Joshua 19:35

And the fenced cities are Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth,

The verse stands in the record of Joshua apportioning the land to Israel tribe by tribe as their tribal territories. That record of distribution rested on written surveys that described the holdings accurately. Here the enumeration turns to Naphtali, naming its fortified towns in the district afterward called Galilee. Among them Chinnereth was a town beside the lake afterward known as the Sea of Chinnereth, an early name of the Sea of Galilee. In this distribution a lot denotes the share allotted in the division of the land, decided by divine providence and not by mere chance.
