Joshua 15:13

And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron.

The verse stands in the first of the twelve historical books, which records the history of the chosen people from their first occupation of Canaan as a nation to the return from the captivity. That book is named for its leading character, by whom part of it was written. Within it the verse falls in chapters 13 to 22, which contain the distribution of the land and are based on written documents in which the property was accurately described.

It belongs to the account of dividing the land among Israel and setting the people on the way to conquer their foes and find the promised rest. It identifies Hebron, formerly called the city of Arba, as one of the mountain cities allotted to Judah. It records that Caleb received a part and inheritance among the children of Judah there, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua.

Caleb's taking of the land occupied by giants demonstrated the faith he had expressed forty-five years earlier, that Israel could possess it and that he was ready to face the giants with his immediate followers. His success in possessing Hebron is linked to his wholehearted service to the Lord. The victories around this conquest depended on trust in God: God's host brought down the walls of Jericho, failure to trust led to defeat at Ai, and faithfulness would have brought possession of the land sooner.
