Joshua 18:11

And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families: and the coast of their lot came forth between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.

Joshua 18 belongs to the division of the promised land of Canaan among Israel and its tribes, recording the conquering of the Canaanites and the distribution of the land. That account of conquest and division follows Achan's sin and its fearful consequences. The distribution of Canaan among the tribes was based on written documents that accurately described the land and its boundaries. The division places the verse within Joshua's work of leading Israel through the Jordan and allotting them the land.

Benjamin's tribal territory was assigned by lot, and its boundary or coast came forth between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph. Benjamin's territory adjoined Judah's territory. Jerusalem lay within Benjamin's territory.

The word translated lot is the Hebrew goh-rahl, the same word used in Daniel 12:13 and translated lot seventy-six times in the Old Testament. Here lot does not mean a region or inherited territory itself, and is not the lot of inheritance, which is a different Hebrew word; it refers to an allocation made by lot. Lot means that by which the fate or portion of one is determined by the determination of Providence, what in human speech is called chance, hazard, or fortune; it is a portion and decision fixed by lot, and the coast or boundary of Benjamin came forth between Judah and Joseph by that casting. This use of lot for dividing the land proves that Daniel standing in his lot at the end of the 1335 days means standing in his lot in the decisions of the judgment of the righteous dead, which commenced in 1844.
