Joshua 15:23

And Kedesh, and Hazor, and Ithnan,

The names belong to the list of mountain cities allotted to the tribe of Judah. They stand in the part of the book dealing with the conquering of the Canaanites and the division of the land, coming after the sin of Achan and its consequences.

They belong to chapters 13 to 22, which give the account of the distribution of the land and are based on written documents in which the property was accurately described. They belong to the division and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes in chapters 11 to 21, which shows Israel's lack of faith and slowness, yet closes with the assurance that God wrought all He had promised and none of His good word failed. The book is named for Joshua, who wrote part of it, with the first twelve chapters showing an eyewitness who took part in the events. The book is the first of the twelve historical books, which record the history of the chosen people from their first occupation of the land of Canaan as a nation to the return from the captivity.
