Joshua 18:7
But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.
The whole congregation of Israel gathered at Shiloh and set up the tabernacle there, after Gilgal had served as headquarters and as the seat of the tabernacle. The tribes that were still without possessions followed the tabernacle from Gilgal and camped near Shiloh until they dispersed to their inheritances. Shiloh was a little town in the lot of Ephraim near the center of the land and easy of access to all the tribes. The country surrounding it had been thoroughly subdued, so worshipers coming there would not be molested.
The ark remained at Shiloh for three hundred years, until it fell into the hands of the Philistines because of the sins of Eli's house and Shiloh was ruined. The ark never returned to the tabernacle at Shiloh, the sanctuary service was finally transferred to the temple at Jerusalem, and Shiloh fell into insignificance leaving only ruins. Long afterward, the fate of Shiloh was used as a warning to Jerusalem of what God would do to His house for wickedness.
