Joshua 13:10

And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon;

The verse is part of the record largely written by Joshua. His name means saviour, and he was one of the two men of his generation who wholly followed the Lord. At about eighty years of age he entered his greatest work of leading Israel through the Jordan and dividing the land to put them in a fair way to conquer all their foes and find the promised rest. The Captain of Jehovah's hosts was with him in all the work of victory connected with the verse. The possession listed in the verse could have been gained soon had Israel been faithful, but backsliding turned years of possible prosperity into adversity and captivity.

The verse lies in chapters 11 to 13, which cover the conquest of Canaan and the assignment of lands and are distinct from Joshua's farewell at the end of the book. The description of the distribution of the land drew on written records that accurately described the property. It names the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites as part of the many cities and towns named in the book to be listed and located on a map.

In the connected story of Israel from the building of the tabernacle and its services to the taking and return of the ark, the verse belongs to the victory over Sihon and Og and the dividing of the land. That connected story runs continuously from the tabernacle to the ark. It is put in simple form for children, with practical moral lessons made plain where a child could not draw them alone.
