Joshua 13:8

With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them;

The Reubenites and the Gadites shared together the inheritance that Moses gave them east of the Jordan. This was part of the division and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel after the conquest under Joshua. That land east of the Jordan was their chosen possession, and the two and one-half tribes returned to that eastern possession after all Israel had received its inheritance.

In the connected Bible story this division follows the building of the tabernacle, the wilderness wanderings, the crossing of the Jordan, the taking of Jericho, the sin of Achan and the defeat at Ai, and the sun and moon obeying Joshua. It leads through the division of the land and the last words of Joshua on to Gideon, Samson, Ruth, Samuel, and the taking and return of the ark. It belongs to the whole Bible story told in simple, connected form for children, with practical moral lessons woven in where a child could not draw them from the text alone.
