Jonah 1:12
And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
The verse belongs to the record of Jonah's experience in the first and second chapters of Jonah, in which God by severe affliction taught Jonah, while fleeing from duty, the lesson of obedience that enabled him to fulfill the purpose for the inhabitants of Nineveh, a record worthy of most careful study.
Jonah knew that the great storm and tempest had come upon the sailors because of him, because of his flight from the Lord.
In this he accepted responsibility for the danger facing them and identified his own life as the cause of their peril.
He told the sailors to take him up and cast him forth into the sea, trusting that the sea would then become calm for them.
The sailors first tried to reach land, but after they cast Jonah overboard the sea ceased from raging.
After the sea was calmed, the sailors feared the Lord, offered a sacrifice, and made vows.
