Joshua 16:7

And it went down from Janohah to Ataroth, and to Naarath, and came to Jericho, and went out at Jordan.

The book was written largely by Joshua himself, recording his own work when about eighty years of age, after he had led Israel through the Jordan, divided the land among them, and set them in a fair way to conquer all their foes and to find the promised rest with the Captain of Jehovah's hosts with him. This boundary running down to Jericho and out at Jordan belongs to that division of the land. It is part of the account of the conquering of the Canaanites and the division of the land among Israel. Within that account it comes after the sin of Achan and its consequences.

It marks the boundary of Ephraim's inheritance, tracing it down from Janohah to Ataroth and to Naarath, then to Jericho and out at Jordan. Jericho in this boundary was the first-fruit of the evil land, whose walls the invisible army of God leveled. The full possession set forth in the boundary was delayed because Israel failed to trust, as at Ai, and fell into general backsliding after Jericho.
