Joshua 15:55

Maon, Carmel, and Ziph, and Juttah,

Maon, Carmel, and Ziph, and Juttah are named as towns in the inheritance allotted to Judah when the land was divided among Israel. They are among the eleven mountain cities that fell by lot to the tribe of Judah. The verse belongs to the history of Israel's conquest of the Canaanites and settlement of the Promised Land under Joshua's leadership with God's help, told in Joshua 11 to 21 and especially chapters 13 to 22.

That account of conquest and division follows Achan's sin and its fearful consequences. The distribution of the land rests on written documents in which the property was accurately described. The surrounding account shows Israel's failure to trust God and slowness and lack of faith in taking possession, which brought defeat and delayed the rest and prosperity they could have enjoyed, yet it ends with the assurance that God did all He had promised and none of His good word failed.
