Joshua 19:27

And turneth toward the sunrising to Beth-dagon, and reacheth to Zebulun, and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north side of Beth-emek, and Neiel, and goeth out to Cabul on the left hand,

The division of the land in this chapter was by lot. Lot means determination by providence and not chance, hazard, or fortune. It is that by which fate, portion, or an event is committed to divine determination through casting lots and drawing lots. It means the part, division, or fate that falls to one, that is to allot, assign, distribute, sort, catalogue, and portion.

The verse belongs to the account of the division of Canaan among Israel's tribes and gives part of the boundary description for the territory allotted to Asher as its inheritance. The boundary turns eastward toward Beth-dagon, reaches Zebulun and the valley of Jiphthah-el, runs to the north of Beth-emek and Neiel, and goes out to Cabul on the left. In doing so it names Beth-dagon, Zebulun, the valley of Jiphthah-el, Beth-emek, Neiel, and Cabul as landmarks along its eastern and northern course. Asher was one of the tribal territories included in Galilee. The wider passage identifies Accho, later called Saint Jean d'Acre, as a city in the territory assigned to Asher.
