John 9:35

Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

After Jesus healed the man born blind, the Pharisees and religious leaders expelled him from the synagogue and cast him from their fold for bearing witness to Christ's power, and when Jesus heard of it He sought him out and found him. The man had already acknowledged Jesus as a bearer of divine power, but he did not yet know Him as the healer, so Jesus revealed Himself to him more fully as the Son of God and asked whether he believed in Him. His restored physical sight was joined by opened spiritual understanding, as Jesus' gracious work led him to recognize Christ as God's messenger and to worship Him.

Being cast out and rejected by religious leaders did not mean he was rejected by God, for Jesus as the true Shepherd drew him and brought him into His own fold and gave him a place among those who belong to Him. This seeking shows Jesus' sympathy and tender care extended even to one who did not yet know Him as a believer. The question about believing in the Son of God calls for more than a speculative opinion or merely accepting that He is the world's Redeemer; it asks whether a person trusts Him with the whole heart as their own personal Savior with an intelligent, living faith.

Through such faith God dwells in the soul and brings the soul into God, as the believer brings Christ into daily life, practices His virtues, brings words, actions, and thoughts under His Spirit, represents Jesus in words and actions, and lives in dependence on Christ for all received, even the weakest and humblest. Those entrusted with responsibility show whether Christ is working through them by how they treat His people, and they must not hurt, discourage, or indifferently allow harm to come to them.
