John 9:10

Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

The question was put to the man born blind after his sight was restored, asking how his eyes had been opened, and it came from neighbors and others who knew him as they looked with astonishment on his transformation. His answer began a public account describing what Jesus had done for him. That healing stands as wonderful public evidence of the truth and divine character of Christ's mission.

The healing was a gracious, compassionate act of Jesus as the compassionate Shepherd toward a poor man who did not yet know who had healed him. The man learned Jesus' identity only when Jesus revealed Himself to him as the Son of God, showing the Lord's anxious desire to save him. The Pharisees also questioned him about the healing, but jealousy, prejudice, and self-righteousness kept them from accepting what it proved. They despised him with sneers and hatred, and their spiritual blindness stands in contrast to his restored sight.

The verse is echoed spiritually in the testimony that Christ has opened a person's eyes. He gives spiritual sight to recognize one's own poverty and nakedness, and changes the heart and will so that grace brings the person into harmony with God's will and obedience to His law.
