Joshua 1:16

And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.

The pledge was given as the people prepared to enter the land and fight, after Joshua had ordered them to prepare three days' supply of food and to put the army in readiness for the advance. In it the people promised complete obedience, to do everything he commanded and to go wherever he sent them. By this pledge they accepted his leadership and gave him their hearty agreement, confidence, and support. They pledged to follow and obey him just as they had obeyed and followed Moses.

They added the promise that anyone who rebelled against his orders would be put to death. They asked that the Lord be with him as He had been with Moses. They urged him to be strong and courageous.
