The northern campaign closed with the allied Canaanite forces defeated, their stronghold at Hazor burned, and the land resting from war. In that setting Joshua carried out all that the Lord had commanded through Moses. He left nothing undone of the divine instruction handed down to him. That completeness of obedience included burning the captured chariots and disabling the horses rather than keeping them for battle, so that Israel would place trust in the Lord rather than in military strength.
