Joshua 19:39

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities and their villages.

After leading Israel through the Jordan, Joshua divided the land, giving the tribe of Naphtali its cities and their villages according to its families and setting Israel in a fair way to conquer all foes and find the promised rest. A lot is a portion or inheritance assigned to a tribe and its families, and the division of the land by lot was determined by providence, not mere chance. The account of that distribution rests on written documents that accurately described the property.

This greatest work Joshua did when about eighty years of age, as one of the two of his generation who wholly followed the Lord during the forty years of temptation in the wilderness. The Captain of Jehovah's hosts was with him in all his work of victory.

Naphtali's territory was part of Galilee, where the tribes did not fully possess their assigned lands but settled among the Canaanites, sometimes making them tributary. When Israel trusted, God's invisible army gave victory, as when Jericho, the first-fruit of that evil land, fell, but when Israel failed to trust they were defeated, as at Ai. Had they been faithful they might soon have possessed the land, but from Jericho there was general backsliding, captivity came again and again, and Israel lived in adversity the years she might have lived in prosperity.
