Jonah Kneels in Thanks on the Beachby emmanuel_higgins

Jonah 2:9

But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

The declaration belongs to Jonah's experience under severe affliction, through which God taught him obedience and enabled him to carry out God's purpose for Nineveh. In it he responds to deliverance with thanksgiving, promises to fulfill his vows, and declares that salvation belongs to the Lord. His trials revived his confidence in God's power to save and renewed his determination to obey even at personal cost.

Salvation comes from God as its author, by grace and not by human effort. Deliverance from the enemy comes only by accepting Christ as personal Saviour. Saving faith has its place in human effort.
