Joshua 15:33

And in the valley, Eshtaol, and Zoreah, and Ashnah,

The book containing this list was largely written by Israel's leader Joshua, whose name means saviour, just as Jesus does in Greek. In its story order it follows Achan's sin and its fearful consequences, belonging to the conquering of the Canaanites and the division of the land. More precisely it stands in the account in chapters 11 through 21 of dividing and settling the Promised Land among the tribes, which includes the list of cities allotted to Judah. In that allotment Eshtaol is counted as one of the eleven mountain cities.

The division shows Joshua leading Israel across the Jordan and setting the people on the way to conquer their foes and enter the promised rest. Victory in that conquest came with the Captain of Jehovah's hosts, while lack of faith and slowness to trust brought defeat and delayed possession of the land. The account closes with the assurance that God did all He had promised and none of His good words failed.
