Joshua 15:10 stands in the section on the conquering of the Canaanites and the division of the land, which comes after Achan's sin and its fearful consequences. It belongs to the division and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes in Joshua 11-21. It is part of the account of the distribution of the land in chapters 13 to 22, recording the history of the chosen people from their first occupation of Canaan as a nation, whose detailed description of borders and property rests upon written documents in which the property was accurately described.

The verse serves as a reference for identifying one of the eleven mountain cities assigned to the tribe of Judah. This portion also exposes Israel's lack of faith and slowness, yet it closes with the assurance that God did all He had promised and none of His good word failed.
