Aged Joshua Surveys the Land Yet to Possessby emmanuel_higgins

Joshua 13:1

Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

Joshua was old and stricken in years when the word came to him, and though the power of the Canaanites had been broken, very much of the land God had given still remained unconquered and unpossessed. Time and opportunity to take it had already been granted, yet Israel had not entered into full possession. That remainder stood as a rebuke for neglect, for God meant the land to be filled with a people who loved and feared Him. By failing to possess it, Israel allowed idolatrous Canaanites to grow strong, and idolatry diminished the influence of God's name and glory among them.

Joshua himself was not to carry the war forward, but both the land already conquered and the land still unsubdued were to be allotted among the tribes. Each tribe was made responsible for fully possessing its own inheritance. God promised that He Himself would drive out the enemies, and that still greater possessions would be granted if Israel remained faithful to His covenant.

The same warning rests on states and conferences where leaders fail to use their means and opportunities to spread the truth and to establish the church.
