Joshua 13:23

And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

Joshua stands first among the twelve historical books named for Joshua, recording the history of the chosen people as a nation from their first occupation of the land of Canaan to the return from the captivity. Within that record this verse belongs to chapters 13 to 22, which give the account of the distribution of the land. Those chapters accurately describe the property from written documents.

The inheritance of the children of Reuben lay east of the Jordan, with Jordan itself forming its border, and it included the district around Salt. Travel from Salt to Jerusalem by way of Jericho therefore passes westward over the Jordan.
