John 8:54
Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
Jesus spoke these words in the court of the temple specially connected with the services of the Feast of Tabernacles. It was morning after the evening kindling of the great temple lamps and the rejoicing over them. The sun had just risen above the Mount of Olives and its rays fell on the marble palaces and lighted the gold of the temple walls, and Jesus pointed to it to declare Himself the light of the world. The saying belongs to His teaching about the Light of Life recorded in John 8:12-59 and illustrated in John 9.
The saying means that Jesus does not claim honor for Himself, but His honor comes from His Father who honors Him. The hearers' claim that the Father is their God is false because they reject and seek to kill the Son whom God sent. Recognizing Jesus as sent from God would have shown their love for God. His authority rests on His knowledge of the Father, whom His hearers who claim the Father as their God do not truly know.
