Joshua 17:12

Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

Joshua 17:12 belongs to the account of Israel's conquest of the Canaanites and the division and settlement of the promised land among the tribes. It records that the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities, so the land was not fully conquered and the Canaanites continued to dwell in that land. They remained because Israel failed to trust and obey God, showing lack of faith and slowness and failure to carry out God's instructions by allowing them to stay.

The Canaanites had no right to the land, for they had been dispossessed, their iniquity was full, and God had said He would drive them out. Israel later made the Canaanites pay tribute but still did not drive them out completely. Thus Joshua's conquest did not fulfill the promise that Abraham's seed would possess the gate of their enemies.

Israel's choice to tolerate what should have been removed foreshadowed its later failure and captivity. This failure brought consequent captivity until the Lord raised up judges, or saviours, to help Israel. The verse illustrates how besetting sins can be allowed to remain through compromise, even though they have no place in a life redeemed by Christ.
