Joshua 14:1

And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.

The verse records and introduces how the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan and how that inheritance was divided among them, opening the account of division and settling carried through Joshua chapters 11-21. The inheritance was distributed by Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun together with the heads of the fathers of the tribes, with Joshua leading the distribution. The allotment was made to the twelve tribes descended from Jacob's twelve sons, into which Israel had been organized after leaving Egypt. The distribution was based on records that accurately described the land and its property.

Its setting is after Joshua had led Israel across the Jordan and set the people on the way to conquer their enemies and enter the promised rest. God's help brought victory, but Israel was slow and lacking in faith, and its failures delayed possession of the land and brought adversity instead of prosperity. Even so, the account closes with assurance that God fulfilled all he had promised. The chapter also records Caleb's claim to the mountain region where Hebron stood though the Anakim lived there, and at eighty-five he said his strength for war remained as it had been at forty, with his request standing alongside the testimony that he wholly followed the Lord. The ordered tribal community receiving the allotment represented God's kingdom in miniature.
