Jonah Asleep While Sailors Throw Cargo Overboardby emmanuel_higgins

Jonah 1:6

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

Jonah was asleep while a great storm threatened the ship, and the shipmaster found him in that sleep in the midst of the danger. The shipmaster woke him and urgently told him to arise and call upon his God, to get up and pray to his God and seek deliverance from the danger. The hope held out was that God would think upon them and take notice of them, that He would regard them and keep them from perishing, sparing the ship and its crew. While the mariners were calling on their own gods, the shipmaster also looked to Jonah's God for help. The verse belongs to the record of Jonah's experience in Jonah 1-2, in which God in His providence taught Jonah the lesson of obedience by severe affliction so that he could fulfill God's purpose in behalf of the inhabitants of Nineveh, a record worthy of most careful study.

The call to the sleeper applies as a call to those spiritually asleep to awake, pray to God, and seek deliverance, to stop cooperating with Satan and call upon the Lord. It is a call to break with Satan and join themselves to Christ, to break with Satan to join with Christ. In contrast to the sleeping one, the Lord never sleeps and does not slumber or sleep. Awakening means recognizing the danger and consecrating themselves and all they have to His service.
