Joshua 12:3

And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to Beth-jeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdoth-pisgah:

Joshua 12:3 belongs to the list in Joshua 12:1-24 of the kings, places, and territory Israel conquered east of the Jordan, describing its boundaries and landmarks. It stands within the larger portion of Joshua dealing with the division and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes. That portion shows Israel's lack of faith and slowness in taking possession, yet it closes with the assurance that God fulfilled every good thing He had promised.

The sea of Chinneroth is the lake later known as the Sea of Galilee, the Lake of Gennesaret, and the Sea of Chinnereth. The name Gennesaret is a modification of the old Hebrew word Chinneroth, which means harp and was given to the lake on account of its shape. In ancient times the lake was called the Sea of Chinnereth after a town of that name near it.
