Caleb Asks Joshua for the Hill Countryby emmanuel_higgins

Joshua 14:6

Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.

At Gilgal Caleb came before Joshua with the leaders of Judah to claim the inheritance promised to him through Moses at Kadesh-barnea. His claim rested on having faithfully followed the Lord and trusted His promise when the other spies discouraged Israel. That confidence endured through Israel's forty years of wandering, which he shared with the rest of the people, though he and Joshua entered the promised land. At eighty-five years old, after forty-five years, he remained strong.

The portion he claimed and received was Hebron, including the stronghold of the Anakim, the giants, which he chose to conquer with God's help. He sought not an already conquered land but this difficult one, to encourage Israel to take possession of the land and honor God. In God's strength he drove out the Canaanites and possessed its vineyards and olive groves there, in contrast to those who doubted and perished in the wilderness.
