised to a higher plane and brought into connection with heaven's light. The freedom the truth gives is seen when believers turn from wrongs, confess them, and no longer remain bound by reproach and unbelief.

Those leavened with backsliding do not abide in God's house unless they repent and are converted by refusing evil and choosing good, seeking God with all humility of mind, standing on the platform of eternal truth, and laying hold by faith upon what is prepared in Christ, which brings healing. Then the church appears in God-given simplicity and purity, separate from earthly entanglements, showing that the truth has made her free indeed, and the men and women composing her abide as God's chosen, His pleasant portion, His representatives, precious in His sight, while without repentance she eats the fruit of her own doings until she abhors herself. His mission was to set souls free from slavery to sin, and though His few years of labor lay among the Jews, He set forth the object of His mission and laid the foundation for His disciples to carry the message of a Saviour's love to those outside. Though generations pass and He has ascended to heaven, His work does not cease but is carried forward by His witnesses with even greater power, because He and His Father work together to do greater things for His people than were seen while He was among them.
