Joshua 15:1

This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the uttermost part of the south coast.

After the account of Achan's sin and its fearful consequences, the book turns to the conquering of the Canaanites and the division of the land among Israel. Within that turn, Joshua 13 to 22 records the distribution of the land of Canaan among the tribes. There the verse gives an accurate description of the property of Judah from written documents.

“Lot” means a portion assigned in dividing the land, here the territory allotted to Judah by its families, with the verse identifying the southern boundary of that inheritance. The Hebrew word translated “lot” is goh-rahl, which denotes a land inheritance assigned by lot. Its use here shows that meaning in the dividing of the land among Israel’s tribes.
