Joshua 16:5

And the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families was thus: even the border of their inheritance on the east side was Ataroth-addar, unto Beth-horon the upper;

The verse records the eastern side of the border of the inheritance of the children of Ephraim according to their families, running from Ataroth-addar to Upper Beth-horon. It belongs to the account of dividing and settling the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel. Within that history it comes after the sin of Achan and its consequences and includes the conquering of the Canaanites.

It stands within the land-distribution records of Joshua 13-22, which rest on written documents accurately describing the tribal properties. The chapters describing this division also show Israel's lack of faith and slowness. The division account closes in Joshua 21 with the affirmation that God fulfilled all that He had promised.
