Joshua 15:42

Libnah, and Ether, and Ashan,

The book is the first of the twelve historical books recording the history of the chosen people from their first occupation of Canaan as a nation to the return from the captivity. It is named for its leading character Joshua, and part of it was written by him. The verse belongs to Joshua 13-22, the account of the distribution of the land among the tribes, based on written documents in which the property was accurately described.

It stands in the part that records the conquering of the Canaanites and the division of the land, coming after Achan's sin and its fearful consequences. It is one of the verses listing cities allotted to the tribe of Judah, with Libnah identified as one of the eleven mountain cities in that allotment. It belongs to the division and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes where Israel's lack of faith and slowness in possessing the land is shown, yet the account closes with the assurance that God did all He had promised and none of His good word failed.
