Joshua 19:34

And then the coast turneth westward to Aznoth-tabor, and goeth out from thence to Hukkok, and reacheth to Zebulun on the south side, and reacheth to Asher on the west side, and to Judah upon Jordan toward the sunrising.

The verse stands within the written geographical record of the distribution of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. It belongs to the account of dividing and settling the Promised Land after the crossing of the Jordan under Joshua's leadership, when the land was allotted among the tribes. In that record the boundaries of the tribal allotments are accurately specified.

In this allotment, lot means a portion assigned in the division of the land, apportioned by divine providence. The verse locates Naphtali's territory among the tribal districts that formed Galilee. It thus helps identify the region of the northern tribes, including Naphtali with Asher and Zebulun. The wider record of dividing and settling the land also exposes the tribes' lack of faith and slowness in taking possession. Yet the account closes with the assurance that God fulfilled all that He had promised.
