Joshua 15:48

And in the mountains, Shamir, and Jattir, and Socoh,

Shamir, Jattir, and Socoh are three of eleven cities in the mountains that fell by lot to the tribe of Judah. The verse stands in the chapters 13 to 22 account of the conquering of the Canaanites and the distribution, division, and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes. That account of conquest and division follows the sin of Achan and its consequences.

The book containing the verse is the first of the twelve historical books recording the history of the chosen people from their first occupation of the land of Canaan as a nation to the return from the captivity, and it is named for its leading character Joshua, who wrote part of it. The land-distribution record containing the verse is a geographical record that accurately describes the property allotted to the tribes and is based on written documents. The account to which the verse belongs shows Israel's lack of faith and slowness in possessing the land, yet it closes with the truth that God fulfilled every good thing He had promised and none failed.
