Joshua Looks Over the Crowns of Conquered Kingsby emmanuel_higgins

Joshua 12:7

And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side Jordan on the west, from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;

Joshua 12 is the register of the kings and places smitten by Joshua and the children of Israel on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon to Mount Halak going up to Seir. It is at once the list of the western conquests and the record of the land which Joshua gave to the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions. That giving belongs to the larger account of the division and settling of the Promised Land in Joshua 11-21.

The division of the land took place about five years after the crossing of the Jordan. Joshua led Israel across the Jordan and divided the land, setting them on the way to conquer their enemies and enter the promised rest. These western conquests included carrying out the vow to destroy the people and cities of Arad after Arad had earlier defeated Israel. Victory came with the Captain of Jehovah's hosts, while failure to trust brought defeat and delayed possession, showing Israel's lack of faith and slowness in possessing the land. Despite that slowness, the record confirms that God wrought all that He had promised and no good thing failed.
