Joshua 19:29
And then the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib: And then the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib:
Joshua 19 records the dividing and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes as Israel's inheritance in the land. Verses 24-31 assign territory to the tribe of Asher, and verse 29 forms part of the boundary description for Asher's allotted territory. Accho, later called Saint Jean d'Acre, was in the territory assigned to Asher. Asher's district was among the regions later known as Galilee, but the tribe did not take full possession of its territory and settled among the Canaanite population, making some of them tributary.
The verse identifies Tyre as the strong, fortified city at the time Canaan was divided and in Joshua's time. It calls Tyre the strong city, showing it was regarded as a mighty, fortified place more than three thousand years ago. Tyre's name means a rock, likely from the rocky foundation on which the city was built.
The word translated coast is the Hebrew gheh-vel, not goh-rahl, meaning the part or portion assigned to someone by divine determination. It is translated region, country, or lot of inheritance, and here it refers to territorial boundaries. This inheritance-land use of lot is distinct from the word for lot used in Daniel 12:13, proving that Daniel does not stand in the lot of his inheritance but in his lot in the decisions of the judgment of the righteous dead.
