Joshua 16:8
The border went out from Tappuah westward unto the river Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families. The border went out from Tappuah westward unto the river Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families.
The line traces the western boundary from Tappuah to the river Kanah and out to the sea, defining the inheritance of the tribe of Ephraim by its families. It stands in the record that follows Achan's sin and its consequences, recounting the conquering of the Canaanites and the dividing and settling and distributing of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel. That distribution was made by Joshua when he was about eighty years old, after he had led Israel through the Jordan and set them in a fair way to conquer all their foes and to find the promised rest, with the Captain of Jehovah's hosts beside him. It rested on written records that accurately described each property allotted.
In that conquest victory came through God's invisible army, as at Jericho, while defeat came through failure to trust, as at Ai. The division also exposes Israel's lack of faith and slowness and backsliding. By unfaithfulness they lived in adversity through years in which they might have lived in prosperity, and though they might otherwise have soon possessed the inheritance, they delayed its full enjoyment. Yet God wrought all that He had promised.
