Joshua 15:3 stands in Joshua 13-22, the long account of the distribution, division, and settling of Canaan, the Promised Land, among the tribes. That portion of the book records the allotment of the land of Canaan tribe by tribe and preserves accurate written descriptions of property boundaries. The conquering of the Canaanites and the division of the land come after the sin of Achan and its consequences. The same section exposes Israel's lack of faith and slowness in taking possession, yet it closes with the witness that God had done all He promised without failure.
